An overwhelming stench, and a bloody leak into the apartment below, led police
to discover a 31-year-old Bronx woman living with her mothers rotting corpse
Saturday, sources and neighbors said.
A neighbor called the cops about 1 a.m. to complain about a leak from his ceiling
on Decatur Ave. near E. 199th St. in Bedford Park, just a couple of blocks from
Fordham University and the New York Botanical Garden.
It was bloody, Francisco Vargas, 43, said of the leak into his fourth-floor living
room. Cops knocked on the door of the top-floor apartment above his, but
nobody answered.
The buildings alarmed super, Raul Sanchez, 48, went up the fire escape and
saw the dead womans daughter inside the apartment. When cops prepared to
take down the door, the daughter suddenly opened it and darted out, witnesses
said. Inside her pad, police found her 64-year-old mothers badly decomposed
body surrounded by fans, apparently put there in an effort to reduce the stench,
police sources said. There were no obvious signs of trauma, and investigators
have not determined if the victim died from foul play, an accident or natural
causes, police said.
Cops took the daughter into custody for questioning. She wasnt immediately
charged. The city medical examiner will conduct an autopsy to determine how
the mom died. Sources said she appears to have been dead for about two
weeks. Police didnt release the names of the mom or daughter.
