While referr ing t o t he Sun and t he Moon in t he Qur 'an, it is em phasized t hat each
m oves in a definit e orbit .
" I t is He Who creat ed t he night and t he day, and t he sun and t he m oon. They sw im

( The Qur 'an, 21: 33)
I t is m ent ioned in anot her ver se, t oo, t hat t he Sun is not st at ic but m oves in a definit e

( The Qur 'an, 37: 38)
These fact s com m unicat ed in t he Qur'an have been discovered by ast ronom ical

Sun is t raveling at t he enor m ous speed of 720,000 kilom et ers an hour in t he direct ion
of t he st ar Vega in a part icular or bit called t he Solar Apex. This m eans t hat t he sun

There ar e about 200 billion galaxies in t he universe, consist ing of near ly 200 billion
st ars in each. Most of t hese st ars have planet s, and m ost of t hose planet s have
sat ellit es. All of t hese heavenly bodies m ove in very pr ecisely com put ed or bit s. For
m illions of year s, each has been " sw im m ing" along in it s ow n orbit in per fect har m ony

The orbit s in t he univer se do not only belong t o celest ial bodies.
The galaxies also t r avel at enorm ous speeds in com put ed, planned

This wor d int er pret ed as " cyclical" in Qur'an t ranslat ions also has m eanings of " sending
back" or " r et urning" .
As know n, t he at m osphere sur rounding t he Eart h consist s of m any layer s. Each layer
ser ves an im por t ant pur pose for t he benefit of life. Research has revealed t hat t hese
layers have t he funct ion of t ur ning t he m at er ials or rays t hey are exposed t o back int o
space or back down t o t he Eart h. Now let us exam ine w it h a few exam ples of t his
" recycling" funct ion of t he layer s encircling t he Ear t h.
The t r oposphere, 13 t o 15 kilom et er s above t he Ear t h, enables w at er vapor rising from
t he sur face of t he Ear t h t o be condensed and t ur n ba ck as r ain.
The ozone layer, at an alt it ude of 25 kilom et er s, r eflect s har m ful radiat ion and
ult raviolet light com ing from space and t ur ns bot h ba ck int o space.
The ionosphere, r e fle ct s r adio waves br oadcast from t he Eart h ba ck down t o different
part s of t he wor ld, j ust like a passive com m unicat ions sat ellit e, and t hus m akes
w ireless com m unicat ion, radio, and t elevision br oadcast ing possible over long

The m agnet osphere layer t ur n s t he harm ful r adioact ive part icles em it t ed by t he Sun

The fact t hat t his proper t y of t he at m osphere's layers, t hat was onlt dem onst r at ed in

t hat t he Qur'an is t he w ord of God.

" I t is He Who creat ed everyt hing on t he eart h for you and t hen direct ed His at t ent ion

( The Qur 'an, 2: 29)
" Then He t urned t o heaven when it w as sm oke. I n t wo days He det erm ined t hem as
seven heavens and revealed, in ever y heaven, it s ow n m andat e."
( The Qur 'an, 41: 12)
The wor d " heavens" , which appear s in m any ver ses in t he Qur 'an, is used t o r efer t o
t he sky above t he Ear t h, as w ell as t he ent ire univer se. Given t his m eaning of t he
w ord, it is seen t hat t he Eart h's sky, or t he at m osphere, is m ade up of seven layer s.
The Ear t h has all t he
at t ribut es t hat are
needed for life. One of
t hem is t he at m osphere,
w hich serves as a shield
pr ot ect ing living t hings.
Today, it is an
est ablished fact t hat t he
at m osphere is m ade up
of differ ent layer s lying
on t op of one anot her.
Just as it is described in
t he Qur'an, t he
at m osphere is m ade up
of exact ly seven layers.
This is cer t ainly one of
t he m iracles of t he
Qur 'an.
I ndeed, t oday it is know n t hat t he wor ld's at m osphere consist s of differ ent layer s t hat
lie on t op of each ot her. Fur t herm ore, it consist s, j ust as is descr ibed in t he Qur 'an, of
exact ly seven layer s. I n a scient ific source, t he subj ect is descr ibed as follow s:
Scient ist s have found t hat t he at m ospher e
consist s of several layers. The layer s
differ in such physical propert ies as
pressur e and t he t ypes of gasses. The
layer of t he at m ospher e closest t o Eart h is
called t he TROPOSPH ERE. I t cont ains
about 90% of t he t ot al m ass of t he

