How CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) can hel you

CBThelpsthedevelopmentofourrationalthinking
andbringsustoamorebalancedemotionalstate.By
separatingemotions/feelings,behaviourandthinking
webecomemorecompetentinhandlingadifficult
situation.Thevarioustechniquesitusesaimat
exploringdifferentpointofviews,stoppingthe
automaticthoughtsgeneratedbydifferentsituations
andreachingamorerealisticideaofwhatis
happening,andmakingusmorecapabletodecidehow
appropriateareourthoughtsandouremotionstoa
specificsituation,thereforehowappropriateisour
behaviour.Infact,thesetechniquesarebasedonan
groundprinciplewhichstateadirectlinkbetween
ourthoughts,ouremotionsand,possibly,our
actions.Thesethreecomponentsareinterlinkedin
suchawaythatbyimprovingoneofthemwecreatea
desirablechangeintheothertwo.Weareguided
towardarevisionoftheinterpretationofcertain
realityoreventinordertoascertainitsvalidity.
Thisseemsanimportantpoint:CBTdoesnottryto
replacenegativethoughtswithfalsepositiveones,
CBTlooksforeneliminationofundulyheldopinions,
thoughtsthatarenotgroundedonfactual
observations.Wemayholdanopinionaboutpeopleand
thiscancauseusacertainanxiety:thetaskwehave
istodecidehowmuchwearejustifiedinthis
opinion.Iftheopinionisbasedonfactswelookfor
solutionlikenewbehaviourstoadoptinorderto
overcometheproblem,oriftheopiniondoesn'thave
evidenceinitsfavour,thenwelookforan
alternativepointofview.Anytimeweclarifyour
thoughtsandtheirlinkwithourfeelings,weimprove
ourabilitytothinkandouremotionsbecomesless
wild,whichinturnwillaffectthewaywebehave.
Inordertodealwithourproblemsinaspecificand
preciseway,weareaskedtoisolateathought,then

todescribeourfeelingsandourphysicalsensation
inrelationtothatthought.Wewillinthisway
createaThoughtRecord.Itisimportantto
understandthatonecanstartfromthethoughtsor
fromthebehaviourorfromtheemotion.Thenwecould
startthinkingofanalternativethought,orwecould
askourselveswherearetheevidencesthatvalidates
ourinitialthought.Ifwestartbydescribingour
physicalstatuswecouldthenmovetothequestion
aboutwhatareyouthinking,orhowareyoufeeling,
whatisyourmood.
AnothertechniqueistheDownwardArrowTechnique
whichconsistsinstartingfromonethoughtand
askingwhythisisimportant,thenaskingthesame
questionthefirstanswerandsoonuntilwereacha
sortofmoreindepthunderstandingoftheinitial
thought,weareabletofoundamoresolidgroundor
evenaquitedifferentthoughtfromtheinitialone.
Bydoingweobserveachangeinourmood,wefeel
moreincontrolinthesensethatweseeareduction
ofthepowerthattheinitialemotionwashavingon
us.
Icouldlistmoretoolsbythosetwogiveyouafirst
ideaofthewayCBTapproachtheproblem.
