CELEBRATING 80 YEARS

BUILDING A NATION
PAGE 4

MESSAGE
2014 is our 80th anniversary - a significant achievement in our industry.

The Thiess story begins in 1934, in the middle

of the Great Depression, when five brothers
Les, Pat, Bert, Cecil and Stan Thiess banded
together to pioneer our industry. Its a story of
courage, determination and entrepreneurship
that embodies the great Australian spirit. While
over 80 years many things have changed, our
tenacity to embrace innovation and keep moving
forward has stood the test of time.
From humble beginnings on Queenslands
Darling Downs, Thiess has grown into a multibillion dollar company, with an international
footprint across Australia, Indonesia, India
and New Caledonia.
Since those early days, weve seen remarkable
change economically, socially and politically.
From horse power to mechanical power, from
analogue to digital to fibre optics, from
earthmovers to the largest tunnel boring
machines ever used in Australia, Thiess has been
at the forefront of progress. From helping the

Australian and American Armies during WWII,

to connecting the nation through the Beef Roads
Network, to pioneering Australias coal export
industry, to distributing Toyota Land Cruisers
and playing a major role in the delivery of iconic
infrastructure that has helped shape our nation.
In our industries, we have a history of firsts
including:
1944 pioneering open-cut coal mining at the
Blair Athol Coal Mine in Central Queensland and
Muswellbrook Coal Mine in New South Wales
1958 becoming the first Australian company
to be awarded a major contract on the Snowy
Mountains Hydro-electric scheme
1962 exporting the first shipment of
Queenslands high-quality coking coal to Japan
1972 partnering with Petrosea to build the
Sembawang dry dock in Singapore one of the
largest dry docks in the world and the beginning
of our foray into Asia

1988 delivering Australias first immersed road

tube tunnel under Sydney Harbour
1993 securing some of the first privatised water
services contracts ever awarded in Australia
1996 remediating the Maralinga Nuclear Test
Site in South Australia - Australias most toxic site
2003 leading the trend in Public Private
Partnerships projects beginning with
Lane Cove Tunnel
2012 delivering Australias largest road
infrastructure project Airport Link in Brisbane
2012 completing the Southern Hemispheres
largest reverse osmosis desalination plant, the
Victorian Desalination Project
2013 mobilising the largest plant fleet in
Australia at Lake Vermont Coal Mine, including
12 new Liebherr T282 Ultra Class haul trucks and
two 800-tonne Liebherr 9800 excavators.

Along the way, we have navigated the highs

and lows of an ever-changing, competitive global
marketplace. In 1958, Thiess floated on the stock
exchange to make our work on the nationbuilding Snowy Mountains Hydro-electric
Scheme possible. This decision provided
the platform for growth and as the company
became more and more successful, it left Thiess
vulnerable to a corporate takeover. What was
unthinkable for the Thiess brothers happened in
dramatic fashion and in 1979, CSR set its sights
on Thiess mining interests, succeeding in a
hostile takeover. Following negotiations,
Sir Les bought back, with the help of Hochtief
and Westfield, the construction arm ensuring
the Thiess name continued. By 1983, Hochtief
had acquired Westfield shares and negotiated
with Leighton Holdings to sell Thiess in exchange
for increasing their shareholding of Leighton
Holdings to 40 per cent.

Hochtief has once again increased its share

in Leighton Holdings to nearly 70 per cent,
signalling change in our company once again.
As Hochtief continues to review the business,
I am confident that we will emerge bigger and
better as we have over the past 80 years.
While the sound of change heralds in the
background, our priority is to deliver our clients
even greater value. In Construction, three Thiess
projects were finalists in this years prestigious
Australian Construction Achievement Awards.

we are partnering with clients to maximise
opportunities for continual improvement.
Leveraging state-of-the-art technologies and
equipment, our people are managing some
of the industrys leanest operations with
outstanding safety and production rates.

In Services, our teams are also using leading

edge technology to give our clients the high
standards that communities demand.
As you are aware, Leighton Holdings is
restructuring the companys operating model
and Thiess will be moving forward with a focus
on building a global mining enterprise. While this
transition takes place, our number one priority
remains to serve our clients and deliver
excellence across all our projects.

people who carry on their legacy.

DONT TELL US WHAT WE CANT DO,

TELL US WHAT WE CAN DO.