STRATOSPH ERE. The OZON E LAYER is
t he part of t he st r at ospher e w here
absor pt ion of ult raviolet r ays occur s. The
layer above t he st rat osphere is called t he
M ESOSPH ERE. The TH ERM OSPH ERE
lies above t he m esosphere. The ionized
gases form a layer w it hin t he

The out erm ost part of Ear t h's at m osphere

As we have not iced, it is st at ed in t he ver se t hat m ount ains have t he funct ion of
pr event ing shocks in t he Eart h.
This fact w as not know n by anyone at t he t im e t he Qur 'an was
revealed. I t was in fact brought t o light only r ecent ly as a result
of t he findings of m oder n geology.
Accor ding t o t hese findings, m ount ains em erge as a result of
t he m ovem ent s and collisions of m assive plat es form ing t he
Ear t h's crust . When t w o plat es collide, t he st ronger one slides
under t he ot her , t he one on t he t op bends and form s height s
and m ount ains. The layer beneat h proceeds under t he gr ound

st r uct ure.
I n a ver se, t his role of t he m ount ains is point ed out by a
com parison w it h " pegs" :
I n a scient ific t ext , t he st ruct ure of m ount ains is described as
follow s:
" Have We not m ade t he ear t h as a bed and t he m ount ains it s pegs?"
( The Qur 'an, 78: 6- 7)
Mount ains, in ot her wor ds, clench t he plat es in t he Ear t h's crust t oget her by ext ending
above and beneat h t he Ear t h's surface at t he conj unct ion point s of t hese plat es. I n t his

This vit al role of m ount ains, t hat w as discovered by m oder n geology and seism ic
resear ch, w as revealed in t he Qur 'an cent uries ago as an exam ple of t he suprem e
w isdom in God's creat ion.
" We placed firm ly em bedded m ount ains on t he ear t h, so it w ould not m ove under

( The Qur 'an, 21: 31)
The M ove m e nt of M ount a ins
I n one verse, we ar e infor m ed t hat m ount ains are not m ot ionless as t hey seem , but
ar e in const ant m ot ion.
" You w ill see t he m ount ains you reckoned t o be solid going past like clouds."
( The Qur 'an, 27: 88)
This m ot ion of t he m ount ains is caused by t he m ovem ent of t he Ear t h's crust t hat t hey
ar e locat ed on. The Ear t h's crust 'float s' over t he m ant le layer , w hich is denser . I t was
at t he beginning of t he 20t h cent ury when, for t he fir st t im e in hist or y, a Germ an
scient ist by t he nam e of Alfred Wegener pr oposed t hat t he cont inent s of t he ear t h had
been at t ached t oget her when it fir st form ed, but t hen drift ed in differ ent dir ect ions,
and t hus separat ed as t hey m oved away from each ot her.
Geologist s under st ood t hat t hat Wegener w as r ight only in t he 1980s, 50 years aft er
his deat h. As Wegener point ed out in an art icle published in 1915, t he land m asses on
t he ear t h w ere j oined t oget her about 500 m illion year s ago. As Wegener point ed out in
a 1915 ar t icle, t he land m asses of t he ear t h w ere j oined t oget her som e 500 m illion
years ago, and t his large m ass, called Pangaea , w as locat ed in t he Sout h Pole.
Appr oxim at ely 180 m illion year s ago, Pangaea divided int o t wo par t s, w hich drift ed in
different direct ions. One of t hese giant cont inent s w as Gondwana , w hich included
Africa, Aust r alia, Ant ar ct ica and I ndia. The second one was Laurasia , w hich included
Eur ope, Nor t h Am erica and Asia, except for I ndia. Over t he next 150 m illion year s
follow ing t his separat ion, Gondwana and Laurasia divided int o sm aller par t s.
These cont inent s t hat em er ged aft er t he split of Pangaea have been const ant ly m oving
on t he Eart h's sur face at sever al cent im et r es per year , in t he m eant im e changing t he
sea and land r at ios of t he Ear t h.
Discover ed as a r esult of t he geological r esearch carr ied out at t he beginning of t he
20t h cent ur y, t his m ovem ent of t he Eart h's cr ust is explained by scient ist s as follows:
The crust and t he upper m ost part of t he m ant le, wit h a t hickness of about 100 km s.,
ar e divided int o segm ent s called plat es. Ther e ar e six m aj or plat es, and sever al sm all
ones. According t o t he t heory called plat e t ect onics, t hese plat es m ove about on Ear t h,

