THE Chin refugee community living in Melton will be

given the ultimate freedom
thanks to an innovative
Moorabool resident.
Gordons Stephen Mack has
been collecting and restoring
adult and childrens bicycles
for years and handed over
two dozen to the refugee
community from Myanmar
(formerly Burma) on Friday
12 December.
Mr Mack said the bikes offered the Chin community
a social outlet where they
could ride outside and interact with people from all
walks of life, while also offering them transport options and health benefits.
Ive been collecting bikes
locally and at transfer stations. It doesnt take much to
rejuvenate them: a new tube,
cable and lubrication and its
as good as gold, Mr Mack
said.
Im semi-retired, have had
bikes all my life and I like
tinkering. Ive also been getting grateful assistance from
Ballarat Cycle City.
He said he heard about a
man in Coburg whod provided bikes for refugees, so
he approached Melton Shire
with the idea, and was referred to Djerriwarrh Health
Services.
Weve been storing the bicycles until we can organise
safety equipment including

helmets. Im working with

Djerriwarrh to organise
training sessions and safety
riding lessons, he said.
If anybody wants to donate old bikes or helmets,
Id appreciate it. Theres 29
families in the Chin community, so we need kids bikes
as well as adults bikes.
Djerriwarrh Health Services CEO Bruce Marshall said
Djerriwarrhs health promotion team had worked with
the growing Melton-based
Chin refugee community for
the last 12 months.
The Chin people are an
ethnic group from Myanmar
who have experienced ongoing human rights violations
including genocide, child
labour, child soldiers, rape,
slavery, human trafficking
and a loss of freedom of
speech. Since the 1980s over
1.5 million refugees have
fled Myanmar, Mr Marshall
said.
Issues refugees face when
resettling into a host country
include the language barrier,
untreated health or mental
health issues, finances, racism, family conflict, loss of
tradition, intergenerational
conflict, isolation and loneliness. The Strengthening
Multicultural Communities
project, run by Djerriwarrh
Health Services, aims to
promote mental health and
wellbeing by creating a
socially inclusive and con-

nected community.
Mr Marshall said: The
input from members of the
Chin community at every
step of the projects development has endeavoured
to increase their leadership,
organisational skills, project
ownership and a sense of
community pride.
People who wish to donate

bicycles or helmets, or volunteer with the restoration

of bikes, can contact Stephen
Mack on 0419 574 418 or
mack.stephen1@gmail.com.

how to help the Chin community refugees, contact the

Moorabool
Shire
has
warned people to stop their
dogs from wandering or risk
a fine following three separate dog attacks on sheep in
the past few weeks.
The
attacks
occurred
around the Mt DoranEgerton and Elaine-Egerton
Roads, in Mount Doran.
More than 30 sheep were
attacked, sustaining horrific injuries consistent with
a dog attack. Some of the
injuries were so severe that
farmers had to euthanise

injured sheep to prevent further suffering.

In response to the attacks,
Moorabool Shire community safety officers have increased patrols in the area,
and have door-knocked and
letter-box-dropped the area.
Moorabool Shire CEO Rob
Croxford said dog owners
had an obligation to make
sure their animals did not
get the opportunity to attack
any livestock.
The Domestic Animals
Acts states if a dog is found

at large outside the premises of the owner, or not

securely confined to the
owners premises, the owner
is guilty of an offence, Mr
Croxford said.
Between sunrise and sunset
the offence carries a fine of
six penalty units, and between sunset and sunrise
this increases to 10 penalty
units. One penalty unit is
currently set at $147.61.
There is also an obligation
for members of the public to
alert Council to wandering

dogs, Mr Croxford said.

It is timely to remind ourselves that owners of livestock are within their rights
to destroy dogs found at
large near livestock. These
animals represent the livelihood for our farmers and
these awful attacks can
cause valuable losses.
Residents who see stray
dogs wandering should contact the council on 5366 7100,
or after hours on the animal
control emergency number
0400 501 696.

St Brigids PS Principal Peter Johnson is calling it a day after 20 years. Photo Helen Tatchell

Principal for over 7000 days!