Set against the backdrop of the Great

Depression, five young brothers had a dream to
help build a nation. Joining forces, the brothers
- Les, Pat, Bert, Cecil and Stan registered
Thiess Bros. in Toowoomba in 1934. They turned
their unwavering passion for construction,
plant, innovation and taking on battles into
building an empire. These brothers-in-arms
had an uncanny ability for finding people
who may not have shared their name but did
share their can-do spirit which today we call
blue blood. Together, they broke ground and
persisted through incredible wins, personal loss,
enduring partnerships and much more. Their
tenacity created the foundation of a company

Working on the Snowy Mountains Hydro-electric Scheme (1959)

that has been part of Australias story, shaping

construction, mining and services history.
Their epic Aussie tale of entrepreneurship was
powered by vision, guts and determination that
have been immortalised in the words dont
tell us what we cant dotell us what we can do.
Eighty years later, Thiess is one of the countrys
leading construction, mining and services
contractors with operations in Indonesia, India
and New Caledonia. From the heart of Australia
at Uluru to almost every major port in the
country, weve been there. In many ways the
Thiess story is a small reflection of Australias
own coming of age.

80 YEARS STRONG

CONSTRUCTION

Pioneering
Construction
SINCE 1934, THIESS HAS BEEN THE FORCE BEHIND SOME OF

AUSTRALIAS MOST ICONIC INFRASTRUCTURE PROJCTS.

From so-called beef roads that were built
through outback Australia to move cattle around
the country and ports for export, to roads linking
new and developing towns that were springing
up to service a growing population, Thiess forged
an enviable reputation as a remote-area builder.
In 1958, Thiess became the first Australian
contractor to win work on the nations biggest
engineering masterpiece the Snowy Mountains
Hydro-electric Scheme. Three consecutive
contracts were completed over 25 years,
concluding with the construction of the Talbingo
Dam and Tumut 3 Power Station. By this time,
Thiess had successfully carried out one-quarter
of all contractual work on the scheme and it
set the business on its path for future success.
Thiess has since established a reputation
for delivering high-quality, large-scale and
technically-complex projects. Its capabilities span
highways and railways; airports, dams and ports;
hospitals and commercial buildings; through to
mine and energy infrastructure. In alliance and
joint ventures, Thiess has delivered some of
Australias award-winning and largest transport
infrastructure projects including Brisbanes
Airport Link, West Gate Freeway Upgrade and
EastLink in Victoria, and Sydneys Harbour and
Lane Cove Tunnels. The company has also been
responsible for some of the countrys most vital
regional and metropolitan rail projects.

The company has built 84 dams in 80 years and

this experience in the water sector extends to the
provision of desalination and treatment plants,
pipelines and pump stations. In joint venture,
Thiess delivered the internationally-recognised
$3.5 billion Victorian Desalination Project,
the largest desalination plant in the Southern
Hemisphere.
Thiess has also emerged as a leader in the
delivery of specialist, technically-advanced
structural, mechanical, electrical and piping
projects across the energy and resources sectors.
Since 1986, the company has supported many
of Australias LNG projects including the recent
Chevron-operated Gorgon and Wheatstone
projects in Western Australia, and BG Groups
Queensland Curtis LNG project.
As one of the nations largest building
contractors, Thiess continues to offer flexible
and intelligent solutions to deliver fit-forpurpose health, Defence, correctional services
and commercial facilities. These are most
recently evidenced by the multi-award winning
redevelopment of the Royal North Shore Hospital
in Sydney, and the redevelopment and expansion
of the Lotus Glen Correctional Facility and
Lavarack Barracks in North Queensland.

The next few years will be exciting for all of us in the

in the public sector that will inevitably occur to make
them possible.
Both of these themes are important as they point to
an exciting opportunity for Thiess and others.

From the Snowy Mountains Hydro-electric Scheme and

Sydneys Harbour Tunnel to some of the largest and most
complex energy, mining, transport and utility projects,
Thiess has delivered a legacy of projects that have, in
part, defined our national identity.
Indeed, Thiess was recently recognised alongside the
Commonwealth and Victorian Governments and other
companies for its role in the delivery of the highlycomplex Regional Rail Link Project in Victoria.
This proud legacy sees Thiess well positioned and
well-credentialed in engineering construction, with
a proven record to compete for a forward public
infrastructure programme that will be of an
unprecedented volume and scale.
As Thiess looks to the next 80 years, its likely that we
will see substantial changes to the roles of the public
and private sectors in infrastructure, particularly as the
public sector looks to bring down the costs of
infrastructure services.
From motorways through to complex health and social
infrastructure projects, public sector clients are looking
at how new thinking and new approaches can deliver
materially better outcomes.
Thiess commitment and track record in driving new
approaches, coupled with proven excellence in delivery,
leave the company well positioned to sustain and
enhance the proud record it has amassed over the
past eight decades.

