Menomonee Falls High School Dec. 12. Photo by
Thomas J. McKillen.

There were millions of students who have participated in the "Hour of Code" event, and some of those students were at Menomonee Falls High School.
The Hour of Code was an event held as part of
Computer Science Education Week from Dec. 8-12.
During the Hour of Code event at the Menomonee Falls
High School Dec. 12, participating students had the
opportunity to get a first look at computer science during time in the school library.
Brenda Larson coordinated the high school Hour of
Code event. Larson said this is the second year the
event was being held at the high school. At the time of
the interview (approximately 1:30 p.m. central time)
there were 72 million students worldwide who participated in Hour of Code activities, with approximately
700 students at the high school taking part up to that
point. Larson said participants included students in
geometry, honors geometry, algebra 2, honors algebra
2 classes.
"Most of them are (participating) for the first time,"
Larson said.
The event is aimed at drawing students into a field
with plenty of job opportunities. According to information from Larson, new programming jobs are growing
three times faster than the number of students entering
the field. Other information from Larson indicated that
by 2020, the computer science field is expected to
have one million more jobs than students and that the
average starting salary for students with a computer science major is $67,300.
"Nationwide, that's why there's such a large push
because we don't have enough kids to fill the jobs that
are out there in the computer industry," Larson said.

warm up and she's yours forever. She would be good in a household with children 15
years and up that will initially respect her space and give her time to feel comfortable.
Bubblicious absolutely loves to be pampered and is happy to spend hours in your lap.

(BPT) - Winter's frigid temperatures are

on their way, and if you wait until the cold
hits to finally start winterizing your home, it
may already be too late to prevent home
damage.
"You need to winterize your home while
the weather is still warmer just as you would
winterize your car," says Bill Loden, president of the American Society of Home
Inspectors. "An ASHI inspector can help prioritize these projects for homeowners as the
seasons change and weather becomes more
severe."
Getting started on your seasonal winterizing checklist during the fall will help you
prevent costly repairs in the spring. To help
you properly winterize your home and prepare for the colder months, the ASHI advises you to CHILL by following these tips:
C: Caulk cracks to stop chilly drafts.
Worn-out weather stripping around doors
and windows allows cold air to seep into the

H: Hustle on important repairs. Get
going on those tricky repairs, such as putting
insulation around your pipes. Not sure
where to start? ASHI recommends a home
inspection approximately every four years;
this can point you in the right direction.
I: Inspect your fireplace and flue. Test
your fireplace flues for tight seals. If you're
feeling a breeze even when the damper is
closed, the flue could be warped, worn or
even rusted.
L: Look for deck decay and damage.
Fixing any splintering, decay or insect damage on your deck this fall can prevent further
deterioration during the winter.
L: Light your fireplace and chill out.
Stay warm this winter and build a fire in your
family's fireplace. First check your smoke
alarms. You probably will find all of your
smoke alarms have ionization detectors.
Throw all of them in the trash, even if they
are brand new. Replace them with photoelectric alarms. Ionization alarms will let you
know when you have burned the toast, but
they may not alarm you if you have a deadly, smoldering fire in the middle of the night.
"Before another severe winter sweeps
through, homeowners must get serious about
scheduling a home inspection to determine
what unnoticed repairs may be necessary,"
says Loden. "A home inspector can help
homeowners identify and tend to any problems."
To locate a home inspector in your area,
visit www.ashi.org and use their Find a
Home Inspector directory.

Boys basketball: Warhawks top

Falls, remain undefeated
The Germantown boys basketball team
jumped out to a 9-0 lead against
Menomonee Falls Dec. 20, only to have
Menomonee Falls tie the score at 17-17
early in the second quarter on a basket by
Jake Stauffacher.
But Connor Edmonds answered with a
three point basket at the 6-minute mark of
the second quarter and Germantown never
relinquished the lead on the way to a 8048 victory
Edmonds basket started 16-4 run that
gave the Warhawks a 36-21 lead by halftime. Germantown's lead was never below
13 points in the third quarter and the
Warhawks opened the fourth quarter by
scoring the first nine points.
Bryce McMurtry of Menomonee Falls
was the leading scorer for the game with
20 points while Edmonds led Germantown
with 16 points.
"I liked the beginning. We've been
preaching about the beginning of the game
the whole year because we've not had
good starts," Germantown Coach Steve
Showalter said afterward.
Showalter said he wasn't thrilled with
the second half of the first quarter "but we
methodically did what we needed to do."
Showalter said his team needed to finish around the basket better, as his team

isn't as tall has it has been in the past.

