What is Geechee One Magazine? How would you describe
what you‟re all about?
Geechee One Magazine is a print publication that showcases SC
artists, writers, models, and talent. Our mission is to educate,
inform, and entertain 18-34 year olds in the urban communities.
We are a window for upcoming talent to voice their thoughts
and opinions about life and culture.
Are you online or do you have hard copies?
We would be considered more of a community magazine, so we
publish articles about love, health, people you need to know,
health related topics that deals with sex, aids, community lead-
ers, and more. People tend to put us a just a straight hip-hop
magazine but we are more than that. Again we want more free-
lance writers to write on topics that interest them not just on the
hip-hop world.
How has the community received you?
I feel that we are being seen as a door opener for local artists,
models, and writers. The streets are looking for more places to
showcase the talent that we have here in Charleston and I am
proud to be one of the windows that can make that happen. We
are always looking to do community outreach with different
organizations and people.

Nasty Song, the Def Jam debut of Lil
Ru - which impacted at Urban radio in
April - is making its way out of the
Deep South and up the nationwide Me-
diabase Urban chart, hitting #36-bullet
this week with a 2.5 million audience,
and 4 million audience overall.
Nasty Song is the first single from Lil
Ru's long-awaited debut album, 21 &
UP, set for July 7th release in the physi-
cal and digital marketplace. For Lil Ru,
who has been at it for nearly a decade -
and has experienced short-term deals
along the way with Elektra and Capitol
Records - the album is the culmination
of a hard life on his own: growing up on
the streets with a mother currently
incarcerated for manslaughter, and a
father who has never been around.
"I feel like the album represents every-
thing it takes to be a man," he says.
"Whether you're in the club, the streets,
or just struggling all around. People are
going to relate." In Life, Lil Ru details
the trials and tribulations of his younger
life and how his mom's absence affected
his childhood. Like Dat lightens the
mood as Ru goes out of his way to
please the ladies. The party continues
with Yeah That's Money, celebrating
the finer things in life.
"Never having that stable background or
that family, I was alone a lot," says Lil
Ru. "I was able to make a situation
happen with my music and I was able to
feed myself and family off of that," he
concludes. "Music always had me first,
I always stayed focused on that."

You should be happy that you have made it another year. 2010 is here and
you should be overjoyed that you have survived this long. Unfortunately, so
many have not due to bad choices that were made in their lives. Whether the
choice of defending themselves, being in the wrong place at the wrong time,
or even hanging around the wrong crowd. No matter what age you are we
are all indirectly or directly affected by violence. Over 1% of the population
is in jail, and God knows how many have died over nonsense.
What we need to do is get together and make a difference in our community
by talking and getting together and finding ways to stop the negatively. I
would like to start out by calling out all groups, organizations, churches,
individuals, etc, to get together and make plans to not only get kids off the
streets but to find mentors, start clubs, build projects, and do whatever we
have to do to get people out of jails and out of the cemetery. Can this be
done? Yes it Can. It starts with you! Yes you can make a difference! You
can be a proud leader by just signing a petition to get convicts jobs! You can
be a proud member and donate cell phones to non profits such as Stop the
Violence South or People against Rape. You can open your mouth and
volunteer at the Boys and Girls Club or the YMCA. Yes you can make a
difference in one person life.

I, Felicia A. Rivers, the CEO of GeeChee One Magazine, wants you to pick
a weekend out of 2010 and plan a event that promotes the 365 Days of
Peace. WE will totally help you advertise and promote through our website
and print publication. Things that you can do is pass out fliers or pamphlets
demonstrating or explaining some type of violence whether it be domestic,
gang violence, rape, that needs to stop. We can put on small plays and
charge a small fee that we can donate to a non profit organization that helps
out victims of violence. There is so much you and I can do. There is no
excuse to not be part of the 365 Days of Peace. The question now is, “What
are you going to do?”
GPS

A couple of weeks ago a friend told me that someone

she knew had their car broken into while they were
at a football game. Their carwas parked on the green
which was adjacent to the football stadium and
specially allotted to football fans. Things stolen from
the car included a garage door remote control, some
money and a GPS which had been prominently
mounted on the dashboard.