BY THE EARLY 1940s, THE THIESS BROTHERS

HAD MINING IN THEIR SIGHTS.

The Muswellbrook Workshop, NSW (1940s)

With a national shortage of coal-fired energy,

they were at the forefront of a boom. The 1944
Blair Athol Coal Mine contract catapulted the
business into the sector, with the Muswellbrook
and Balmoral Coal Mine contracts soon to follow
the same year. These early mine projects were
formative in developing Australias coal industry.
Les Thiess ambitions led him to seek a market
overseas in Japan and what followed was one
of the companys most enduring partnerships
between Thiess, Mitsui and American company
Peabody. Having started prospecting in the late
1950s, Thiess Peabody Mitsui Coal Pty Ltd
started operations at Kianga-Moura coal mines
in 1962, exporting Queenslands first coking coal
to Japan. This relationship with Peabody
continues today where Thiess operates the
Burton Coal Mine on behalf of the company.

INDUSTRY

INSIGHT

Australias minerals industry is a highly-competitive,

cyclical and globalised sector. To thrive, as Thiess has
done over 80 years, requires strength, agility and a
pioneering spirit.
In our industry, no two projects are ever the same.
Developing high-risk, high-cost, long-lived ventures
requires a commitment to continuous improvement
and a culture that embraces innovation.
Continuing growth and development of emerging
economies, particularly in Asia, will continue to underpin
long-term demand for Australias minerals, but supply
competition will be strong.

Today, Thiess is one of a select few contractors

worldwide with a mining capability that spans
planning and design, operations and technical
services, plant and asset management, product
handling and processing, and mine infrastructure

The rapid progress developing the rich natural

endowment of mining regions in Africa and South
America is one of the challenges the Australian industry
confronts - together with declining ore grades, escalating
capital costs, ongoing capacity constraints and additional
global scrutiny.
The highest standards of safety, a forensic approach
to productivity and cost management, and an approach
to the environment and community that exceeds
compliance are each critical to success in the modern
mining operation.

With a replacement value of $3 billion, Thiess

operates and maintains one of the largest and
most diversified mining fleets in Australasia. This

Thiess is well placed to develop the innovative systems

and processes to address these issues and participate
in the delivery of Australias next generation of minerals
projects.
The Minerals Council of Australia (MCA) advocates public
policy and operational practice for a globally-competitive
minerals industry that is safe, profitable, innovative and
environmentally and socially responsible. Thiess has been
a partner in this pursuit for 20 years. It is a valued
member of the MCA and the industry and we wish the
company, its shareholders, management and workforce

The Services
Advantage
THE SERVICES BUSINESS COMPLETES THE MODERN

THIESS STORY, HAVING GROWN INTO A LEADING PROVIDER

OF INTEGRATED WATER, ENERGY, ENVIRONMENT, TELECOMMUNICATIONS

AND INFRASTRUCTURE MANAGEMENT IN JUST 27 YEARS.

The Services business began in 1987 when
the team repurposed an earthmoving fleet
to manage landfill contracts in Queensland.
Thiess won all of Brisbane City Councils landfill
management contracts while delivering step
changes in safety, productivity and innovation.
This success led to new areas including, water,
remediation, energy, telecommunications and
infrastructure where the team quickly gained a
reputation for optimising the life of clients

In water, Services forged long-term partnerships

with Melbourne Water and South East Water as
governments began to outsource more services.
Within a few short years, Thiess had fitted its
South East Water fleet with the latest GPS
technology and real-time data reporting
a revolution at the time for the industry. In 1995,
Services acquired the Hydrographic Services
Group from the Rural Water Corporation of
Victoria, which proved instrumental to building
Thiess environmental monitoring capability.
Today, Thiess is delivering key contracts in
environmental monitoring and water maintenance
services, including a major program for
Sydney Water.
With its first remediation contract in the 1990s,
Thiess rapidly became Australias leading

MD CHAMPIONS DIVERSITY

Achieving real change in gender diversity requires

committed and inspirational leaders working
together to achieve better outcomes.