car r ying cont inent s and ocean floor w it h t hem . Cont inent al m ot ion has been m easured
at fr om 1- 5 cm per year . As t he plat es cont inue t o m ove about , t his w ill pr oduce a
slow change in Eart h's geography. Each year, for inst ance, t he At lant ic Ocean becom es
slight ly w ider .( 6)
There is a very im port ant point t o be st at ed her e: God has r eferr ed t o t he m ot ion of
m ount ains as a dr ift ing act ion in t he verse. Today, m oder n scient ist s also use t he t erm
" Cont ine nt a l D r if t " for t his m ot ion. ( 7)
Unquest ionably, it is one of t he m iracles of t he Qur'an t hat t his scient ific fact , w hich
has recent ly been discover ed by science, w as announced in t he Qur'an.
The M ir a cle in t he I r on
I r on is one of t he elem ent s highlight ed in t he Qur 'an. I n Sur a Hadid, m eaning I ron, we
ar e inform ed:
" And We sent dow n iron in w hich t her e lies great force and w hich has m any uses for
m ankind...."
( The Qur 'an, 57: 25)
The wor d " sent down," part icularly used for iron in t he ver se, could be t hought of
having a m et aphor ical m eaning t o explain t hat iron has been given t o benefit people.
But when w e t ake int o considerat ion t he lit er al m eaning of t he w ord, w hich is, " being
physically sent dow n from t he sky" , we realize t hat t his ver se im plies a very significant
scient ific m iracle.
This is because m odern ast ronom ical findings
have disclosed t hat t he iron found in our w orld
has com e from t he giant st ars in out er space.
The heavy m et als in t he univer se are produced in
t he nuclei of big st ar s. Our solar syst em ,
however, does not possess a suit able st r uct ure for
pr oducing ir on on it s own. I ron can only be
pr oduced in m uch bigger st ar s t han t he Sun,
w here t he t em perat ur e r eaches a few hundr ed
m illion degr ees. When t he am ount of ir on exceeds
I r on ingot
a cer t ain level in a st ar, t he st ar can no longer
accom m odat e it , and event ually it explodes in what is called a " nova" or a
" supernova" . As a r esult of t his explosion, m et eor s cont aining ir on ar e scat t ered
ar ound t he univer se, and t hey m ove t hrough t he void unt il at t r act ed by t he
gr avit at ional force of a celest ial body.
All t his shows t hat iron did not for m on t he Ear t h, but w as car ried fr om exploding st ar s
in space via m et eors, and w as " se nt dow n t o e a r t h " , in exact ly t he sam e w ay as
st at ed in t he ver se: I t is clear t hat t his fact could not have been scient ifically know n in
t he 7t h cent ury, when t he Qur'an was r evealed.
The Pa ir s in Cr e a t ion
Glor y be t o Him Who creat ed all t he pairs: fr om w hat t he ear t h produces and from
t hem selves and from t hings unknow n t o t hem ."
( The Qur'an, 37: 36)
Alt hough t he concept of ''pair '' or " couple"
com m only st ands for m ale and fem ale, t he
st at em ent of ''from t hings unknow n t o t hem '' has
w ider im plicat ions. Today, one of t he im plicat ions
of t he verse has been revealed. The Br it ish
scient ist Paul Dirac, w ho pr oposed t hat m at t er is
creat ed in pair s, w as aw ar ded t he Nobel Prize for
physics in 1933. This discovery, called ''par it '',
m aint ains t hat m at t er is pair ed w it h it s opposit e:

Today, t he r elat ivit y of t im e is a proven scient ific fact . This w as revealed by Einst ein's
t heor y of r elat ivit y at t he ear ly years of t he 20t h cent ury. Unt il t hen, people did not
know t hat t im e was a relat ive concept , and t hat it could change according t o t he
environm ent . Yet , t he gr eat scient ist Alber t Einst ein openly pr oved t his fact w it h t he

Wit h one except ion t hough; t he Qur 'an included infor m at ion about t im e's being
relat ive! Som e ver ses about t he subj ect read:
" The y a sk you t o ha st e n t he pu nishm e nt . God w ill n ot br e a k H is pr om ise . A

( The Qur 'an, 23: 12)
The fact t hat t he relat ivit y of t im e is so clear ly m ent ioned in t he Qur'an, which st art ed
t o be r evealed in 610, is anot her evidence t hat it is a holy book.
The Pr opor t ion of Ra in
One of t he it em s of infor m at ion given in t he Qur'an about rain is t hat it is sent dow n t o
Ear t h in due m easur e. This is m ent ioned in Sur a Zukhr uf as follow s;
" I t is He w ho sends dow n wat er in due m easur e from t he sky by which We br ing a
dead land back t o life. That is how you t oo w ill be r aised ( from t he dead) ."
( The Qur 'an, 43: 11)
This m easur ed quant it y in r ain has again been
discover ed by m odern resear ch. I t is est im at ed
t hat in one second, approxim at ely 16 m illion
t ons of wat er evaporat es fr om t he Eart h. This
figur e am ount s t o 513 t rillion t ons of w at er in
one year. This num ber is equal t o t he am ount of
rain t hat falls on t he Ear t h in a year . This
m eans t hat w at er cont inuously circulat es in a
balanced cycle, in a " m easur e" . Life on Eart h
depends on t his w at er cycle. Even if people
used all t he available t echnology in t he w orld,
t hey w ould not be able t o repr oduce t his cycle
ar t ificially.
Even a m inor deviat ion in t his equilibrium would ver y soon give rise t o a m aj or
ecological im balance t hat would br ing about t he end of life on Ear t h. Yet , t his never
happens, and rain keeps falling ever y year in exact ly t he sam e quant it y j ust as
revealed in t he Qur'an.

