With the inaugural PARCC test
just a couple months away, some
community members from municipalities in the Lenape Regional High School District are worried about the kids who decided
to not take the new standardized
assessment.
They are worried those students could be left to simply sit
and stare.
A small group of parents and
other residents came to last
weeks board of education meeting to encourage the district to
pass a policy for students choosing to opt out of the PARCC test.

event with the third annual

Evesham is growing, literally.
At its last meeting, Evesham
Township Council approved the
annexation of 2.9 acres of land
from neighboring Medford Township to help facilitate the development of a new apartment complex.
The land, known as the Aristone Tract, is located on the westbound side of Route 70 and is
comprised of land encompassing
the Ronald Aristone office building and the surrounding Aristone
properties previously under the
ownership of the Carmela Aristone Trust.

new complex, had its attorney,

Jeffry Baron, first propose the annexation to council in a presentation in early spring.
In that presentation, Baron
said it was Fieldstones original
intention to build the complex,
with more than 200 apartments
and several thousand square feet
of commercial space, on both
Evesham and Medford lands.
However, according to Baron,
when Medford officials were presented with the idea, they did not
want residential units inside the
township, citing increased school
costs as a concern.
To rectify the situation, Fieldstone offered to pay Medford to
simply de-annex to Evesham the
portion of land in Medford on
which the complex would be
built.
Evesham officials have previ-

ously said they did not have a concern of rising school costs, similar to that of Medford, citing studies in which it was shown that
one- and two-bedroom apartments, most of what will be in the
new complex, attract very few
families with school-aged children.
Studies have found that little
to no children go into one- to twobedroom communities, and these
communities are usually constructed without playgrounds,
without any of the amenities that
children are brought to, Evesham Mayor Randy Brown said.
In the months following that
first presentation to Evesham,
Fieldstone and Medford worked

The Evesham Township Police
Department Officer of the
Month for December is Patrolman Sean Dolphin.
Dolphin has been a member of
the Evesham Police Department
for 14 years. He is being commended for his outstanding investigative skills in locating a homicide suspect.
On Dec. 11, Dolphin responded
to assist units from the Gloucester Township Police Department
with locating possible suspects in
connection
to
a
missing
person/homicide investigation
that occurred in their jurisdiction. Having been supplied a description of the suspect vehicle
and a possible direction of travel,
Dolphin used his investigative
skills to locate the vehicle in a

nearby shopping
center
parking lot. A
tactical
approach
was
made of the
business, and
the two suspects were detained as they
exited. It was
DOLPHIN
later learned
that one of the suspects had in
fact murdered the Gloucester
Township resident and disposed
of her body in Evesham Township.
This discovery assisted the
Gloucester Township Police in
bringing closure to a missing person case.
Dolphin should be commended
for his outstanding investigative
skills and commitment to making
Evesham a safer place.

he nearby town of Burlington

Township was shaken to its
core last week when news was
released of two high school students
who hung themselves days apart.
Two friends, a 15-year-old freshman
and an 18-year-old senior who both attended Burlington Township High
School, were found hanged inside their
homes only four days apart. Two days
before the senior was found, he spoke
at his friends celebration of life.
News such as this is bone chilling.
We feel deeply for the families, friends,
fellow students, teachers, administrators and members of the community
who have more questions than answers right now. Even though this did
not happen in our town, it is news that
hits hard at our homes.

Life is fragile, that we all know, but

thats never more clear than at times

not just by his or her parents, siblings
and extended families, but also their
friends, school community, police officers, mayors, crossing guards and

other members of the community. And

it is the job of these other members of
the community of us to remind our
kids just how great life is.
Life cannot be taken for granted.
Life is precious. Life is worth living.

the third leading cause of death among
youth between 10 and 19. But it is preventable. If you or someone you know