Thats what Thiess Managing Director

Bruce Munro told CEDAs recent Women in
Leadership Forum, following the release of the
first Queensland Male Champions of Change
(QMCC) report, Get in the Game.
The message was reiterated by all of the
champions on the panel, who also addressed
the 900-strong crowd in Brisbane.
The QMCC members were selected for their
willingness to improve diversity and inclusion
in their particular workplaces and represent a
range of Queensland-based companies including
Ausenco, Aurizon, A P Eagers, Cardno, Super
Retail Group, Wesfarmers Resources, Bank of
Queensland and the University of Queensland.

addressing gender imbalance, particularly in
the male-dominated mining and construction
industries.
To begin with, we have to immerse ourselves
in the agenda or as the title of the report
suggests, Get in the Game, Bruce said.
We need to move past developing ideas and
focus on taking action, and thats a leadership
challenge that we all need to take up.
Partnering with other leaders to look at gender
imbalances and committing to doing something
about it makes good business sense.

As business leaders, its beholden on us to lead

change and I look forward to a day when gender
equity is part of our culture.
As detailed in the report, Thiess has also
participated in pay equity reviews and has
facilitated focus groups and roundtable
discussions with women from across the
businesses and we will ensure this continues.
I am convinced that diversity will improve our
business, but that can only be achieved through
an inclusive culture where different perspectives
are heard and valued, Bruce said.
I have two daughters and I would like to think
that they have as much opportunity as my sons
have in any industry, doing any role they choose.

Sixty steel beams removed from the monorail last

year many from Pitt Street in the CBD have
been refurbished and used to build a temporary
road bridge at the site of the new Norwest railway
station. Norwest is one of eight new stations on
Australias biggest public transport project.
Project Director for the Thiess John Holland
Dragados (TJHD) Joint Venture which is delivering
the tunnel and station civil contract for NWRL,
Terry Sleiman, said his team was looking around
for the steel needed to build the bridge when they
heard the demolition of the Sydney Monorail was
underway.

We immediately said well take that and began

working on a design that could use the monorails
beams to form the main structural part of the
temporary bridge, he said.
There were substantial benefits in purchasing the
monorail sections from the demolition company
that went beyond the substantial savings on the
costs of raw steel.
The monorails box girder design and beam
lengths eliminated the need for precast concrete
panels in the formwork and enabled us to pursue
a much simpler construction methodology using
bridge girders.

We met the challenge to minimise disruption to

This would mean Brookhollow Ave was only

RELATIONSHIP CONTRACTING

KEY TO ADVANCING
INDUSTRY OUTCOMES

THE WORLD OF CONTRACTING BRINGS A UNIQUE SET OF CHALLENGES

AS PARTIES OFTEN FACE COMPETING INTERESTS IN THE PURSUIT OF
DELIVERING LARGE-SCALE AND COMPLEX INFRASTRUCTURE.

Thiess Managing Director Bruce Munro says if our

industry is to prosper in the future, we need to
find better and smarter ways that allow us to
reduce the extraordinary waste in tender costs,
equitably share the risk, unlock innovation and
collaboration, and drive overall project
performance. He believes the key to reaching
these outcomes is for clients and contractors to
take relationship-style contracts to a new level.
If our industry is serious about cutting costs and
!+)%*#)+.!!%!*0/%),(!/0.0%*#,+%*0
is to eliminate the enormous waste caused by an
archaic and flawed tendering process that tries
to equate low price with value.
Australian contractors are spending an excessive
amount of money on bid costs. I would suggest
up to half a per cent of the project value. The
industry (including resources and infrastructure)
procures approximately $120 billion worth of
work each year and as each project invites three
companies to tender, contractors will spend up
to $1.8 billion in tendering costs. This equates in
real terms to $900 million wasted on losing. If we
include the cost of engaging subcontractors, we
could add an additional 40 per cent, bringing
the real cost of lost tenders to approximately
$1.2 billion annually.

Australian contractors are

spending an excessive amount
of money on bid costs.

Its little wonder international contractors claim

Australia as the most expensive market in which
to tender globally.
With limited opportunities and lots of
competition, its certainly a buyers market.
Clients only have to sit back and watch as
2222