By Jessica Howard

St Brigids Primary School Principal

of 20 years will spend his final day
with students this week before he
settles down for retirement.
With 40 years of teaching experience under his belt, Peter Johnson
said he would always treasure the
experiences made at St Brigids and
various other schools.
Mr Johnsons teaching career began in Warrnambool in 1975, before
he took on his first principal role in
Coldham, New South Wales, and in
1995 he made the move to Ballan,
where he took over leadership at St
Brigids Primary School.
Mr Johnson said he felt privileged to
spend the past 20 years here, and to

have watched and led the growth of

a school with such culture.
In my time here, the school has
grown from an enrolment of 70 to
what will be 140 students as of next
year... Over the 20 years I have been
here I have overseen a lot of changes,
including a number of physical ones
such as new classrooms, and the upstaging of existing ones. However, I
have also seen a gradual change in
the Ballan community as it continues to grow into a really lovely town
with a little village atmosphere, he
said.
As a school we are able draw on the
strengths of the Ballan Township,
but also give back to it in so many
ways. I only expect it to continue
to grow, and my time at St Brigids

has been a wonderful opportunity

to really build on the culture of the
school.
Mr Johnson said the greatest part of
being a principal would have to be
making education enjoyable.
Its about entertaining the children, and one of the beauties of being a principal in a place like St Brigids is that you can really nurture the
excitement that the children receive
each day, he said.
However, the most important
thing is that they remain children
longer, as they are less influenced by
the pressures of the big cities and I
think that is something we have continued to embrace here. The children
have a lovely appreciation for all the

little things.
In the last school newsletter for 2014
Mr Johnson said in his message to
families, it is a great privilege to
have led St Brigids school and I wish
to make special mention to the staff
over that time who have worked
with me in ensuring our school is
such a well-respected and credentialed place of education in Ballan.
With his retirement fast approaching, Mr Johnson said he is unsure
about the future, however looks
forward to travelling with his wife,
Dianne.
St Brigids School will welcome
their newly appointed principal,
Miss Gabrielle Driscoll in the 2015
school year.

BALLAN childcare fees

may be going up in 2015, but
the service is still the most
affordable in the region, says
Ballan District Health Care
CEO Wayne Weaire.
From January 2015, the Ballan Childcare Centres fees
will increase from $77 for
a full day to $85 for those
parents who pay on time;
however, parents paying in
arrears will be charged $91
for a full day of care.
Its still the cheapest in the
whole Moorabool Shire, Mr
Weaire said.
Weve endeavoured to
create a fee structure that is
affordable, yet ensures the
sustainability of the centre
as a high quality service for
our families.
Weve put on extra staff
and more highly skilled
staff. Weve also added
more equipment to the playground, changed our catering to provide better quality meals, and added new
equipment inside.
The 60-place childcare
centre is at capacity, with
places being snapped up by
parents.
Mr Weaire said the only
aspect of fees that wasnt the
cheapest, was for those parents paying in arrears.
This is to encourage people
to pay via direct debit. There
are big incentives to pay on
time, he said.
The increase in fees is in
response to the extra costs
of childcare. Theres been
no significant increase for
many years. Last year the
board implemented a slight
increase and again this year.
We know were the
cheapest because weve
rung around and made
enquiries.
The new fees will take effect
from January 5, 2015.

Sending a shockwave

Avenue of Honour has
helped Western Water to
fix a problem that has been
more than 50 years in the
making.
Using new technology,
Western Water identified a
blockage, which turned out
to be a corroded section of
galvanised pipe, dating back
to before 1960.
Western Waters General
Manager, Customer and
Community Relations, Graham Holt said the high-tech
solution to finding problems
in pipes, called the Pipe Rover, is currently being trialled

The project was helped by
the fact the section of corroded pipe was in an area

Mr Holt said it measures the

identify blockages or leaks.
We were able to find the
problem after one night of
using the Pipe Rover, and
have the 20m section of pipe

Mr Holt said.
Without this technology,
our best option would have
been to replace the entire