How rain for m s r em ained a gr eat m yst er y for a long t im e. Only aft er weat her r adar
w as invent ed was it possible t o discover t he st ages by w hich r ain is for m ed.
Accor ding t o t his, t he form at ion of rain t akes place in t hr ee st ages. First , t he "r aw
m at er ial" of rain rises up int o t he air w it h t he wind. Lat er, clouds ar e form ed, and
finally raindrops appear.
The Qur 'an's account of t he for m at ion of rain refers exact ly t o t his process. I n one
ver se, t his form at ion is descr ibed in t his w ay:
" I t is God Who sends t he w inds which st ir up clouds w hich He spr eads about t he sky
however He wills. He form s t hem int o dar k clum ps and you see t he r ain com e pour ing
out from t he m iddle of t hem . When He m akes it fall on t hose of His slaves He w ills,
t hey r ej oice"
( The Qur 'an, 30: 48)
Now, let us exam ine t hese t hr ee st ages out lined in t he verse m or e t echnically.
FI RST STAGE: " I t is God Who sends t he winds..."
Count less air bubbles form ed by t he foam ing of t he oceans cont inuously bur st and
cause wat er part icles t o be ej ect ed t ow ar ds t he sky. These part icles, w hich ar e r ich in
salt , are t hen carr ied away by w inds and rise upward in t he at m ospher e. These
part icles, w hich are called aerosols, funct ion as wat er t r aps, and form cloud dr ops by
collect ing around t he wat er vapour t hem selves, which r ises fr om t he seas as t iny
dr oplet s.
SECOND STAGE: " .... w hich st ir up clouds which He spreads about t he sky however He
w ills. He form s t hem int o dar k clum ps..."
The clouds ar e form ed fr om wat er vapour t hat condenses around t he salt cryst als or
dust part icles in t he air . Because t he w at er droplet s in t hese clouds ar e ver y sm all
( w it h a diam et er bet ween 0.01 and 0.02 m m ) , t he clouds are suspended in t he air ,
and spread across t he sky. Thus, t he sky is cover ed in clouds.

Scient ist s have recent ly discovered t hat t her e are int ernal w aves, which " occur on

The inform at ion given in t he Qur 'an about ancient Egypt r eveals m any hist or ical fact s
t hat had rem ained undisclosed unt il recent t im es. These fact s also indicat e t o us t hat
ever y w ord in t he Qur 'an has been r evealed by sur e w isdom .
Ham an is a charact er w hose nam e is m ent ioned in t he Qur'an, along w it h t he Pharaoh.
He is recor ded in six different places of t he Qur 'an as one of t he closest m en t o t he
Pharaoh.
Surprisingly t he nam e of Ham an is never m ent ioned in t hose sect ions of t he Tor ah
per t aining t o t he life of Moses. However, t he m ent ion of Ham an can be found in t he
last chapt ers of t he Old Test am ent as t he helper of a Babylonian king w ho inflict ed
m any cruelt ies on t he I sraelit es appr oxim at ely 1,100 years aft er Moses.
Som e non- Muslim s, who claim t hat t he
Prophet Muham m ad ( peace be upon
him ) wr ot e t he Qur 'an by copying from
t he Tor ah and t he Bible, also assert t hat
during t he pr ocess, he t ransfer red som e
of t he subj ect s r elat ed in t hese books
int o t he Qur'an incor rect ly.
The absur dit y of t hese claim s was
dem onst r at ed only aft er t he Egypt ian
hieroglyphic alphabet had been
decipher ed, appr oxim at ely 200 years
ago, and t he nam e " Ham an" discover ed
in t he ancient scr ipt s.
Before t hese discoveries, t he w r it ings
and inscr ipt ions of ancient Egypt could
not be underst ood. The language of
ancient Egypt w as hier oglyphic, w hich
survived t hrough t he ages. However,
w it h t he spr ead of Christ ianit y and ot her
cult ural influences in t he 2nd and 3rd
cent uries AD, Egypt forsook it s ancient
beliefs as well as hieroglyphic w rit ing.
The last known exam ple of t he use of
hieroglyphic w r it ing was an inscript ion
dat ed 394 AD. Then t hat language w as
for got t en, leaving nobody who could
read and under st and it . And t hat was