Also, he said the team defense needs to
improve.
With the win, Germantown improved to
4-0 in the North Shore Conference and 6-0
overall. Germantown was ranked second
in the most recent Division I coaches poll.
Looking ahead, Showalter said he will seek
to expand on the team's depth
Germantown will play Neenah at the
Wisconsin Basketball Shootout at
Concordia University at 7:30 p.m Dec. 30.
"Our next game against a pretty good
team is really going to tell us a lot,"
Showalter said.
Menomonee Falls had a 0-3 Greater
Metro Conference record and a 3-7 overall mark. Menomonee Falls will be off during winter break and will return to play with
a Jan. 3 game at West Bend West.
Dec. 19 Marquette
44,
Hamilton 33: The Hilltoppers outscored
Hamilton 18-4 in the fourth quarter and led
the Greater Metro Conference afterward.
Charlie Drazewki was the leading scorer
for Hamilton with 12 points. With the loss,
Hamilton had a 1-2 conference record and
a 5-2 overall mark.
Hamilton will play Stevens Point and
Wisconsin Rapids at the Sentry Classic in
Stevens Points Dec. 28-29.

Girls basketball:
Germantown runs past Falls
A fast start was enough for the
Germantown girls basketball team Dec. 20,
and too much for Menomonee Falls.
Germantown outscored Menomonee
Falls 20-6 in the first quarter on the way to
a 73-36 win. Germantown held a 38-18
lead by halftime and outscored
Menomonee Falls 24-5 in the third quarter.
Germantown's Taylor Higginbotham
led all scorers with 21 points while
Madison Grzesiak led Menomonee Falls
with 16 points
Afterward, Germantown Coach Matt
Stuve said the focus was on using the
team's full-court press to turn defense into
offense.
Menomonee Falls Coach Craig
Amundson said the game exposed
rebounding issues and said his team may
have gotten nervous with the fast pace of
the game.
"We didn't have to rush things as much
as we did," Amundson said.

Germantown leads the North Shore

Conference with a 5-0 record while holding
a 7-0 overall mark.
The team will play at the Rathke
Memorial Tourney in Franklin Dec. 29-31.
"I think coming into this tournament
we're definitely going to get some teams
where we're going to have to work hard the
entire game to pull it out and we'll have to
see how it goes," Germantown guard
Taylor Higginbotham said.
Menomonee Falls has a 0-3 record in
the Greater Metro Conference and a 1-6
overall record. Menomonee Falls will host
its own tournament Dec. 29-30.
Menomonee Falls will play Slinger at 8
p.m. Dec. 20.
Dec. 19 Divine Savior Holy
Angels 50, Hamilton 35: The Dashers
outscored Hamilton 20-2 in the first quarter
to stay on top of the Greater Metro
Conference standings. Hamilton fell to 2-1
in the Greater Metro and 4-2 overall. Macy
Williams led Hamilton with 12 points.

Village Board approves company

request for outdoor storage
The Menomonee Falls Village Board
approved a request from Wacker Neuson
Production Americas LLC Dec. 15 to amend
the conditional use permit to allow outdoor
storage and testing of machinery and
equipment at N92 W15000 Anthony Ave.
The company requested the change to
allow for testing inside a company building
and storing between 100 and 150 skid
steers outside. The fully built skid steers
would be on the east side of a building,
450 feet from the nearest residence and not
visible from residences or from Pilgrim
Road.
A public hearing was previously held
before the Village Board on the matter.
Trustee Steve Raymonds noted that
while village staff recommended that outdoor activities at the site not exceed 75
decibels at the property line, the Plan
Commission recommended the noise be limited to 65 decibels. He added that the
hours were changed to 7:30 a.m. to 5:30
p.m. Monday through Friday and 7:30 a.m.
to noon on Saturday.
In other items before the board:
The Planned Residential Development
for the Lieds property on the east side of
Town Line Road and south of the Union
Pacific railroad tracks was amended to
allow for 11 duplexes instead of 12. As part
of the change, an old farmhouse nearby

will be converted to a duplex. The change

was approved with the condition that there
is access to the farmhouse site.
An agreement for construction services between the village and Stantec
Consulting Services Inc. for utility and roadway construction of the White Stone Station
Development was approved. The contract is
for $183,500, and is part of the villages
eighth tax incremental finance (TIF) district.
The agreement is for the staking of utilities
and roadway as part of the second phase
of the extension of Falls Parkway from just
west of Pilgrim Road to Water Street.
Trustee Jeremy Walz noted that Stantec
has provided inspection services for the village on phase 1 of the extension. He
added that all costs will be paid through
the TIF district.
Etc.:
Village President Randy Newman
announced that the premier showing for the
local PBS program Around the Corner with
John McGivern segment focusing on
Menomonee Falls will be held at the
Schwabenhof, N56 W14750 Silver Spring
Road, at 7 p.m. Jan. 20. The event will be
open to the public.
Im looking forward to it, he added.