Kyle Burton said the award

Court in action
By Jessica Howard
A resident from Jonathon
Drive, Darley came close to
breaching a 12-month suspended jail sentence within
minutes of being served last
Friday 19 December, after
he was found in possession of a weapon following
the conclusion of his court
proceedings.
The accused was initially
charged for two separate
matters in the Bacchus
Marsh Magistrates Court,
including one count of theft
and one count of refusing to
undergo a drug impairment
assessment. The man was
sentenced to two months in
prison, suspended for one
year, and received a $500
fine.
However, as he attempted
to leave the court follow-

ing the proceedings, a duty

officer allegedly observed
a pocketknife in the right
pocket of the defendants
pants. A search was undertaken and he was arrested
and interviewed, before reappearing in court moments
later. The mans defence
lawyer stated that his client
had forgotten the knife was
in his pocket after gardening
earlier that morning. Magistrate Cynthia Toose said it
was a difficult situation, as
it was hard to tell whether
the indictable offence was
committed prior, during or
after the initial proceedings,
however a breach of court
security was a very serious
matter. The man received a
$1000 fine with conviction.

Meanwhile, a 38-year-old

man received a $400 fine

with conviction, after attempting to steal a bottle of
tequila from Stoneys Club,
situated in Grant Street Bacchus Marsh. The accused
was allegedly seen by staff
taking the bottle from a
closed bar and placing it
under his jacket, before leaving the premises. The police
were called, however the
man returned the bottle moments later and made full
omissions, stating that he
was a hopeless drunk.

Boys reign as schools best

KENDALL Evans and Jiah
German were this years top
VCE achievers for Bacchus
Marsh
Grammar
and
Bacchus Marsh Secondary
College.
Kendall Evans achieved a
VCE score of 98.2, just edging
out fellow Grammar student
Ashlee Sargent on 97.8 for
the schools dux award. Both
scored over 40 on three of
their subjects, including a
perfect score of 50/50 for
Kendall in Mathematical
Methods.
I felt relieved. I needed
93 to get into my course
at Monash University (a
double degree in chemical
engineering and a Bachelor
of Science), he said.
I was pretty confident
going in, I did a lot of work
and felt good. I was a little
bit surprised to get over 98
though. I was hoping to get

Kendall Evans
a score around the mid-90s.

Kendall said he had

always been interested in
chemistry and wanted to
follow in his fathers and
grandfathers footsteps and

Jiah German
produce fibreglass and resin
products.
Dad is a technical manager
for a fibreglass company and
Pop makes ute lids out of
fibreglass, he said.

Dear Editor,
During the election, Daniel Andrews announced he
would create another public
holiday in Victoria.
This would be held on the
Friday before the AFL Grand
Final.
With the bright lights and
the election razzamatazz
fading, this commitment
needs serious scrutiny.
Australians love a long
weekend. Or lets face it, any
day off that we can get.
But we must start thinking about what these mean.
Quite simply, `one more day
may be the last for many
small businesses.
This isnt a throw-away line.
Its reality.
The powerhouse of the
Australian economy isnt big
business. Its small business
and right now many of
these are doing everything
they can - not only to grow
but to simply stay afloat.
I can hear many of you saying `Yeah, yeah thats what
they always say. But again,
its reality.
And the reality of another
public holiday means that
any small business corner
stores, hotels, cafes, mechanic workshops, spray painters, builders, electricians,
restaurants, or any other you
can think of will be paying
staff penalty rates for this
proposed Friday holiday.
For some stores, Friday
is their busiest day of the

week.
And yet, forcing
double pay will make some
question whether its even
worth opening.
Think of the impact of this
decision, for Ballan, Bacchus
Marsh and all of Moorabool.
This decision could close
these towns down for the
day.
It means those people who
might normally be employed
on that day, wont be, or will
work reduced hours.
It means, those employees
may find it very tough to
meet their mortgage demands for that week, or their
bills for weeks to come.
For the business owner,
perhaps leasing or renting
their premises, it means that
is one day where their overhead costs remain the same,
but their ability to cover
those costs is removed.
And dont just imagine this
as rich people having a sook
because they cant get richer.
Penalty rates will also hit
the public purse.
It will have a cost burden
of hundreds of thousands of
dollars on each of our hospitals, ambulance services,
CFA and any other public
service required for that day.
Were talking millions of
dollars of additional cost for
the taxpayer. That money
will need to be found and
most likely from services
that will be reduced.
So I ask the question is it
worth it?

