INTRODUCTION
Ranchi is the capital of the Indian state of Jharkhand. Jharkhand
accounts for 40% of the mineral resources of India,Earlier most of the
part in Jharkhand was covered by forest but now due to urbanization
trees are cut and forest cover is depleting fast.Ranchi accounts for 50%
mineral production of the state[citation needed], nearing about 18% of
nation's mineral production. For this reason Ranchi is also called the
Manchester of the East.Since 2011 census ranchi now is one of the 53
million plus cities of india and stands as the 46th largest city out of top
53.[citation needed]. Ranchi was the centre of the Jharkhand
movement[1] for a separate state for the tribal regions of South Bihar,
northern Orissa, Western West Bengal and the present eastern
Chhattisgarh. Jharkhand State was formed on 15 November 2000 by
carving the Bihar divisions of Chota Nagpur and Santhal Parganas.
The name Ranchi comes from the original Oraon village Archi at the
site.[2] Archi derives from the Oraon word for bamboo grove or stave.

GEOGRAPHY PROJECT SUBMITTED BY:- SUDARSHAN SANGA

According to legend, after an altercation with a spirit, a farmer beat the

spirit with his bamboo stave or archi. The spirit shouted archi, archi,
archi and vanished; Archi became Rachi, and Rachi became Ranchi.[3]
Up to 1927, the place was known as Rachi[citation needed]. One
historically significant neighborhood is Doranda ('duran' means song
and 'daah' means water in the Mundari language), between the Hinoo
(Bhusur) & Harmoo Rivers, where the civil station, treasury and church
established by the British Raj were destroyed by rebel forces during the
Sepoy Mutiny.[4] The present Purani (old) Ranchi marks the site of the
old village of Archi.
Geography

Ranchi is located at 23.35N 85.33E.[5] The total area covered by the

Ranchi municipal area is 175.12 square kilometres and the average
elevation of the city is 629 m above sea level.

GEOGRAPHY PROJECT SUBMITTED BY:- SUDARSHAN SANGA

Ranchi is located on the southern part of the Chota Nagpur plateau

which forms the eastern edge of the Deccan plateau. Ranchi is referred
to as the "City of Waterfalls", due to the presence of numerous large
and small falls of around the close vicinity of the city. The most popular
ones are Dasham, Hundru, Jonha Falls, Hirni and Panchghat.
The Subarnarekha river and its tributaries constitute the local river
system. Dams in Kanke, Rukka and Hatia have been built over these
channels to cater to the water requirements of majority the population.
Ranchi has a hilly topography and its combination with dense tropical
forests ensures that it enjoys a comparatively moderate climate
compared to the rest of the state. Previously, it was accorded a 'hill
station' status during the British rule. Rapid population growth and
industrialization have caused considerable change in the weather
pattern and rise in average temperatures. This has resulted in gradual
loss of this "Hill Station" like status.

Climate

Ranchi has a humid subtropical climate. However, due to its position

and the forests around the city, it is known for its pleasant climate. Its
climate is the primary reason why Ranchi was once the summer capital
of the undivided State of Bihar. Temperature ranges from maximum 42
to 20 C during summer, and from 25 to 0 C during winter.December
and January are the coolest months with temperature getting to
freezing point in some places of the city. The annual rainfall is about
1430 mm (56.34 inches). From June to September the rainfall is about
1,100 mm.

Industry

The term industry refers to a field or an organization involved in the

production of goods or extraction of natural resources. The economy of
a country depends on the industries it has. The more industries a
country has the more economically rich and stable it is.
The type of an industry a country mostly depends on relies on the
presence of the available resources in the country. However only the
presence of resources is not enough for the industry to work, it is
important that the amount used for the production of good is exceeded
by the amount taken for its consumption. Hard work and labor are
another factor for the industry to work.
The presence of many and successful industries in a country make it
economically stable not only because it increases the chance of trade
but it also enhances the employment structure of the country. The
more industries in a country the more scope and chances for the
GEOGRAPHY PROJECT SUBMITTED BY:- SUDARSHAN SANGA

people to earn. One of the many reasons why some countries have left
behind others and are successful and rich is the presence of many
industries.
Types of industry

Extractive industries are concerned with supplying commodities, which

are extracted from earth. The products of these industries are generally
used by manufacturing and constructive industries for making finished
goods.

