FOREWORD

Theseroleplayingrulescameaboutearlyin2010.Iwasawayforaweekendofgamingwithfriends,and
oneofthegamesontheagendaturnedouttobetheearly80'sversionoftheroleplayinggamethat
starteditall.Likemany,thiswasthegamethatintroducedmetopenandpaperRPGs,andeventhough
Ihadn'tplayedthisparticularversionofitindecades,Ihadfondmemories.
Daysbeforetheactualgame,IdidsomethingIhadn'tdoneinyears:Icreatedacharacterfrom
scratch,nolaptop,nospreadsheets,nocharactergenerators.Justme,mydice,mycharactersheet,and
mywellwornredrulebook.Ihadforgottenhowwealldiditaskids.Ittookmeabouttwentyminutes.
Theexperiencewasinvigorating,anditleftmefeelingtwelveyearsoldagain.
Moreover,IwasamazedbywhatIhadaccomplishedwithasimple64pagerulebook.Forthepastten
years,I'dplayednothingbutnewerversionsofthesamegame,spendinghoursandhoursreadingrule
booksandsupplements.Roleplayingisahobbyforme,sothistimewasn'twasted,buttherewas
somethingliberatingwithhavingaccomplishedsomuchwithsolittle.Needlesstosay,Iwasexcitedto
putmynewlycreatedhealertothetest.
Whenthetimefinallyarrivedtoplay,IdidsomethingelseIhadn'tdoneinyears,Iplayedwithoutmy
laptop.Onceagain,itwasjustme,mydice,mycharactersheet,andmywellwornrulebook.Nodistrac
tions,noscreenblockingmyviewofthetable.Weplayedforwellovertenhoursthatday,andIhadan
incredibleamountoffun.
Overthecourseofthenextweek,Ihadachancetoreflectonthegameandmyexperience.Oneof
thethingsthatimpressedmethemostwasthespeedofcombatandthesheeramountofexploringwe
hadaccomplished.Withnumeroustacticaloptionsandalaundrylistofspells,Ihadn'trealizedjusthow
slowcombathadbecomeovertheyears.
Overthenextfewweeks,Isearchedforasetofrulesthatwouldgivemethespeedandeaseofthe
classicgamewithoutcontainingsomeofitsmoreobviousdrawbacks.WhenIcouldn'tfindoneIliked,I
decidedtowritemyown.TheresultisSimplicity.
Mechanically,SimplicityencompassesideasfromnearlyeveryRPGIhaveeverplayed,botholdand
new.Inspiteofthis,Ifeelitretainsadefinite"oldschool"feel.Iveintentionallywrittentheruleslean
togivetheGameMastermorecontrolovertheworldheorshecreates.Becauseofthis,Simplicitymay
notbethebestchoiceforsomeonewhohasneverrefereedapenandpaperroleplayinggame.Thatbe
ingsaid,thoseofyouwhohavebeenaGameMasterbeforeshouldhavenoproblemlearningtherules.
Ontheplayersideofthings,SimplicityisoneoftheeasiestsystemsI'veeverused,andeventhosewith
zeroexperienceinroleplayinggamesshouldhavenoproblemgettingstarted.
I'veoptedtoreleasetheserulesunderversion1.0aoftheOpenGameLicenseandprovidethemto
thepublicinelectronicformatforfree.Itismyhopesomeofyouwillgivethemashot,andhopefully
you'llhaveasmuchfunplayingthemasIdidwritingthem.
Finally,eventhoughIauthoredtheserulesmyself,theywouldneverhaveachievedtheircurrentstate
withouttheinterestandsupportofalltheindividualsdisplayedinthecredits,andbecauseofthis,I'd
liketoextendmypersonalthankstoallthoselisted.

timestorollthedie,andthenumeralafteristhenumber
ofsidesthediebeingrolledshouldhave.Forexample,
2d6meansyourolla6sideddietwiceandaddupthe
results,generatinganumbersomewherebetween2and
12.Mostplayersprefertoplaywithmultiplesetsofdice,
allowingthemtosimplytossmultipledicewiththesame
numberofsidesatonceandtallyuptheresultforspeed
andefficiency.Thatbeingsaid,itsperfectlyfinetoplay
withonlyonesetofdice.
Whengameplaycallsforapercentilecheck,usethe10
sideddietogeneratethenumberbetween1and100.To
dothis,yourollthedietwice.Thefirstresultisthetens
number,andthesecondresultistheonesnumber.For
example,ifataskhasa1%chanceoffailure,youwould
needtorolla0andthena1onyour10sideddietofail.

