The Hong Kong ICT Awards aims to recognise and promote

outstanding ICT inventions and applications, thereby
encouraging innovation and excellence among Hong Kongs
ICT talents and enterprises in their constant pursuit for creative
and better solutions to meet business and social needs.
The Hong Kong ICT Awards was established in 2006 with
the collaborative efforts of the industry, academia and the
Government. Steered by the Ofce of the Government Chief
Information Ofcer, supported by Hong Kong Productivity
Council and Hong Kong Trade Development Council and
organised by 10 Hong Kong ICT industry associations and
professional bodies, the Awards aims at building a locally
espoused and internationally acclaimed brand of ICT awards.
The Hong Kong ICT Awards 2014 comprises ten categories,
including Best Business Solution Award, Best Digital
Entertainment Award, Best Digital Inclusion Award, Best Green
ICT Award, Best ICT Startup Award, Best Innovation Award,
Best Lifestyle Award, Best Mobile Apps Award, Best SME ICT
Award and Best Student Invention Award. There is one Grand
Award in each category, and an Award of the Year is selected
from the ten Grand Awards by the Grand Judging Panel.
Hong Kong is a well-recognised digital city characterised by
keen ICT adoption. With a tech-savvy population, Hong Kong
is a breeding ground for startups which play a pivotal role in
sustaining our ICT development. In fact, Hong Kong is named
by Forbes as a top tech capital to watch after Silicon Valley
and New York. Over the years, many of our local startups
have developed into successful business and gained
international recognition.

2014

In view of this, the category of Best ICT Startup Award is set

up so as to acknowledge the contributions of these outstanding
ICT startup companies that have developed innovative and
quality ICT solutions, with a vision to promote entrepreneurship
and startup culture.

Message from Vice Chairman and Convener, Startup Working Group

Message from Organizing Committee Chairperson

Mr. Ben Cheng

Ms. Ping Wong

Vice Chairman and,

Convener, Startup Working Group

Secretary - General, Internet Society Hong Kong

Sadly, as a Tech Startups Founder, I do not really agree that

the Government or an organisation is qualied to give prizes
to startups. I believe that everyone has a different reason to
start their startups. Some want to make money from hot cash
and exit, some want to establish a popular brand, some want
to create products to solve their own problems. Some want to
turn their dreams into reality. Maybe some just want to live a
life as they wish.
Whats the point in setting one set of criteria for different
companies and score them? Whats the point in showing your
ashy products and your perfect business plans when there are
no real users? Whats the point in getting 10 prizes when the
founder could not maintain the business?
Since I had the honour to participate in the Organising Committee,
I would like to contribute from a Startup Founders perspective. I
would like to take this opportunity to thank the help we got from
different parties. We have an amazing number of entrants this
year. I would also like to thank our assessors and judges who
have selected all winners and decided that there is no Gold
Award winner for the Social Innovation Stream - I hope we will
have more companies with the aim of creating social impact
will join us next year.
Finally, let me make a parody on a line* from the movie The
Grandmaster, Dont tell me how many prizes you have got,
how much money you have raised, how sophisticated your
technology is Startup ( ), two characters, one horizontal,
one vertical. If its wrong, close it down. Only the ones who are
left standing are those qualied to speak. What do you think?

A lot of people in the circle of ICT startups do not think that

there should be competitions or awards for startups because
they think that not many people are qualied to decide who is
The Best Startup. Even when startups have the best team,
the most creative products and the perfect business plans, only
the market and time can prove their success. Getting an award
this year and closing down the next year is not rare.
From the day we decided to organise the Award, it is quite
similar to running a startup -- there is limited time and
resources and more rules than we thought. However, we
strived our best because the judging criteria for startups
should not be the same as the other Awards. We assess the
companies on the whole, not just their products. We are very
honoured to have received support from various organisations
as the number of applications is surprising and exciting.
Ive talked to several entrants of the Award. Of course it
feels nice to received an award as we will get more exposure.
However, what we really want from this competition is to know
more people who can help and contribute to our company.
There is no cash rewards for the winners. The focus is the
prizes.

I believe that whatever can help startupers is worth doing. The

aim for the Award is to inspire and support startupers, as well
as to recognise their effort and perseverance. Lets give them
a big hand, to those who have received an award and those
who have not.
We hope to see you all again next year. Good luck!
