Experiment Title: To Install the Internal & External Modem NIC & IP Address.
MODEM:
INSTALLATION STEPS OF INTERNAL MODEM:
STEP 1: Unplug your computer, and remove any wires or other peripherals from the ports at the rear of
the tower.
STEP 2: Open your tower to reveal the motherboard and the available components slots.
STEP 3: Locate the appropriate slot in the motherboard for your modem. It is either a PCI or ISA. It should
be easy to discern which is appropriate for your modem based on the design of the connectors.
STEP 4: Press the modem firmly into place on the motherboard, making sure the connectors are completely
in contact with all of the pins.
STEP 5: Close the tower and plug everything in once more.
STEP 6: Turn on your PC.
STEP 7: Wit while Windows XP tries to detect any new hardware that has hardware that has been
installed. Windows database of hardware is extensive; more 56 K modems are listed in the
cache file. A bubble may appear, indicating that new hardware has been found.
STEP 8: Click on the bubble to bring you to the: ADD NEW HARDWARE menu. From there,
WINDOWS XP will walk you through the steps needed to both install and troubleshoot your
new modem.
NETWORK INTERFACE CARD (NIC):STEP 9: Be sure to place any software provided by the modems manufactures into the appropriate
drive. Drivers for providing or improving modem functionally are often provided on software CDs.
A network interface controller (NIC) is a hardware device that handles an interface to a computer network
and allows a network-capable device to access that network. The NIC has a ROM chip that contains a
unique number, the multiple access (MAC) Address that is permanent. The MAC address identifies the
device uniquely on the LAN. The NIC exists on both the Physical Layer (Layer 1) and the Data Link
Layer (Layer 2) of the OSI model.
Sometimes the worlds controller and card are used interchangeably when talking
about networking because the most common NIC is the network interface card. Although card is
more commonly used, it is less encompassing. The controller or it may refer of a network card that is
installed inside a computer, or it may refer to an embedded component as part of a computer motherboard
, a router, expansion card, printer interface or a USB device.
A MAC address is 48-bit network hardware identifier that is permanently set on a ROM chip
on the NIC to identify that device on the network. The first 24-bit field is called the Organizationally
Unique Identifier (OUI) and is largely manufacturer-specific. Each OUI allows for 16,777,216 Unique
NIC addresses. Smaller manufacturers that do not have a need for over 4096 unique NIC addresses may
opt to purchase an Individual Address Block (IAB) instead. An IAB consists of the 24-bit OUI plus a
12-bit extension (taken from the potential NIC portion on the MAC address.)
There are four techniques used to a transfer data, the NIC may use one or more of there techniques.
Polling is where the microprocessor examines the status of the peripheral under program control.
Programmed I/O is where the microprocessor alert the designated peripheral by applying its address to
the systems address bus.
Interrupt-driven I/O is where the peripheral alerts the microprocessor that its ready to transfer data.
DMA is where an intelligent peripheral assumes control of the system bus to access memory directly.
This removes load from the CPU but requires a separate processor on the card.
A network card typically has a twisted pair, BNC, or AUI socket where the network cable is
connected, and a few LEDs to inform the user of wheter the network is active, and whether or not
there is data being transmitted on it. This means they can support a notional maximum transfer rate
of 10,100 or 1000 Megabits per second.

Experiment Title: To Study of an E-Mail (Electronic-Mail) System.
PROCEDURE:
Email is shortened term meaning Electronic Mail. Email much the same as a letter, only that it is exchanged
in a different way. Computers use the TCP/IP protocol suite to send email messages in the form of packets.
The first thing you need to send and receive emails in an email address. When you create an account with
a internet service provider you are usually given an email address to send from and receive emails. If this
isnt the case create an email address/ account at web sites such as yahoo, hotmail and Lycos.
The email message Instead of using a pen to write a letter on paper, youre using your keyboard to
type an email message in an email program on your computer.
Sending the email-When the email is finished and has been addresses to the recipients email address,
you dont put a stamp on it and post it but press the Send button in the email program. This makes the
email message go on its journey.
Email transport-Like postal services transport letters and parcel, email servers transmit email
messages from sender to recipient .Usually ,emails are not delivered to the recipient directly ,though,
but waiting at the nearest mail server to be picked up by them.
Fetching new mail-If youve got new mail in your mailbox, you go and fetch it. Similarly, your
email program can check for new email messages at your mail server and download them for youre
to read.
The header of an email includes the From:, To:, Cc: and Subject: fields. So you enter the name and address
of the recipient in the Form: field, the name and address of anyone who is being copied to in the Cc: field
and the subject of the message obviously in the subject: field. The part below the header of the email is
called the body, and contains the message itself. Spelling the correct address is critical with an email. Like
with a normal postal letter, If u get the address wrong it wont go to the correct receiver. If u send an email
to an address which does not exist that message will come back to you as a address unknown error routine .
EMAIL ADDRESS
An e-mail address typically has two main parts:
editor@internet-guide.co.uk
The first field is the user name (editor) which refers to the recipients mailbox. Then there is the sign (@)
which is the same in every email address. Then come the host name(internet-guide),which can also be
called the domain name. This refers to the mail server address, most usually having a individual IP address.
The final part of an email address includes th top-level domain (TLD).For the above address this is
co.uk, which is for commercial sites based in the UK.
The advantages of e-mail are:
1. Its fast-Messages can be sent anywhere around the world in an instant
2. Its cheap-Transmission usually costs nothing, or at the most, very little
3. Its simple-Easy to use, after initial setup
4. Its efficient-Sending to a group can be done in one step
5. Its versatile-Picture PowerPoints or other files can be sent too.

Free and open source software, also called FLOSS is software which is liberally licensed to grant the right
of users to study, change, and improve its design through the availability of its source code.

This approach has gained both momentum and acceptance as the potential benefits have
been increasingly recognized by both individuals and corporate players.
'F/OSS' is an inclusive
term generally synonymous with both free software and open source software which describe
similar development models, but with differing cultures and philosophies.
'Free software' focuses on
the philosophical freedoms it gives to users and 'open source' focuses on the perceived strengths of its
peer-to-peer development model.
Many people relate to both aspects and so 'F/OSS' is a term that can
be used without particular bias towards either camp.
Free software licenses and open source licenses
are used by many software packages.
The licenses have important differences, which mirror
the differences in the ways the two kinds of software can be used and distributed and reflect differences in
the philosophy behind the two.