competitive forces drive prices down, pressuring

margins and putting profitability at risk.
A relationship style of contract that is
underpinned by transparency of cost, risk sharing
and a team approach incentivised to deliver
great outcomes will achieve the best price and
remove the potential battlefield of disputes that
in most cases arise when conventional contracts
are used.
Modern-day alliancing has its origins in the UK
where it was first used in the mid-90s to enable
step change improvements in the delivery of
complex offshore oil and gas projects. Sydney
Water Corporation embraced the idea of
alliancing to deliver a complex wastewater
project that had to be ready in time for the
5 *!5(5),%/
Thiess, like many other contractors, has seen
firsthand the benefits that alliances bring. Its
evident on projects like the recently-completed
M80 Ring Road Upgrade and West Gate Freeway
Upgrade in Victoria, and the award-winning
Hunter Expressway Stage 2 Project in New
South Wales.
These large complex projects delivered
exceptional results, many exceeding KPIs and
stretch targets. But the real value gained is the
enduring relationships and even more
importantly, the opportunity to bring innovation
to the fore in a culture that values good ideas
and team work.
Alliances continue to evolve in the UK with new
models emerging. These include ProCure21, a
national framework agreement implemented by
government whereby six key contractors have
been selected, via one tender process, to deliver
10 years of capital investment projects.
Delivering excellence is the driver as it forms the
basis of future work. This process eliminates
wasteful tendering costs and incentivises
performance in project delivery.
A similar framework has been implemented
closer to home. The Melbourne Water Program

Service Providers Framework is being used in

Victoria and two joint ventures, one of which is
the Thiess/Black and Veatch JV, tender for the
projects as part of the Water Plan 3 Capital
Program. The value of this program over the
five year Water Plan 3 period (July 2013
to June 2018) is $1.04 billion or approximately
$200 million per annum and individual packages
of work will be awarded on an ongoing,
competitive basis.
There are also other models to consider that
have been used on mega projects overseas.

Programme Partner and the Project Delivery

structure imposed by Department of Transport.
Interestingly, on the surface this appears similar
to an EPCM but the big difference is the
introduction of an innovation incentive available
to all contractors on site.
There is a subtle shift that needs to happen here
one that requires a change in mindset, a
willingness to engage early and as one team.

and executives who are prepared to challenge
the status quo and take a leap of faith that
theres a better way to move our industry forward.
Staying tuned to our clients, our markets and the
global economy is vital to ensuring success. If we
consider where we find ourselves today, there is
clearly a need that goes beyond our futile
attempts to drive down costs one that requires
early engagement, transparency and allows
innovation to be unleashed. Thats why taking
relationship contracting to a new level could
hold the key to our future.

The screens traditionally used were not rated
for impact and the team recognised a new
design was needed to guard workers against
large and heavy missiles, like runaway truck

DRIVING GREATER VALUE

ON WESTCONNEX

IN LATE 2012, THE NEW SOUTH WALES GOVERNMENT TOOK AN ALTERNATIVE APPROACH
TO HELP SHAPE ITS WESTCONNEX PROJECT, HIGHLIGHTING THE BENEFITS OF SEEKING
CONTRACTOR EXPERTISE AT THE BEGINNING OF THE PROJECTS LIFE CYCLE.
The Government initiated an Industry Partner
Development Scheme, commissioning
organisations from the construction industry
to lead a review of the various sections of the
project, ensuring the best value-for-money
solution was part of the project planning process.
Its this early consultation with industry that
can help deliver the best possible transport
solution, greater value for taxpayers and set a
benchmark for the way major projects are
shaped in the future.
Linking Sydneys west and south-west with
the CBD, Sydney Airport and Port Botany, the
WestConnex project is currently Australias
most significant transport undertaking. The
Government selected Thiess to lead a consortium
to develop plans for the Airport Access Link
and Inner West Tunnel.
Thiess General Manager Tunnelling, Steve Wille,
said the contractor-led review provided valuable
input into the WestConnex reference scheme.
The Government had previously commissioned
a number of consultant-led feasibility studies but
further development work towards a reference
design benefited from construction input,
Steve said.

functionality and our task was to find the

solution which best met all of their objectives.
While our core business will always be
construction, our involvement during the early
stages of major projects like this, ensures
constructability is built in from the very
beginning. It also means our clients can make
value for money decisions due to our thorough
knowledge of the project costs and construction
methodology.
Steve said all clients would benefit from seeking
contractor expertise in the very early stages of
major projects.
By looking at the project from a construction
point of view, we can offer the client an extra
level of value engineering which they are not
going to get elsewhere, he said.
The client benefits because they have all of this
information early and can ensure the best ideas
are fed into a concept design and the
development of the Environmental Impact
Statement.
We believe there is much more scope for this
type of work to be done with all of our clients
and hopefully reduce the timeframe for large
projects coming to the market.

The client was very explicit - they needed to

create significant savings without compromising

Not only do we get to collect the data

much faster, we also get accurate information
on stockpiles which we didnt have time to
get before.

Thiess Chief UAV Controller Bill Norwood

regularly flies the 26.5 kilometre Pacific
Highway upgrade project between Frederickton
and Eungai in New South Wales. Hes fully CASA

The first component is a sophisticated model

aircraft or unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) with long
battery life and advanced remote control system.