Council, BOE hold reorganization meetings

Brown returns as Evesham mayor; Fisicaro sworn in again as BOE president

On Jan. 5 Evesham Township Council
and the Evesham Township School District
Board of Education held their reorganization meetings and first meetings of 2015.
The municipal meeting started at 5 p.m.,
during which Republican Randy Brown
was sworn in for his third term as mayor
with his family by his side.
Also sworn in were Republican Councilman Steve Zeuli and Councilwoman Debbie Hackman, both of whom, along with
Brown, won re-election in November, keeping the council entirely Republican.
At the council reorganization meeting,
2014 Deputy Mayor Ken DAndrea nominated Councilman Bob DiEnna to the position
of deputy mayor for 2015, keeping up the

tradition of the position of deputy mayor

annually rotating between members of the
council.
DiEnnas nomination received a unanimous vote from his fellow council members, and with his family by his side, DiEnna was sworn in to the position.
Across town at 7 p.m., the ETSD BOE
meeting started, with Joe Fisicaro Jr. being
nominated and sworn in for another term
as board president. Fisicaro held the position throughout 2014.
Also sworn in at the meeting were board
members JoAnne Harmon and Sandy Student, along with new board member Elaine
Barbagiovanni.
Student, Harmon and Barbagiovanni
were the three candidates with the largest
percent of the vote of the five candidates
who ran for the board in November.

Also approved at the council and BOE

meetings were each bodys respective 2015
meeting schedule.
The next meeting of the Evesham Township Council will be held on Jan. 20 at the
regular meeting place of Evesham Township Municipal Building, and the next
meeting of the ETSD BOE will take place
at the regular meeting place of DeMasi
Middle School on Jan. 22.

Township Council meeting during which the annexation was approved, all members of Medford
Council were in agreement
with the deal, and said it was sensible for the townships and developer.

We felt it was in the best interest of the town, then Medford

Mayor Chris Buoni said.
At that meeting, Buoni also
said much of the 2.9 acres that are
now a part of Evesham consisted
of wetlands, which would make
other development on the land
very unlikely.
It doesnt have potential for
development, Buoni said.
Once Medford approved the annexation, all that was left was for
Evesham Council to also approve
it.
Evesham Deputy Mayor Ken
DAndrea said the two sides had
been discussing the deal to make

the parcel of land more complete

for some time, and council was
thankful everyone was able to
come to an agreement.
Were thankful that our good
friends next-door, the township of
Medford, have authorized the
ability to transfer the deed,
DAndrea said.
Evesham Township Director of
Community Development Nancy
Jamanow said the next step
would be bringing a resolution
before council designating the
newly acquired land as in need of
redevelopment or rehabilitation,
to bring it in line with the surrounding area.

spoke on behalf of the parents,
presenting the board with a sample resolution the Delran School
District passed in the fall. The
resolution provides children who
opt out of the PARCC test an alternative rather than sitting in
front of an empty computer
screen, a concept she called sit
and stare.
I'm asking the district to consider passing a resolution similar
to this, she said.
Bandoner's concerns stem
from a memo state Department of
Education Commissioner David
Hespe sent to district administrators across the state last fall. In
the memo, Hespe stated schools
are not required to provide an alternative educational program
for students who do not participate in the statewide assessment.
Bandoner will not have a child
in the Lenape district taking the
test this year, as seniors do not
participate in PARCC. However,
she said her third-grade daughter
is opting out of PARCC and believes students in all school districts should have an option if
their choose to not take the test.
We can offer them the opportunity to go to study hall or to
read a book, she suggested.
Medford Lakes resident Kevin
Ellicott agreed with Bandoner,
saying he understands most stu-

dents will be taking the test. However, he added students who opt
out could be distracting to testtakers and felt there could be a solution where non-test takers can
be productive and students taking
the test won't be distracted.
We can either tell our students to sit and stare at the computer or we can let them study,
Ellicott said.
District officials and the board
thanked Bandoner for bringing
her comments forward. Board solicitor Arthur Risden said the district will take Bandoner's comments into consideration during
future decisions made on PARCC
testing.

Board reorganizes for 2015

Prior to the start of its regular
January meeting, the board of education swore in four members
who won seats during the elections in November.
Three incumbent board members, Paula Lee of Mt. Laurel,
David Stow of Medford and Linda
Eckenhoff of Southampton, were
reelected to new three-year terms.
Barry Fitzgerald of Evesham was
also elected, having defeated incumbent Joanne Sanferraro in
November. Fitzgerald was previously appointed to the Lenape
board in 2011 to fill the seat of
Joseph Fisicaro. He served on the
board through 2012, when he lost
to Sanferraro in an election.
For the second consecutive
year, Stow was unanimously chosen to be the board president, and
Eckenhoff was picked to be vice
president.

Knights of Columbus to host

On Jan. 24, the Knights of

Arc) and Kateri Tekakwitha,
Council No. 12229 (St. Isaac