Genetic industries refer to industries under which plants and animals

are grown for the purpose of sale to the consumers.

Manufacturing industries are those, which convert the raw materials or

semi-finished goods into finished products.

GEOGRAPHY PROJECT SUBMITTED BY:- SUDARSHAN SANGA

Construction industries are concerned with the construction of

building, dams, road and etc. the raw materials that are used by these
industries are the products of manufacturing industries.
Services industries
Business provides not only goods but also services. Services industries
do not produce any tangible goods. These are engaged in providing
services to the public.

There are three types of Industries by Size in India. They are:

1) Large Scale Industries
2) Medium Scale Indusrties
3) Small Scale Industries

GEOGRAPHY PROJECT SUBMITTED BY:- SUDARSHAN SANGA

Large Scale Industries

Large scale industries refers to those industries which require huge

infrastructure, man power and a have influx of capital assets. The
term large scale industries is a generic one including various types
of industries in its purview. All the heavy industries of India like the
Iron and steel industry, textile industry, automobile manufacturing
industry fall under the large scale industrial arena. However in recent
years due to the IT boom and the huge amount of revenue generated
by it the IT industry can also be included within the jurisdiction of
the large scale industrial sector. Last but not the least the telecoms
industry also forms and indispensable component of the large scale
industrial sector of India. Indian economy is heavily dependent on
these large industries for its economic growth, generation of foreign
currency and for providing job opportunities to millions of Indians.

Medium Scale Industry

A medium enterprise is an enterprise where the investment in plant and
machinery (original cost excluding land and building and the items
specified by the Ministry of Small Scale Industries vide its notification
No. S.O. 1722(E) dated October 5, 2006) is more than Rs.5 crore but
does not exceed Rs.10 crore.
The definition of MSMEs under the services sector is as follows:
i. A micro enterprise is an enterprise where the investment in equipment
does not exceed Rs.10 lakh;
ii. A small enterprise is an enterprise where the investment in equipment
is more than Rs.10 lakh but does not exceed Rs.2 crore; and
iii. A medium enterprise is an enterprise where the investment in
equipment is more than Rs.2 crore but does not exceed Rs.5 crore.
The Indian Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs) sector plays a pivotal
role in the overall industrial economy of the country. It is estimated that

GEOGRAPHY PROJECT SUBMITTED BY:- SUDARSHAN SANGA

in terms of value, the sector accounts for about 39% of the

manufacturing output and around 33% of the total export of the country.
Further, in recent years the MSE sector has consistently registered
higher growth rate compared to the overall industrial sector. The major
advantage of the sector is its employment potential at low capital cost.
As per available statistics, this sector employs an estimated 31 million
persons spread over 12.8 million enterprises and the labour intensity in
the MSE sector is estimated to be almost 4 times higher than the large
enterprises

Small scale industry

Industry is the segment of economy concerned with production of
goods. Small scale industry is a term which applies to the small
entrepreneurs who are engaged in manufacture and production on a
micro scale. It mainly refers to agro- based rural industry which doesn't
require huge capital influx and large infrastructure. These small scale

GEOGRAPHY PROJECT SUBMITTED BY:- SUDARSHAN SANGA

industries also include the indigenous cottage industry and the

handicrafts industry. The development of small scale industries is very
important for a country like India which has mainly rural economy.
These small scale industries which are mainly agro- based in nature
would provide job for millions of Indians and would contribute largely
to the overall growth of the Indian economy .