Is it worth stopping the state

so that Melbourne people
can cheer on the AFL Grand
Final parade?
Yes, a handful will travel
from country Victoria to
attend, but not millions of
people.
Yes a public holiday
sounds fun. But the reality
is serious. The financial implications are huge.
I urge you to discuss this
with your employer and
workmates.
I urge you
to talk to Commerce Ballarat, and its equivalents
in regional towns, who are
equally worried about this.
If Daniel Andrews really
cares about jobs, then he will
reconsider his popularist
thought bubble.
It needs to be popped.

Kendalls advice for next

years VCE students was
to make sure you put in
the hard work and believe
in yourself. You have to be
confident in your abilities

and if you have enough faith

youll probably exceed your
expectations.
He said it helped that
Bacchus Marsh Grammar
had
really
good,
experienced teachers.
Bacchus Marsh Secondary
College dux, Jiah German,
achieved a VCE score
of 85 and exceeded his
expectations.
I put in a lot of hard work
during the year, but I was
really lucky to go through
the Aspire program which
took a lot of the pressure off
me, Jiah said.
Ironically, as dux of the
school, I only needed to get
a score of 50 to get into the
course I wanted (biomedical
sciences
at
La
Trobe
University). I wasnt one to
set out to get the top score or
want to beat everyone, I was
purely doing it for myself.

He said the Aspire program

allowed him to get into his
course through means other
than his VCE score, such as
volunteer work.
Biomedical sciences is
a course that leads into
medicine. Medicine was
always my end result, but
the high 90s score needed
is a big ask. Part of the
reason Ill enjoy studying
biomedicine first is it gives
me time to decide where I
want to specialise, he said.
Through
the
Aspire
program I also got a spot on
campus at Bundoora.
Jiah said getting a good
VCE result was all about
the mindset you hold for
yourself.
I was able to push my own
boundaries, but I didnt drop
everything at home. I still
did sports and was able to
give myself a breather.

Learning from the past, today and tomorrow

A Christmas Tale with
heartfelt thanks to Charles
Dickens. This tale has been
told before in this opinion
piece names, and the ending have changed.
Christmas Eve, five years
to the day after his decision
to stop all action on climate
change, Tony and his downtrodden clerks Joe and Greg
are at work in Tonys office
high above what was once
Sydney. A child arrives with
seasonal greetings and an
invitation to Christmas dinner, but Tony dismisses him
with Bah! Humbug! declaring that Christmas is a
fraud in these times.
Two young girls collecting charitable donations
for the landless Fijians and
all the Pacific Islanders are
likewise rebuffed by Tony,

who insists that his government has spent enough on

others. Tony returns home
rowing his boat to his cheerless rooms in an otherwise
deserted building at the
bottom most part of Sydney
central. Because a fair deal of
Sydney is under water these
days most people travel by
boat which, in Tonys case,
is somewhat ironic considering that one of his earlier
boasts was of stopping all
boats.
Tony takes his melancholy
dinner in his usual melancholy room and having read
all the remaining newspapers, and beguiled the rest of
the evening with his remembrances of G20s and shirt
fronts, goes to bed.
Soon enough though, a series of supernatural experi-

ences begin for Tony. All the

bells in the house ring loudly,
there is a clanking of chains
in the bed and on the floor,
and the ghost of George Pell
passes through the closed
door into the room.
The ghost warns Tony that
if he does not change his
ways, he will suffer Georges
fate, but Tonys fate would be
even worse. He will walk the
scorched earth, with all its
trees gone, and all its flowers
gone, and all its smiles gone,
eternally after death, seeing
the misery and suffering
he could have alleviated in
his life but now powerless
to intervene. George has arranged Tonys only chance
of redemption: three spirits
will visit him on successive
hours that night.

