What is Discovery?

Discovery Summer Holiday Program


3rd to 24th January 2015

National Parks and Wildlife Services environmental education


program is called Discovery. Through our walks, talks and tours we
aim to foster enjoyment of our national parks and provide visitors
with an opportunity to see how we manage reserves for natural and
cultural heritage conservation and recreation.

Mondays

Greenfield Beach, Jervis Bay NP

Fitzroy Falls Visitor Centre, Morton NP

Bookings are required to ensure places in the activities. Printed


finishing times are approximate and activities may be cancelled or
altered due to unforseen circumstances.
Children must be accompanied by a supervising adult (the child rate
is for children aged 516 years: children under 5 years attend free).
Family rates are for 2 adults and up to 3 children.
When attending activities, please bring drinking water, appropriate
clothing (particularly footwear), sun protection and a snack.
Vehicle entry fees apply in some parks.

and cultural sites, our national parks are special
places where youll experience wonders unlike
anywhere else in the world.
This Summer, come exploring on a ranger
guided tour and discover the wonders of these
special places on the following days:

Mondays Greenfield Beach


Jervis Bay National Park

Monday 5 | 12 | 19 January
MEET THE RANGER
Come exploring on a 20-minute ranger-guided tour to
discover the wonders of the Scribbly Gum Track and its
array of wildlife near the shores of Jervis Bay.
Time: Every half hour from 10:30 am to 1:00 pm
Grade: Easy
Cost: By donation ($2 per participant)

Tuesdays Fitzroy Falls Visitor Centre


Morton National Park
Tuesday 6 | 13 | 20 January
MEET THE RANGER
Come exploring on a 20-minute ranger-guided tour to
experience the wonders of the magnificent Fitzroy Falls.
Time: Every half hour from 10:30 am to 1:00 pm
Grade: Easy
Cost: By donation ($2 per participant)
Tuesday 13 January
WILDERQUEST FINDING FOOD IN THE FOREST
Theres a feast hidden in the forest, if you know
what youre looking for and where to find it. Join our
Aboriginal Discovery Rangers at Fitzroy Falls on this
exciting search for bushtucker and bush medicine.
Time: 2:00 pm to 3:30 pm
Grade: Easy
Cost: Child $10. Accompanying adults free

Come exploring on a 20-minute ranger-guided tour to
discover the wonders of Minnamurra Rainforest and
the unique creatures and plants hidden in the forest.
Time: Every half hour from 10:30 am to 1:00 pm

Wednesday 14 January
CREATIVE ART WORKSHOP
Join local artist and Kiama Arts trail member Vanessa
Harrington in the beautiful Minnamurra Rainforest and
explore your artistic creativity. Materials supplied.
Time: 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm
Grade: Easy
Cost: $15 per participant

Saturdays Lady Denman, Huskisson


Saturday 3 | 10 | 17 | 24 January
MEET THE RANGER
Come exploring on a 20-minute ranger-guided tour to
discover the wonders of Wanda the Caravan and her
new home near the mangroves.
Time: Every half hour from 10:30 am to 1:00 pm
Grade: Easy
Cost: By donation ($2 per participant)
Saturday 3 | 10 | 17 | 24 January
BOOMERANGS AND BUSHTUCKER
For hands-on fun with Koori tools and weapons, visit
Wanda the Caravan at the Lady Denman, tour of the
nearby mangroves and enjoy a cup of bush tea.
Time: 11:00 am to 12:30 pm

MEET THE RANGER
Come exploring on a 20-minute ranger-guided tour to
discover the wonders of the ancient forests of Seven
Mile Beach and its natural and cultural heritage.
Time: Every half hour from 10:30 am to 1:00 pm
Grade: Easy
Cost: By donation ($2 per participant)
Thursday 8 January
WILDERQUEST ROCKPOOL TREASURES*
Come on a coastal WilderQuest adventure exploring
rockpools for their treasure. Will you be able to spot sea
creatures who hide among the rockpools and sparkle
like colourful jewels?
Time: 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm
Meet: Pergola, Burke Pde, Gerroa (off Riverleigh Ave)
Grade: Easy
Cost: $10 per child. Accompanying adults free