WHATISAROLEPLAYINGGAME?
Mostmoderndayroleplayinggamesaredifferentfrom
traditionalboardgamesorcardgames.Inaroleplaying
game,theparticipantsplaythepartofspecificcharacters,
actingcooperativelyinsteadofcompetitively.Roleplaying
gamestypicallyemployarefereeorGameMaster(GM,
forshort)tooverseetheflowofplay,determinetheac
tionsofthepeopleandcreaturestheplayersencounter,
andguidetheoverallstory.
Sinceroleplayingisacooperativeeffort,thereareno
winnersorlosers.Theplayersworktogethertowardthe
goaltheGameMasterhasplacedbeforethem.Some
timestheysucceed.Sometimestheyfail.Regardless,the
gameismoreaboutthejourneyandlessaboutwinning.
Forthosewhohaveneverplayedaroleplayinggame,
thismayseemlikeaforeignconcept,anditwouldbefair
towonder,Whatsthepurposeofplayingifthereareno
winnersorlosers?Simplyput,aroleplayinggameisstilla
game,andlikemostgames,thepurposeisfun.Therea
sonroleplayinggamesexcelinthisareaisbecausethey
arenotcompetitive.Roleplayinggamesnaturallyfostera
socialatmosphere.Theyareaboutgettingtogetherwith
yourfriendsandspendingqualitytimecatchingup,laugh
ing,snacking,andplayingagamewherenoonegoes
hometheloser.

LEARNINGTOPLAY
Ifyouarealreadyfamiliarwithotherroleplayinggames,
learningtheSimplicitysystemwillbeeasy.If,however,
youhaveneverplayedaroleplayinggameinyourlife,you
mayneedmoreofanintroductiontothehobbythanthe
serulesprovide.
Likeothergames,theeasiestwaytolearntoplaya
roleplayinggameistohavesomeoneteachyou.Local
gamestoresandhobbyshopstypicallyhostprograms
gearedtowardnewplayers,andthosewhoalreadyplay
arealwaysexcitedtointroducesomeonenewtothehob
by.Ifthisdoesntappealtoyou,therearenumerous
booksandonlineresourcestohelpyougetstarted.If
youdratherbravethewatersalone,keepreading.

PLAYEXAMPLE
Inaroleplayinggame,theplayersplaythepartofthe
characterstheycontrol.Whilesomeplayersenjoytalking
incharacter,sometimesevenimitatingadifferentvoice,
thisisntabsolutelynecessary.Itsreallyonlynecessary
thatyouconveyyourcharactersactionstotheGame
Master.Intheexamplebelow,apartyoffouradventurers
(Kenniththewarrior,Marathecurate,Palikthemage,
andDavinthescoundrel,eachplayedbydifferentplayers)
hasbeensentbythemayorofWydowntoinvestigatea
caveontheoutskirtsofthevillage.TheMayorbelievesan

oriswearingleatherarmor,whichhasadamage
reductionof1.Garthonishitbyatrollfor9pointsof
damage.Hisarmorreducesthedamageby1.Theremain
ingdamageisappliedtoGarthonshealthtotal,reducing
itby8points.IfGarthonhadbeencarryingawooden
shield,whichhasadamagereductionof1,hewouldhave

andquantityasthePCs.Forexample,apartyoffour5th
levelPCswouldfindagroupoffour5thlevelmonstersto
beanaveragefight.Ifyoudesiredatougherskirmish,you
couldaddmonstersorincreasetheleveloftheexisting
monsters.
Eachskirmishhasalevelrating.Tofindtheskirmish
level,simplytotalupthenumberofmonsterlevelsand
dividebythenumberofPCs.Ingeneral,skirmishes2to4
levelsabovetheaveragelevelofthePCsareconsidered

purposeoftheSimplicitysystemistomakesureeveryone
ishavingfun.Sodontfeelbadifyouneedtomakead
justmentsasyougo.IfPCsaredyingeverygame,itsa

ersarekillingthemonsterswithouttakinganyorvery