The First of the Three Spirits

The Ghost of Christmas Past
appears at the stroke of one.
It leads Tony on a journey
to some of his past Christmases, where events shaped
his life and character. He is
reminded how his love of
coal lost him the love of the
world, and the happiness
this cost him. Furious, Tony
turns on the spirit, snuffs it
like a candle with its cap, and
finds himself crumpling up
in his bed sheets and wakes
up and feels remorseful.
The Second of the Three
Spirits
Tony wakes at the stroke of
one, confused to find it is still
night. After a time he rises
and finds the second spirit,
the Ghost of Christmas Present in an adjoining room,
on a throne made of wood-

chips. This spirit, and Tony

travel far and wide, and occasionally see some surviving groups of people around
the globe mainly in the north
and south poles and also see
how even the most wretched
of people mark Christmas
in some way, whatever their
circumstances. The Ghost of
Christmas Present vanishes
and the third spirit appears
to Tony.
The Last of the Three Spirits
The Ghost of Christmas Yet
to Come takes the form of a
grim spectre, robed in red,
who glows in the dark and
wears plastic and whose
body is entirely hidden except for one pointing hand
holding a remote control.
This spirit frightens Tony
more than the others, and
harrows him with a vision of

a future Christmas when a

politician, whose death saddens nobody is revealed to
be Tony himself: this is the
fate that awaits him. Tony
learns that he can avoid the
future he has been shown
and alter the fate of all the
animals, trees and humans,
but only if he changes.
Weeping, he swears to do so,
and awakes to find that all
three spirits have visited in
just one night, and that it is
Christmas morning.
The End of It
It would be good to say that
Tony changes his life and
reverts to a generous, kindhearted soul. However, that
appears highly unlikely.
Wishing all readers of this
opinion piece all the best
this season can offer.

With interest rates still at record lows, banks competing

aggressively on home loans
and house price growth
showing signs of moderating, 2015 offers excellent
opportunities for first home
buyers to take that vital step
onto the property ladder.
Despite owning your own
home being the great Australian dream, it is not surprising that when first home
buyers reading warnings
that they are being priced
out of the market, they
worry that dream is now out
of reach even if they have
saved a reasonable deposit.
But it need not be.
The beginning of a new
year is a time for resolutions,
but buying a home requires
more than good intentions: it
requires a plan.
Spending such a large sum
of money undoubtedly the
most you have ever spent
may seem daunting, especially for young and inexperienced buyers who dont
know where to start.
Begin by deciding where
you want to live. Then,
make a list of your priorities all the things you want
from your home and location, noting those which are
musts and which you would
be willing to compromise
on if you had to. Find the
kinds of homes you want
on the Internet listings, then
go and see them, study their

features and find out what

they sell for. Get to know the
local agents and talk about
what is available and what
you can afford.
Check the prices of all the
houses you view. Note the
differences between them,
which means the prices
will often vary sometimes
considerably.
If your preferred area seems
beyond reach can family help
you raise a larger deposit?
Would budgeting mean you
can pay a little more? How
about considering property
one suburb further out
near your preferred area, but
cheaper or a nearby, more
affordable town?
Find out what the place
you are living in is worth
could you afford it? If not,
it is important to realise
that it makes more sense to
buy your first property and
begin accumulating equity,
even if it is just a small onebedroom flat, than to continue renting and paying someone elses mortgage. If you
really cant face living there,
find a tenant and have someone else pay your mortgage
while you continue to rent.
The latest REIV median
price data shows that it is
possible to buy a two-bedroom house in Sebastopol
for $205,000, and Ballarat
Central for $255,000, in Golden Square for $250,000 and
in Morwell for just $125,000.
Generally, apartments are
even cheaper, so there are
bargains out there.
But be sure to do your research before buying you
may have put those bad
buys from the Boxing Day
sales on eBay, but buying the
wrong house is not so easily
sorted.

Why More RAM is better

When it comes to improving the performance of your

computer, increasing the amount of RAM is possibly the
most effective way of boosting speed and handling power.

What does RAM do?

AUTOMOTIVE

AUTOMOTIVE

Your computer uses Random Access Memory (RAM) to

hold program code and process instructions that you
give your software when computing. When you turn your
computer off, RAM loses the data that was used during
the computing session. When you restart your computer
the data from the operating system and the programs
you start is once again loaded into the computers RAM.
(Although modern RAM still retains small portions of data
as either dynamic DRAM or static SDRAM.)