When the victims got home, they found that their

house had been ransacked and just about everything
worth anything had been stolen. The thieves had
used the GPS to guide them to the house. They then
used the garage remote control to open the garage
door and gain entry to the house. The thieves knew
the owners were at the football game, they knew
what time the game was scheduled to finish and so
they knew how much time they had to clean out the
house. It would appear that they had brought a truck
to empty the house of its contents.

Something to consider if you have a GPS - don't put

your home address in it. Put a nearby address (like a
store or gas station) so you can still find your way
home if you need to, but no one else would know
where you live if your GPS were stolen.
The local Carolina scene just recently lost one of its fallen angels. Lil Buna who real name is “Kendra Smalls, was still in her prime time, perform-
ing and traveling inside and outside the Carolinas. Being placed in the wrong place at the wrong time, she was shot in the head at a night club

Michael Joseph Jackson
(August 29, 1958 June 25, 2009)
The "King of Pop," was an American recording
artist, widely regarded as one of the greatest
entertainers who ever lived. With his trademark
black fedora and single, sequined glove, his
unique contributions to music and dance, along
with a highly publicized personal life, made him
a central part of popular culture around the
world for four decades.
One of the few artists to have been inducted into
the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice, his
achievements included multiple Guinness World
Records including the "Most Successful
Entertainer of All Time" 13 Grammy Awards, 13
number one singles, and the sale of over
750 million records. He was also a notable
philanthropist, donating millions of dollars to
the 39 charities he supported, and raising more
through his own Heal the World Foundation.
The seventh child of the Jackson family, he made
his debut in 1968 as a member of The Jackson 5,
beginning a solo career in 1971. His 1982 album
Thriller remains the best-selling album of all
time, with four others Off the Wall (1979), Bad
(1987), Dangerous (1991), and HIStory (1995)
among the best selling. He popularized several
physically complicated dance moves, such as the
robot and the moonwalk, now iconic. He is
widely credited with having transformed the

resided in Goldsboro NC until her tragic death. Just listening to her song
'NC Representa" lets the Carolina's know that she held her ground with

Lil Buna was more than just her rap music. She not only pursued music
but she lived it. At the age of 19 and 20 she was living a life to be desired.

dents"). First Carolina + female rap artist nominated for SEA (Southern

New York visiting family and sadly received her Adult Diploma a few days
after she died never knowing she accomplished her educational goal.
She was a street poet, who was the voice of every urban citizen who
could not verbally express themselves.

"Scream", ensuring his popularity well into the
1990s.
Jackson's personal life generated significant
controversy. His changing appearance was
noticed from the early 1980s, his skin appearing
paler and his facial features becoming almost
androgynous. He was accused in 1993 of child
sexual abuse, and though no charges were
brought, his health suffered when he started
using painkillers to cope with the stress. He
married twice, first in 1994 and again in 1996,
and fathered three children, one of them with a
surrogate mother, actions that triggered more
speculation about his life. In 2005, he was tried
and acquitted of different child molestation
allegations, which provoked a further decline in
his health.
He died at the age of 50 on June 25, 2009, in Los
Angeles, after suffering a cardiac arrest. His
memorial service was broadcast live around the
world, watched by up to one billion people.