Thiess Survey Manager for the project, Ben

Dixon, says the aerial survey is a fantastic
innovation.
The result is a visual and data-rich virtual project
which shows the volume of material moved since
the last flight and the volumes remaining to meet
the design profile.

Now through the vision and innovation of Thiess

spatial engineering team, two worlds have
combined to achieve remarkable survey
outcomes.

certified and applies the diligence of a pilot to

every flight.

The essential second component is

extraordinarily powerful software that automates
the flight plan, manages the output of the
aircrafts onboard camera and turns the visual
and GPS data into volumetric information.

Until now, the need to continually assess bulk

material volumes has required regular field
surveys. Constantly sending surveyors into
the project is labour intensive and potentially
dangerous with people operating in close
proximity to heavy machinery.

In a letter to Thiess MD Bruce Munro, Martin
stressed the enormous significance of the
contract to his people.
This contract allows our tribe to share this land
with dignity and optimism for the future,
Martin wrote.

We no longer need to observe others from

all over the country coming to our region and
making great careers and lives for themselves.
We too can now be part of that economic fabric.
Not only can we now experience genuine
economic advancement, we can also apply our
earnings to protect and enrich our cultural and
social obligations that we have to our community.

has on Aboriginal families is severely underestimated.
As an Aboriginal barrister, I can tell you that
Aboriginal homes that have at least one stable
income earner experience less domestic violence,
greater school attendance and more positive
health outcomes than homes with no primary
income earner.
It goes without saying that the best way to
close the gap, in the long term, is to empower
Aboriginal people to address the gap issues
ourselves through employment and education.
The Iman people understand that there are
genuine business requirements that must be
met before contracts like this can be awarded.
We know we had to build capacity and in effect
meet you halfway.
Your willingness to contract with our company is,
to me, evidence that your company is willing to
meet all Indigenous people half-way and we are
very grateful and promise to not let you down,
Martin concluded.
Martin also acknowledges the support of QGC
through its Indigenous Participation Plan and the
valuable business assistance provided by Social
Ventures Australia.

TEAMWORK

OVERCOMES QCLNG LOGISTICS

CHALLENGE

TEAMWORK IS THE KEY TO OVERCOMING THE MASSIVE LOGISTICAL CHALLENGE OF WORKING

ON THE WIDESPREAD QUEENSLAND CURTIS LNG (QCLNG) PROJECT IN THE SURAT BASIN,
ACCORDING TO PROJECT DIRECTOR JOE DUJMOVIC.

Thiess has passed a major milestone in its

contract with QGC to deliver upstream
compression facilities, having now mobilised
on 21 sites for the four Central Processing Plants
(CPPs) and 17 Field Compression Stations
(FCS) which are spread over a distance of
200 kilometres from Dalby, on the Darling Downs,
north-west to Wandoan.
The company has handed over to QGC the
first of four CPPs which deliver processed and
compressed gas to the export pipeline for
transmission to QGCs liquefaction plant on
Curtis Island.

of upstream compression facilities in the Surat

enough, but 21 locations spread over such a large
.!#.!0(5%*.!/!/0$! !#.!!+" %1(05
Joe explains.
Were getting people to come from all over
Australia and then sending them off to 21 sites,
all the while keeping control of project supplies,
delivery, quality, systems and most importantly,
ensuring this is done safely thats where the
challenge lies.
A dedicated travel and accommodation team
ensures the right people end up on the right
job site, while a centralised warehouse has been
established in Chinchilla to track, dispatch and
monitor the movement of materials and
equipment.

There are also specialist quality and safety teams

based at each site, and a best-practice program
in place which captures new ideas and innovations
and incorporates them into a central guidebook.
The learnings will significantly benefit phase two
of the project.
Joe is quick to stress that delivery of the project
is a team effort.
We are a team consisting of Thiess, our key
subcontractors and suppliers and importantly,
QGCs people with gas expertise integrated
within the team. No-one company has the
resources to deliver the whole project, Joe says.
Thiess Regional Manager on the Ruby Jo CPP,
Darryl Schultz, says QCLNG is a great
demonstration of Thiess capability.
We are now effectively delivering everything
from bulk earthworks, detailed excavation,
concrete civil works, structural work, piping and
electrical and instrumentation works, Darryl says.
Andrew Kinsey is in charge of delivering the
Jordan CPP and is preparing to gear up for the
process piping phase.
Its a very big job. Well be ramping up to a
total crew size of close to 450 people on this
site alone. This is very specialist work and Thiess
is now a leader in the field, Andrew says
The scale of the pipework is obvious even to the
layman, but not so obvious is the intricate
electrical and instrumentation work.
Each of the four CPPs requires more than
300 instruments and more than 100,000 metres
of cable to connect and interface with QGCs
Upstream Control Room in Chinchilla.

compression and decompression, similar to that

required for divers.
Thiess General Manager Tunnelling Steve Wille
says it was tough.

