The present duty-free entitlement for a person of Indian origin coming
to India on leave is Rs.35,000/-. This means that you can bring goods
worth Rs.35,000/- into India as your personal baggage without paying
any customs duty. This does not include your 'used' personal
belongings like dresses, etc. In addition, you can bring liquor not
exceeding 2 Ltrs., a lap top computer, and some jewelry (a gold chain,
a ring). If the cost of goods that you bring exceeds the above limit of
Rs.35,000/-, you will have to pay customs duty on the excess amount
@ 36.05%. E.g., If the total cost of goods that you bring is estimated
at Rs.50,000/- by the customs officer (Assessing Officer), you will
have to pay customs duty on Rs.15,000/- (difference between
Rs.50,000 and Rs.35,000) at the present rate of duty of 36.05%. Duty
for excess liquor is much higher (Whisky @ 150% and Beer @ 100%).
If you are sending your baggage through cargo (unaccompanied
baggage) the entire baggage is dutiable, i.e., no free allowance is
permitted. If you are coming for good (transfer of residence), the rules
are different and a higher duty-free allowance is permitted.
Please go through the under-mentioned website of cbec for more
details.
