Iberdrola Engineering is working on meticulously surveying the Qatari grid in order to analyze the feasibility
of deploying a Smart Grid in Qatar. Results of this survey have been the following:
Technical feasibility study for Smart Grid deployment.
Pilot project design that includes: Smart Metering (Electricity and Water), Distributed Energy
Resources (DER) Integration, Distribution Automation and MV monitoring.
Cost-benefit analysis: using EPRIs (Electric Power Research Institute) methodology Iberdrola
Engineering has been able to calculate benefits of the Smart Grid deployment in Kahramaas
network. This quantification includes economic, reliability, environment and security benefits.

Participation as engineering support in the development of the following projects:
PRICE (Project of Smart Grids in the Corredor del Henares). It is a project that aims to respond to
the technological challenges presented worldwide electrical systems
Grid4EU. It is an innovative project proposed by several Smart Grid energy distributors (DSO) mainly
the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Sweden in collaboration with suppliers of

iGREENGrid. It focuses on increasing the capacity for new distributed renewable energy sources (DER)

DISCERN. Its main objective is to determine the optimal degree of intelligence to provide new electricity
networks of Smart Grid benefits
ADVANCED. It aims to develop a framework to allow residential, commercial and industrial consumers
participate in initiatives of "Active Demand" at European level

Design, engineering, procurement, training of operating personnel, supervision of erection and commissioning
of different telecommunication networks associated to the Distribution Dispatch of Constantine region. Very
complex since it is widely dispersed facilities in a very large territory 60.000 km2.
Microwave Network: For interconnection between the CCP (Main Control Centre) y CCS (Secondary
Control Centre). In total 11 pitches between terminal stations and repeaters.
WLL Network: Radio access network of high capacity (29 repeaters and 70 remote stations).
UHF data: Access network of low capacity digital radio (29 repeaters and 1029 remote stations).
UHF voice: For mobile communications between the office and the agents area (23 repeaters, 82 fixed
terminals, 219 mobile terminals and 236 portable terminals).
Telephony System: 4 Switchboards for CCP and CCS network configured and with linked to the mobile
network.
Telecommunications integrator: Allows direct calls between the two networks voice , UHF and
Telephony, in addition to the joint operation of these from the 4 operator stations.
Sistema de telemetering for MV customers: 200 modems GSM and 200 modems by conventional
telephone line.

Automation of hydroelectric plants over 10MW (and some minor with special features). The number of
plants involved in the project were 58, in 4 basins. It included 141 groups, with a rated capacity of 7,956
MW, representing 97% of the hydroelectric power Iberdrola. The aim of the project was the operation and
supervision of the central from a remote operation center, which made necessary the replacement of
control systems, voltage regulators and turbine governors, protection, auxiliary services, etc.