In a major coup for construction in the oil and

gas industry, Thiess, Saipem
Australia and Santos GLNG
won the 2014 Queensland
Premiers Innovation in
Sustainable Technologies
2014 QUEENSLAND
Award and was a runnerPREMIERS INNOVATION

TECHNOLOGIES AWARD

The 4.3 kilometre undersea

tunnel was recognised
because it provided a conduit
for Saipem Australia to
install the Santos GLNG gas
transmission pipeline without
the marine environment
disturbance associated with alternative methods
such as dredging or trenching.

WINNER

It was fitting recognition for the project which

has received plaudits for its engineering
standards and contribution to the local
community.
The quality of the finished tunnel is a tribute to
Thiess tunnelling team which overcame major
geological challenges on their undersea journey
to Curtis Island.

and Im extremely proud of
the way our people fixed the
cutter-head and brought the
machine home, Steve said.
The tunnelling operation
employed a team of 75 people
and required a total of more
than 420,000 man-hours to
complete.

The TBM excavated

approximately 55,000 cubic
metres of earth which is
being used by the Gladstone
Regional Council to rehabilitate an ash pond
associated with a coal fired power station.
Named Rose-Ella by the children at the local
Rosella Park State School, the four-metre
diameter, 277 tonne TBM lined the tunnel as
it went, installing more than 21,750 pre-cast
concrete segments. The TBM was recovered
piece by piece via a shaft on Curtis Island in a
process that took nine days. It was then barged
to the mainland and transported to Brisbane.
The completed tunnel was stripped of all services
and thoroughly cleaned before being flooded
with seawater in early March in preparation for
Saipem Australia to install the pipeline. The water
provided buoyancy for the concrete-coated pipe
as it was pushed through the tunnel from the
mainland.

IN BETTER EQUIPMENT AVAILABILITY AND INCREASED PRODUCTIVITY.
Building on the success of last years Target
6,000 project which aims to achieve 6,000
operational hours annually from both 996B
excavators, the 92TWENTY initiative is taking
operations at the mine to another level.
The focus is to achieve annual equipment
availability of 92 per cent and produce 20 million
equivalent BCMs, a stretch target according
to Thiess General Manager Mining, Douglas
Thompson.

will be a benchmark performance by the team,
Douglas said.
Hitting the target will require a whole-of-site
collaboration and precision timing, but it can be
done.
The team made the decision to change preoperational procedures and shift change
protocols which has significantly reduced down
time and increased productivity.
Maintenance crews are working to ensure
70 per cent of total down time is for planned
maintenance work. The crews closer
collaboration with the production teams is also

bringing about changes in how the machines are

operated, resulting in reduced accident damage.
The team has also regained 90 minutes of
production every week following the introduction
of a new site-wide system which has cut blasting
shut-down times in half.
This has been achieved by the drill and blast
team agreeing on set times for blasting each
week, providing the operations team with
advanced notice so they can plan their breaks
accordingly. This in turn allows the plant team
to streamline the refuelling process, so the
equipment is available as soon as blasting is
finished.

The team is looking at every aspect of the
operation to see how we can improve.
Fleet is redirected to other work areas as
operations change and its this type of innovative
mine planning and infield correction that we are
driving across our business.
We most certainly can achieve the 92TWENTY
target and I think we will find towards the back
end of the year it will be a goal that will be
celebrated and become normal practice.

RADAR TECHNOLOGY
LEADING RADAR TECHNOLOGY AT THE BURTON COAL MINE IN CENTRAL QUEENSLAND
IS OVERCOMING THE ISSUES ASSOCIATED WITH A CHALLENGING HIGHWALL DESIGN,
220-METRE DEEP PIT AND HEAVY REGIONAL RAINFALL.
The introduction of a slope stability radar
12 months ago is helping the team adjust mine

mitigating safety risks through the precise
monitoring of ground movement.
The radar tracks the movement of the slope
in real time and can be monitored remotely.
Its widely accepted as the best practice
technology for safety, according to Project
General Manager Gus Jorquera.
The monitoring system at the Burton Mine is
world class and is fundamental to our mining
operation, Gus said.