For all your mechanical

repairs & servicing.
All makes & models including light
commercial vehicles and trucks.

$110

How much memory is enough?

The more RAM the better performance. It pays to have

as much RAM as your computer can cope with. All
computers ship with a specified amount of RAM, and most
mother boards have extra capacity to install additional
RAM. Even new computers can take extra RAM

Darley Cricket

Results - Round 6

In the First XI match at Darley

Park, Mt Clear resumed on 8/102
already passing Darleys total
of 76, and managed another 38
runs before losing two quick
wickets to finish on 154. Sajith
Rupasingha 3/37, Matthew Cape
2/16, and Brian Wheelahan 2/28
the highlights with the ball.
Darleys second innings again
lacked partnerships with the 34
run 6th wicket partnership between Matthew Cape and Sajith
Rupasingha being the biggest.
Matthew Cape finished with 30
as Darley were bowled out for
113 in the last overs of the second
day.
In the Second XI match, Mt
Clear resumed their 2nd innings
at 2/30, and were bowled out
early for 71 setting Darley 104
in their 2nd innings to win. Ben
Longhurst starred with the ball,
collecting 5/18 off 17, and supported by Liam Jordan with
2/13. At 1/4 in reply Darley were
in trouble early, but at 2/39 the
balance had shifted back Darleys way. Quick wickets followed as Darley were bowled
out for 75.
In the Third XI at Civic Hub
Oval, Mt Clear resumed at 1/77
chasing Darleys first day total of
135 and finished the second day
at tea on 6/247. Darley youngsters Jye Stephenson 2/22 and
Daniel Hynes 2/40 lead the way
with the ball.
The Fourth XI resumed on 1/70
with Lachie Wheeler on 62* still
30 runs behind after the 1st innings of both sides. Andrew
Bird stuck with Wheeler as
they put on 94 runs for the 2nd
wicket partnership. After Bird
departed, Wheeler was joined

with a number of partners before being joined by 12 yo Jordan

Monaghan who stuck around to
see Lachie Wheeler get his first
century. Wheeler finished with
115, and an 8th wicket reprieve by
Darren Hynes (20) and Jim Shea
who combined for 41 brought
the total up to 202. Mt Clear required 105 to win after tea on the
second day, and got there in 12
overs without loss.
JUNIORS
Under 16 Gold had a great win
in their one day match after batting first and finishing on 86 off
21, they restricted Napoleons/
Sebastopol to 68 off 20. Duncan
Cadman led the way with the
bat with 12. Whilst the honours with the ball was shared
around, Aaron Cadman 2/3, Corey Beaton 2/12, Mitchell Ward
2/14, and Duncan Cadman 2/15
all bowled extremely well to secure the win.
Under 16 Blue had a narrow
loss after restricting North Ballarat to 6/100 off 23, Darley batted extremely well and finished
just eight runs short of the total
also six down for 92 off 23 overs.
Brandan Foley 2/9 and Bryce Galea 2/22 did the damage with the
ball, and were supported well by
James Hunt with two catches.
James Hunt started things off
well but was bowled for 13, and
it wasnt until Taylor Bridgland
was joined by James Higgins for
the 6th wicket that things turned
around. They put on 47 runs
together to try and rescue the
match as James Higgins starred
with 26*.
The Under 14s had a great win
in their one day match at Civic
Hub Oval, bowling Wendouree

Avenue Bowling Club

Results - Round 12
Avenues Premier Division team this week played
against fellow cellar dweller
Webbcona. A win was a
must for both teams and a
tight hard fought contest
was expected.
Webbcona got away to
the best start; however by
the tea break Avenue had
worked their way to a two
shot lead. From there it was
shot for shot, with Avenue
slowly extending their lead.
In the shadows of the post,
Webbcona had taken the
lead, but with two ends to go
Avenue had tied the scores.
Again, as has happened
so many times this season,
Avenue were unable to find
the finish line. When Glenn
Sargents final bowl for the
game missed the result they
were after by mere milli-

