Wonders of the World

There are eight known Wonders of the World. Two of them are found in the Philippines.
They are Banaue Rice Terraces and Mayon Volcano.
The Banaue Rice Terraces are located in the Mountain Province. They were carved on the
mountainsides by the natives. These terraces were needed by the tribes for planting. They did not have
enough flat level land to plant rice in. These terraces are more popularly called great stairways to
heaven. Far south of Luzon is Mayon Volcano in Albay. It is known for its perfect cone shape.
Nobody worked on its shape. Nature did it. Despite several eruptions that have already occurred, Mt.
Mayon remains to be majestic perfect cone-shaped volcano.
These two world wonders are one man-made and the other natural. They are both natures gifts
every Filipino is proud of.

THE LEGEND OF THE MOON FESTIVAL
Once upon a time, there lived in China a powerful and wicked king. He treated the people of his
kingdom badly. The queen, however, was beautiful and kind. As the years passed, the king feared that
he would soon grow old and die. Ill give a huge reward to anyone who can make me immortal, he
said.
One day, a magician from a far-away country brought the king some medicines. It will make
your majesty live for thousands of years, he said. When the queen heard this, she was worried.
Oh dear! she said. The people of China will not know peace or happiness if that happens!
What shall I do? In the end, she decided to steal the medicine. Unfortunately, the king caught her
doing it. In order to prevent him from getting hold of the medicine, she drank it. At once she felt herself
become lighter and lighter. Slowly and gently, she floated into the sky, towards the moon. She had
become a fairy!
The Chinese believe that the fairy is still living in the moon. They also believe that the moon is
brightest on the fifteenth day of the eighteenth month. So, on that day, they pray to the Moon Fairy
and thank her for saving them from the rule of the wicked king. They call this festival the Moon Festival.
