Answer Key, Fifth Grade Sample Contest
1. A (The first question in every OML test involves topics the students should be very
comfortable with. We want the students to begin each test on a positive note. In this case, the
answers are 91, 88, 81, 80, and 89, so A is the largest.)
2. B (100 nickels = $5, which is the same as 20 quarters. Also, 5 nickels = 1 quarter, so 100
nickels = 100 5 quarters.)
3. D (One beluga whale can eat 50 pounds of food in a day, so one beluga could eat 50 7 =
350 pounds of food in a week. Three beluga whales would eat 350 + 350 + 350 = 1,050 pounds
of food in a week.)
4. E (We start using algebra-style questions like this at young grades because it forces the
students to think more deeply about topics they are otherwise familiar with. Answer choice A,
12, is the most commonly chosen wrong answer.)
5. C (Each person can have three brownies, leaving one brownie left over. Since there are four
people, to split it equally, each person can have of the final brownie, or 3 brownies in all.)
6. A (The first-place finisher jumped 16 feet, 4 inches; the second-place finisher jumped 14 feet,
6 inches. The difference between those distances is two inches less than two feet, or 22 inches.)
7. E (8:51 p.m. is a common wrong answer for students who try to add 7:48 + 103 vertically in
columns.)
8. C (.13 + .4 + .005 + .5 = 1.035, so 1.035 inches of rain fell over those four days.)
9. B (Trisha makes 20 of profit per glass of lemonade sold. Therefore, she makes $1 of profit
on five glasses of lemonade, and she makes $3 in profit on 15 glasses sold.)
10. B (This is a great problem-solving question. Answers C and E can be eliminated because
they do not provide the required perimeter of nine inches. Answers A and D are also not correct
because, in both answers, the length of the longest side is greater than the sum of the other two,
which is impossible. If your students dont agree, have them try to draw a triangle with sides of 5
inches, 2 inches, and 2 inches!)
11. C (As the hint suggests, if a child knows some basic rules of divisibility, there are better
ways to figure this out than actually solving each division problem. Answer choices A, B, D, and
E can all be eliminated because they involve an odd dividend being divided by an even divisor.
In addition, answer C must be correct because all numbers ending in zero can be evenly divided
by five.)
12. C (The six children are a combined 17 + 13 + 10 + 6 + 4 + 4 = 54 years old. On average,
then, they are 54 6 = 9 years old.)
13. A (There are two layers of 10 cubes each, or 20 cubes total.)
14. B (Since the second-place finisher received 84 votes less than the winner and 84 votes more
than the third-place finisher, the person in second place received exactly one-third of the votes, or
100 votes. The winner received 184, and the third-place finisher received 16.)
15. B (There were nine cookies when Paul got to the table. He ate three, leaving six. Sarah ate
two of the six, leaving four cookies for Samantha.)