w as w r it t en in t hr ee differ ent form s of w rit ing: Hier oglyphics, dem ot ic ( a sim plified
for m of ancient Egypt ian hier at ic wr it ing) and Greek. Wit h t he help of t he Gr eek script ,
t he ancient Egypt ian wr it ings w er e decoded. The t r anslat ion of t he inscript ion was
com plet ed by a Fr enchm an nam ed Jean- Fr anoise Cham pollion. Hence a for got t en
language and t he event s relat ed in it wer e br ought t o light . I n t his way, a great deal of
knowledge about t he civilizat ion, r eligion and social life of ancient Egypt becam e
available.
Thr ough t he decoding of hier oglyph, an im port ant piece of know ledge was r evealed:
t he nam e "Ham an" w as indeed m ent ioned in Egypt ian inscript ions. This nam e w as
refer red t o in a m onum ent in t he Hof Museum in Vienna.( 22)
I n t he dict ionar y of People in t he New Kingdom , t hat was pr epared based on t he ent ire
collect ion of inscript ions, Ham an is said t o be " t he head of st one quarr y w orker s" .( 23)
The result revealed a very im port ant t r ut h. Unlike t he false assert ion of t he opponent s
of t he Qur 'an, Ham an w as a per son who lived in Egypt at t he t im e of Moses, w ho had
been close t o t he Pharaoh, and had been involved in const r uct ion wor k, j ust as
im part ed in t he Qur'an.
Fur t her m ore, t he verse in t he Qur 'an descr ibing t he event w here t he Phar aoh asked
Ham an t o build a t ow er is in per fect agr eem ent w it h t his archaeological finding:
" Pharaoh said, 'Council, I do not know of any ot her god for you apar t fr om Me. Ham an,
kindle a fir e for m e over t he clay and build m e a loft y t ower so t hat perhaps I m ay be
able t o clim b up t o Moses' god! I consider him a blat ant liar .'"
( The Qur 'an, 28: 38)
I n conclusion, t he exist ence of t he nam e Ham an in t he ancient Egypt ian inscr ipt ions
not only r endered t he fabr icat ed claim s of t he opponent s of t he Qur 'an wor t hless, but
also confirm ed one m ore t im e t he fact t hat t he Qur 'an com es fr om God. I n a
m ir aculous w ay, t he Qur 'an conveys t o us hist orical infor m at ion t hat could not have
been possessed or underst ood at t he t im e of t he Pr ophet .
Tit le s of Egypt ia n Rule r s in t he Qur 'a n
Moses was not t he only pr ophet w ho lived in t he lands of Egypt in t he hist ory of
ancient Egypt . The Prophet Joseph had lived in Egypt long before t he t im e of Moses.
We encount er a cert ain parallel w hile reading about t he st ories of Moses and Joseph.
While addr essing t he Egypt ian r uler at t he t im e of Joseph, t he w ork " m alik" ( t he King)
is used in t he Qur 'an:
" The King ( m alik) said, 'Br ing him ( Joseph) t o m e st r aight aw ay! so I m ay draw him
ver y close t o m e.' When he had spoken w it h him , he declar ed, 'Today you ar e t r ust ed,
est ablished in our sight .'"
( The Qur 'an, 12: 54)
I n cont r ast , t he r uler at Moses' t im e is r eferr ed t o as t he " Pharaoh":
" We gave Moses nine Clear Signs. Ask t he t ribe of I srael about w hen he cam e t o t hem
and Pharaoh said t o him , 'Moses, I t hink you ar e bew it ched.'"
( The Qur 'an, 17: 101)
Hist orical r ecords available t oday show us t he r eason
for t he differ ent nom enclat ure of t hese r uler s. The
wor d " phar aoh" w as originally t he nam e given t o t he
royal palace in ancient Egypt . The ruler s of t he old
dynast y did not use t he t it le. The use of t he w ord
phar aoh as t he t it le of t he ruler did not st ar t unt il t he
"New Kingdom " era of Egypt ian hist or y. This period
st ar t ed wit h t he 18t h dynast y ( 1539- 1292 BC) , and by
t he 20t h dynast y ( 945- 730 BC) t he w ord " pharaoh"
was adopt ed as t it le of respect .
Ther efor e t he m ir aculous nat ur e of t he Qur'an is
m anifest ed her e once again: Joseph lived at t he t im e of
t he Old Kingdom , and hence t he w or d " m alik" was used
for t he Egypt ian ruler r at her t han " pharaoh". On t he
