The school of Flavius
Quintus walks slowly to school and stops often, but Horatia goes forward quickly; first she
arrives at school and greets the girls who are waiting near the door; she talks with Iulia, a very
pretty girl. Quintus sees his friend, Gaius, in the road; he calls him. Gaius hurries to school but
when he hears Quintus, he stops and says, What are you doing, Quintus? You should hurry.
You will be late to school. Im going to hurry. Quintus answers, We wont be late, Gaius. He
orders Gaius to wait. He is anxious but waits. And so Quintus and Gaius go forward slowly to
school.
The other children are already there. The teacher goes out the door and orders them to come
in and sit down; the boys want to play, the girls to work. When the teacher doesnt see Quintus
nor Gaius, he is angry and shouts, Why arent Quintus and Gaius here? Why are they late? At
last Quintus and Gaius come in and greet the teacher. But he shouts, Why are you late? You are
bad boys. He orders them to sit down quickly.
The children sit for a long time and listen to the teacher; he shouts for a long time and teaches
the letters. The children write the letters in their tablets; the teacher looks at the tablets and
corrects the letters.
Decimus, a big and foolish boy, learns the letters with difficulty. The teacher orders him to
bring his tablet to him; he looks at the tablet. Decimus, he says, You are stupid; you dont
write the letters correctly. Decimus says, You are wrong, teacher. Im not lazy. I write the
letters correctly. Look! He writes the letters again. But Flavius says, You are impudent,
Decimus, and stupid; you dont write the letters correctly.
The children work for a long time. At last Iulia says, We are working hard, teacher. We write
the letters well; we are tired. And so you should send us home.
Flavius looks at her kindly. Yes, he says. You are working hard, children. And so I order
you to go home. The others hurry home happily, but Flavius orders Decimus to wait in school.
You, Decimus, he says, You should write the letters again. And so Decimus sits in school
miserably while the others play in the road.
Flavius decides to tell a story
The next day Quintus and Horatia arrive early at school, but Decimus arrives late. Flavius
says, Why are you late to school, Decimus? Decimus answers, You are wrong, teacher. Im
not late. The others arrive early. Flavius is very angry; he says, You are impudent, Decimus.
He orders him to sit down and work hard.
Soon the children are writing the letters. They are working hard. At last Horatia says,
Teacher, we are working hard and writing the letters for a long time. We are tired. And so you
should tell us a story. Flavius says, Yes, you are working hard. Because you are good children,
I am willing to tell a story. He orders them to pay attention and listen to him.