metres, Avenue had lost another encounter by just one

shot, their third loss by that
margin this season.
Best rink for the day was
Martin Sheas rink of Pat
Considine, Andy MacDonald and Ken Warrick who
defeated their opposition 2519. Sam Shannahan also had
a win 19-17, whilst Andrew
Myers rink went down by 4
and Glenn Sargent by 5.
Final score - Avenue 84 lost
Webbcona 85
Division 3
Avenue played Ballan and
jumped to an early lead, with
the rinks of Charlie Grant
and Frank Pomeroy establishing a combined 27 shot
lead over their opponents after 11 ends. Both rinks were
able to maintain their momentum after the tea break
to run out winners by 26 and
17 shots respectively.
Bill Hawkens rink after an
even start exerted their influence on the game after the
break, winning 10 of the last
13 ends to emerge victors by
15 shots. Unfortunately Paul

OFarrells rink had a hard

day at the office to go down
by 21 shots.
Nonetheless the 37 shot win
(and 16 points) cemented the
teams place on top of the
ladder, going into the Christmas break.
Final score - Avenue 111 def
Ballan 74
Division 5
Avenue took on Midlands
Golf in what was considered a danger game for Avenue after two unacceptable
losses in the past two weeks,
and a further loss could have
resulted in the team dropping from second to as low
as sixth on the ladder.
Thankfully for Avenue the
game was being played on
synthetic and not Midlands
grass!
For Avenue strong starts
from Stewart Wilsons and
Dave McKendricks sides
gave Avenue the early advantage, which they were
both able to maintain for
the whole 25 ends to run out
comfortable winners (21 and
20 shots respectively). Peter

Santa may have come early for the Div

to bowl. Hayden Micallef and Campbell Sparrow opened the bowling and
got the team off to a great start. Chris
Micallef had hands of gold and took
five classic catches which helped Ballan bowl Lucas out for 157 runs. Justin

shot lead, and still led by two
with three ends to go, however they lost five shots in
those three ends to go down
by three. Alans teams had
the bowls in the head during
this time, but the opposition
skip managed to draw the
shot each time.

Division 8
Avenue played Bungaree
at Ballarat in very different
conditions than their previous encounter this season,
when Avenue won by 138
shots. This time on grass was
more of a level playing field,
with the opposition providing a better contest.
Led strongly by Oscar
Mauffs rink they recorded
a convincing 19 shot victory.
Super-veteran Stan Cummings rink which had an
eight shot victory and Ron
Millingtons rink which won

Riely Ranieri was the stand out batsman making 32 no before compulsory

some excellent bowling and fielding,
standout bowlers were Jack McGregor

Brodie Guppy with two wickets for

Ladder
As stated Division 3 goes
into the break on top, Division 5 are second and Division 8 are also on top of their
respective ladders. The challenge now for the selectors
and players is to maintain
the momentum gained in
the first 12 rounds and finish off the season in similar
fashion.
MIDWEEK PENNANT
Division 1 travelled to Mt
Xavier on what, at times,
can be a tricky green. As it
turned out, Avenue with
newly appointed skip Molly
Whiting won by 16, Glenys Kay won by 12 and Di
Hardiment won by 16, were
able to record wins in all 3
rinks being 44 shots up for
the day. This week in the
last round before the break,
fourth placed Avenue face
third placed Creswick in a
battle for third spot in what
should be an enthralling
encounter.

Division 2 - After the first
nine games of the season,
Avenue had only won one
game, and were in a battle
to avoid relegation with two
other clubs. However over
the past two weeks, Avenue
showed why they were promoted from Div 3 this season
recording two solid wins to
ease the threat of relegation.
Last
Monday
Avenue
played Ballarat North, one
of the other two sides facing
possible relegation in a must
win game. In a strong performance by new skip Jan
Sullivan and her rink, (33
shots up) and Marlene Kneebones rink (10 shots up) Avenue were able to seal a 30
shot win, despite the third
rink losing by 13 shots. The
win gives the Club a 20 point
buffer over last placed Ballarat North, and they are due
to play fifth placed Creswick
in this weeks last round
before the break. A win on
Monday is most achievable,
given the teams good form
over the past two weeks.