This article is to bring awareness to those of you who are misled
about what a movement really is!! The definition of a movement
is the activities of a group toward achievement of a goal. For
example, Civil Rights Movement, which is one that we all can
relate to was a movement. If Martin Luther King Jr, Malcolm X,
Jesse Jackson and all others during this era who was apart of the
movement charged all churches, other local community leaders
for every speech, boycott, sit in, or march that they lead, then we
will still be segregated now.
If all the spokespersons for the movement were a chief then
we will still be segregated NOW! Somebody has to lead and our
leadership has been in question for years. Don’t allow greed to
misguide the mission “TO BREAK OUR ARTISTS”!!! When
you have influential people in the Carolina Movement saying
derogatory/bad things about our movement in national maga-
zines doesn’t help our movement either. Overcharging inde-
pendent artists doesn’t help our movement. To achieve our
goals shouldn’t be done on the artist’s back. Don’t get me
wrong some costs just can’t be avoided but we all need to ne-
gotiate to where its not detrimental to all parties.
In the Carolinas right now the biggest issue that I hear is
“Radio Station DJs don’t play our sh*t”. This is a very serious
issue that we have in North and South Carolina. Radio station
djs are very influential in breaking artists. But the problem
doesn’t start with the actual djs because some of them in the
Carolinas want to play your music but can’t because they have
bosses too. So ask yourself “How can I get around radio
stations and their djs not supporting our own artists? Simple.
Stop supporting events that they sponsor. Stop going to events
advertised on their stations. Boycott the radio with their F*ck
You Give Me Your Money attitude. The same way MLK Jr
did boycotts. The same way Malcolm X led marches. Remember
the Montgomery Alabama Bus Boycott?? That changed because
they felt a financial blow to their income. We are the people that
support these companies and they in turn don’t support us the
COMMUNITY!!! If you are an artist or you know a artist spread
these words in this article to them. Because not only do they not
support our artists(Our Community Voice) nor do they support
the media avenues that support YOU!! That’s why its important
to support your media outlets such as Geechee One Mag, Caro-
lina Exposed Dvd, Carolina Exposed TV and Buck TV, because
we are the only ones that support you CAROLINA!!!
Stop Disrespecting the Grind!!! This goes out to all these
award shows. I totally support awarding serious artists that’s out
here grinding and putting in work, but to ignore artist because
they don’t pay to perform or advertise with your company that’s
BULLSH*T!!!!! Respect the music and the grind!! To have an
award show and you don’t nominate artists like Piazo, Pachino
Dino, TROC, Boss G, Tef Kaluminoti, TMack, Marion West-
wood and all the other artists that’s been doing this for years. But
you nominate Joe Blow because he’s dumb enough to pay you to
email somebody a flyer. The grind isn’t about that the movement
isn’t about that. The movement is when you leave your state to
do music/network with others and when you get to their city and
its nothing but love. Ask yourself, “Who’s going to have the
backs of the little ones coming up, if we don’t” That’s real!! I’m
right here with you my people. I’m going through the grind with
you. They tried to box me out and silence our movement. The
same ones that stand right here saying they for Carolina, but
push industry artists for free but charge the independents an arm
and a leg for what you giving these other artists for FREE!!!

If you’re not familiar with the Up Against
The Wall movement then you definitely
will be by the end of this summer. It is
2009 and clearly their time to shine. Down
South Kingpins and Gangstas or aptly
noted as DSKG, is backed by rap giants
C.A.T.M.A.N. and Product. This triangle
offense is more than complete when you
factor in the weight of media monster, DJ
Sean John. I forgive you if you’ve been
under a rock and can’t understand what’s
about to happen. Formerly a crime family,
DSKG boasts front man C.A.T.M.A.N
whose acronym stands for Cash And
Things, Murder and Narcotics. Problem is.
Catman is currently in a battle for his free-
dom which could potentially shake things
up. Not to worry, though. When it comes
to Feds, Catman is a bully. He’s beaten
charges before. Fresh off of this latest stint
of time, he’s back with P.W.I.D. Posses-
sion With Intent to Distribute Volume 1,
which is hosted by none other than DJ
Sean John and that’s just one of four new
mixtapes. PWID Vol. 1 gives the streets
what they want on the song “So Mighty“.
Be sure to listen to “I Be Smokin’” and
“Go Hard”. Don’t get it twisted, Catman
has been in this game for a while now.
He’s had a previous deal with Omen Re-
cords that turned sour. While he no longer
records at Pathfinders, he does record with
Big Rick, TR Flow, Shrimp and Spence to
name a few. Catman was born listening to
hip hop and at age 10, he began to craft his
own rhymes. When asked how he feels
about the growth of hip-hop from then to
now, he simply replies that he has no love
lost. Pure unadulterated raw and uncut hip
-hop is what he has come to prefer. His
aspirations for the future are to put the
state on the map. He has a clear-cut goal

rapping for many years, he most notably

past two years. He is featured on P.W.I.D

Scarlito. Product and Scarlito have also
been nominated for song of the year,
“Drop In The Jar” on the DJ Sean John
mixtape, “Can’t Ban The HustleMan”.
Currently in the process of building their
own studio, Product comes down to this
interview with a purpose. In fact, during
the interview he was called back to Killa
Hill due to an emergency in his own
home. What is his purpose you ask? To
promote the Carolina Chain. All local art-
ists especially, but not limited to. “Keep a
link in that chain because when one get’s
pulled, ALL are coming.” Speaking of
local artists is when Product mentions his
primary inspirations. Big dog, June, CEO
of Up Against The Wall gave him his
drive. Local artists give him the hunger
and gives the advice to always look at