Thursday 15 January
BOOMERANGS AT THE BEACH
Enjoy hands-on demonstrations of Koori tools and
weapons from Aboriginal Discovery rangers while
hearing about its important cultural connections to the
saltwater people.
Time: 1:30 pm to 3:00 pm
Bring: Sun protection, water, snack
Grade: Easy
Cost: Child $5, Adult $10, Family $25
Thursday 22 January
WILDERQUEST FOREST FLYERS
Build your own kite at the place where the forest meets
the sea. Hear stories about kites, gliders and other forest
fliers. Once done, fly your creation on the sandy shore.
Time: 2:00 pm to 3:30 pm
Bring: Sun protection, water, snack
Grade: Easy
Cost: $10 per child. Accompanying adults free

Fridays Depot Beach Campground | Murramarang National Park

MEET THE RANGER
Come exploring on a 20-minute ranger-guided tour to
discover the wonders of Depot Beach with its fantastic
wildlife trails and rock pools.
Time: Every half hour from 10:30 am to 1:00 pm
Grade: Easy
Cost: By donation ($2 per participant)
Friday 9 January
ICEBERGS AT PEBBLY BEACH?*
Imagine icebergs drifting along the Pebbly Beach
coastline on this exciting adventure. Discover fossils
that are hundreds of millions of years old and formed
on the sea floor of an almost frozen prehistoric ocean.
Time: 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm
Meet: Pebbly Beach picnic area
Bring: Sun protection, water and snack
Grade: Medium

Friday 9 | 23 January
FORESTS ALIVE AT NIGHT
Join the Discovery Rangers for this unique opportunity
explore forest life at night and experience nocturnal
creatures in the wild.
Time: 8:30 pm to 10:00 pm
Bring: Small torch, water, sturdy footwear
Grade: Medium
Cost: $10 per participant
Friday 16 January
KOORI CULTURAL EXPERIENCE
Discover some of our countrys rich and ancient cultural
traditions. Activities include bushtucker, weaving, using
and making tools and weapons, boomerang throwing,
traditional music, dance & more.
Time: 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm
Bring: Sun protection, snack, water.
Grade: Easy
Cost: Children $5, Adults $10, Families $25

TRADITIONAL WEAVING WORKSHOP
An exciting new opportunity to learn an ancient art.
Enjoy this exclusive traditional weaving workshop with
a respected Aboriginal elder. Materials supplied.

Cost: $40 per person (5 people minimum)
GLOW WORM GLEN ADVENTURE
Take a guided adventure, descending into the
darkness of Glow Worm Glen through the nocturnal
world where wombats live. Watch the glow worms light
up, find out why they live here and how they glow.
Time: Two hours
Meet: William Street, Bundanoon
Cost: $40 per person (5 people minimum)
LOOK OUR WAY A KOORI WOMENS WALK
Take a fresh look at the landscape from a Koori womans
perspective, as you explore the natural pools of Dharawal
National Park near Campbelltown.
Time: Two hours
Meet: Victoria Rd, Dharawal National Park
Cost: $40 per person (5 people minimum)
WILDERQUEST BUG DETECTIVES
Explore the world of bugs and find out what they look like,
where they live & how they hide. Equipment supplied.

EVERY ROCK TELLS A STORY
Explore the Gondwana coastline and its fossils, as you
visit sites to reconscruct the ancient story of icebergs,
floods and volcanos.

NATURES STORIES AUSTRALIAN LANDSCAPES
Explore the fantastic lookouts of Morton National Park
and discover stories folded into the landscape.
Bring your camera gear for this memorable journey.
(Note: This tour travels 2WD accessible gravel roads)

NATURES STORIES ORCHIDS ON SHOW
Join an orchid enthusiast for this tag-along tour of
known orchid sites along the Jervis Bay coast.

FIREGROUND TAG-ALONG DEANS GAP FIRE
In the summer of 2013, the Deans Gap Bushfire burnt
out-of-control west of Nowra. Take this behind-thescenes look at how the bush responded to this fire.