Given the geology of the mine and the depth

of the pit, we expect there to be some instability
in the slope and the radar allows us to track what
is occurring 24/7.
Thiess Strategic Mine Planning Manager
Dr Mehmet Doktan said the multiple daily
readings also inform both short and long-term
mine planning of the pit.
Knowing well in advance if an area we are
mining is becoming unstable gives us the time
we require to safely relocate the crew and
equipment and seal off the area, he said.
We also use the data to refine our long-term
mine planning activities such as the orientation

of working faces, the calculation of batter angles

and positioning of barriers.
He said the technology had proven itself in the
past on other Thiess mining projects which had
similar slope stability issues.
The radar allows us to safely mine sections of
the project that would otherwise be considered
too high risk. Without this key tool, we would
effectively be leaving coal in the ground.
The Queensland-developed technology is used
at mine sites around the world and there are
currently two radars in use at the Peabodyowned Burton Mine.

Thiess will supply 140 staff and mining

equipment to move approximately 80 million
tonnes of overburden and ore from the remote
greenfield iron ore mine, 600 kilometres southeast of Darwin.
Western Desert Resources Managing Director
Norm Gardner said the company was delighted

Thiess General Manager

Mining Western Region Viv Roberts said the
mobilisation phase had its challenges.
Weve had to deal with the issues that come with
working in the Top End including an unforgiving
wet season that created road closures not
to mention the intense heat but that hasnt
deterred us from staying on program, he said.
The majority of employees hired for the project
are local or will fly in from Darwin, in line with
Thiess policy of hiring locals first.

Thiess and Western Desert

Resources have also
committed to providing
opportunities for Indigenous
Australians.

We have a shared strategy with Western Desert

Resources to offer Indigenous Australians
training and employment opportunities, and this
includes a partnership with Rusca Bros Mining,
Viv said.
We have a target initially of around 15 per cent
Indigenous employment and envisage most
of these people will also come from the local
communities.
The Roper Bar Project workforce currently
comprises 20 per cent Indigenous workers.

The new team approach has delivered a number of innovations
to increase productivity and better tailor its procedures to
meet mining requirements. This includes maximising haul truck
payloads, increased use of double benching and mining in three
flitches instead of four, providing an immediate 15 per cent
improvement against budget.
Arguably though, the biggest improvement is the adherence to
the mine plan.

A NEW FLOOD MONITORING DEVICE CREATED

BY THIESS ENVIRONMENTAL MONITORING
TEAM IS DELIVERING COST SAVINGS OF
UP TO $40,000 ON TRADITIONAL FIXEDMONITORING STATIONS.

The Portable Automated Logger System

(PALS) has been developed for around one-sixth
of the price and delivers a broader range
of environmental monitoring data which has
since been used by the Bureau of Meteorology.

THE PALS ADVANTAGE:

VDV Web Portal

PALS was created in response to shortfalls

identified in flood monitoring following the
2011 Victorian floods and has been used
successfully in three subsequent flooding events.
The Victorian Government has purchased 20
units which have been deployed across the State
and its anticipated other state governments and
local authorities will follow once the cost benefits
are realised.
Systems and Innovation Manager Michael
Wheaton said PALS filled the gaps in the fixed
flood monitoring network and eliminated the
need for manual water level readings.
The units provide government agencies and
emergency services operators with the most
accurate information to determine when

communities need to be evacuated and also

when people can return home, Michael said.
*!+*/%0!0$!#1#!*!/!01,*
operational within 30 minutes and can be
relocated as floodwaters move.
In 2011, authorities in Victoria underestimated
the receding flood that impacted on communities
and this eroded their confidence in emergency
services agencies to provide accurate updates.
PALS measures, transmits and displays water
level information from remote sites on the Thiess
Vista Data Vision (VDV) website to enable more
informed decision making and they have now
been successfully deployed to three subsequent
flooding events in Victoria, Michael said.

The units also have the potential to improve

environmental monitoring. The designs
versatility means components can be added and
removed to support other monitoring activities
including water quality, water level, dust and
noise monitoring. The device now also includes a
camera, with images transmitted back to the
Vista Data Vision website.
Environmental monitoring underpins the
majority of our operations whether it is mining,
construction or services, Michael said.
The units have the potential to deliver a whole
new range of data to our clients, which can only
help improve operations. Their low cost and high
value makes them indispensable in flood-prone
regions.