Sean John. In fact he originally
downloaded the song from Lil’ Ru’s
myspace music page. Local artists pay
attention! You already know that DJ Sean
John is the house DJ at Da Tunnel. At 3am
Da Tunnel becomes a strip club and the
best time to break new records in such a
setting. As long as the beat sounds good
and the girls vibe to it, the consumers
commence to make it rain. Simple. Think
a step further. The song sounds good at
night and slowly makes its way to daytime
airplay. Next the radio. Since joining in on
the Up Against The Wall movement, DJ
Sean John needs a calculator. Let’s see if

September. He personally admits to hav-
ing no more hard copies of those mix-

Sean John is at about six this year. Four in
April alone. One completed last week with
OJ Da Juiceman for The 3rd Annual
Celebrity Car, Truck, and Bike Show. Yes
sir, THAT is full-time grinding. He’s
either dj’ing or in the studio. As far as
inspirations go, whereas most dj’s would
site Funkmaster Flex or Jam Master Jay,
DJ Sean John states that he has never met
or it’s too late to meet those people. HIS
inspirations are DJ KUB and DJ B-Lord.
Since meeting DJ KUB, he has became a
monster. Once linked up with The Talk of
The Chuck Dj Kub, Sean John admits to
have taken his ability to a whole another
level. Since the early days he hustled mix-
tapes. He runs his music game similar to
the dope game. In the beginning. Sean
John started with Killa Hill Entertainment
and branched off two years ago to join the
Up Against The Wall Movement. He was
nominated “Slept On DJ Of The Year” at
The 2008 SC Music Awards in Niche
magazine. He is now Nominated for DJ Of
The Year & Mixtape of the Year at The
2009 Geechee One Awards for Geechee
One Magazine. One industry person DJ
Sean John sites is DJ Khaled. Whereas
most dj’s run to Atlanta and New York for
new music, DJ Khaled keeps his city and
state at the forefront of his operation. For
instance Plies, Trick Daddy, and Rick
Ross always make way into the mix of
things. That’s the type of legacy DJ Sean
John intends to create in South Carolina.

catch up with Da Ruffside Enter-
tainment. The Ruffside Entertain-
ment consists of the three busy
individuals Skscuz, LIK, and DG.
The three started the partnership
since October 2008, but didn’t
really get their names out there
until December of that year.
When asked on how they first met,
Skscuz, who is the one to thank
for the ideas and concepts and the
moves of the company says, “We
already knew each other. LIK is
my cousin. We hooked up with
DG through LIK’s brother JRock
who is now incarcerated. LIK and
DG started raping since middle
school. I started free styling since
back in the day but never wrote
anything down. Everyone is doing
their own thing.”

Why is it that the youth of today are sold on the idea that they
should go to jail? Why do kids think that the only way to make
money is via illegal actions, rap music, or sports? How have we
moved from creating some of the most important inventions in
the world, and multiple scientific discoveries that have saved
untold millions of lives, to (some of us) waiting to be handed
money?

Not only that, but why is it that in a mere 40 years we have gone
from a people that led the nation from a mindset of prejudice
and segregation to that of subservience. Dr. Martin Luther King
never advocated that, Malcolm X never believed that. Both men
were conservatives, especially in the political world of today. Yet
Conservatives that are Black today are shunned and rejected.
Why?

I really don’t understand why we have come to a place where

intelligent Blacks that offer strong reasonable opinions, that
differ from the Liberal mindset, are considered to have
abandoned their race. I don’t understand why just speaking
American English is considered an insult to so many. It leaves
me with my head spinning.

I know of some younger African Americans that have bought

into the commoditized view of Black culture. They rush out to
buy anything that is Hip Hop, they obsess over rappers and
bling. They are the first to go to any movie that is Black-oriented
- no matter the quality - the first to buy a big SUV while living in
the projects, the first to get $500 jeans and/or Prada shoes
while they can’t pay rent. And they are the first to denounce the
Black businessman that questions the economic programs of
President Obama, or the kid going to college.

Why, in America, would Black Conservatives consistently be

called sell-outs, yet entertainers that are followed and emulated
and are merely high paid employees selling the denigration and
commoditization of Black culture are seen as being pro-Black?

How can an African American that rises from poverty, gets an

education even though in sub-standard schools, goes to and

creates a career - maybe even a business - so that they can raise
