born into middle class in Augsberg, southern Germany (Bavaria)

1917

enrolled as medical student at University of Munich: but studies theatre


history w/ Kutscher (biographer of Wedekind)

1918

serves briefly as medic; begins to work as drama critic; writes lampoon of


military; Baal

1919

involved in political cabaret in Munich

1921

BB visits Berlin for 1st time; writes several one-act plays

1922-23

directs (cast quits because of his high-handed approach);


Drums in the Night produced in Munich & Berlin;
BB awarded prize; works on Edward II

1924

Hitler putsch
premiere of Edward II;
moves to Berlin;
hired by Max Reinhardt as dramaturg.

1925

BB supports self as short story writer;


meets Grosz
visits USSR (Stalin in power)

1926

directs Baal;
1st vol. of poetry;
starts reading Communist classics. Adopts phrase "epic theatre"

1927

works with EP on Schwejk ;


works with Kurt Weill on Mahagonny Singspiel;

1928

marries Helene Weigel (actress who is great interpreter of BB's female


roles);
Die Dreigro-schenoper w/ KW is recordbreaking success at Theatre am
Schiffbauerdamm

1930

The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny produced;


1st two vol. essays

1931

A Man's a Man, dir: BB. Galy Gay played by Peter Lorre

1932

The Mother;
open street fighting between fascists and communists

1933

Hitler supporters interrupt several BB plays;


price on BB's head;
BB flees to Switzerland, later Denmark

1934

BB travels, speaks against Nazi government;


drafts most writing on "epic theatre

1936-38

performances of BB plays in Copenhagen & Paris;


begins work on Galileo;

1939

forced to flee to Sweden due to Nazi threats;


writes Mother Courage, an opera and essay on unrhymed verse.

1941

1st production of Mother Courage in Zurich;


BB flees to the German refugee colony in Los Angeles via Vladivostock;
tries to earn $ by screenwriting.

Brecht testifies in front of the HUAC;
leaves for Europe w/ all texts on microfilm

returns to East Berlin;


produces Mother Courage w/ Berliner Ensemble, Helene Weigel in title

tours w/ Berliner Ensemble to Munich, Paris, Poland

Berliner Ensemble is given renovated Theatre am Schiffbauerdamm;


BE productions of Chalk Circle & Mother Courage (later wins 1st
prize in Paris);
BB awarded Stalin Peace Prize;
writes GDR propaganda

1956

begin rehearsals for BE production of Galileo;


BB dies Aug. 14;
Helene Weigel directs BE and production is completed under the direction
of Erich Engel
