Costly and Dangerous
Shippers are confronted with a minefield of
regulations that require specific training to
ensure compliance.

In 2013 DOT increased the baseline penalty for

undeclared shipment of batteries at $40,000 for
air shipments and $20,000 for ground shipments.

Course Format
The webinar is divided into separate modules and incudes a comprehensive exam.
Attendees receive detailed instruction on how to ship lithium metal batteries, lithium
ion/polymer batteries, lead acid batteries, other types of batteries, and batteries
packed with or contained in equipment. Each attendee receives a valuable sample
set of procedures and checklists for use in developing operational plans. Attendees
who successfully complete the exam receive a certificate of completion.

In 2006 FedEx personnel discovered smoke

coming from one of four boxes containing 250
loose-packed nickel metal hydride batteries.
Weight from the loose batteries had damaged the
box; a lack of short circuit protection caused four
batteries to ignite en route from London to St.
Louis, Missouri, potentially putting the crew and
others in grave danger. U.K. authorities later fined
the shipper more than $4,000.

The new rules and requirements apply to: lead acid batteries (vehicles,
