AbstractA novel compact four bands antenna with

coplanar waveguide feed is proposed for satisfying GSM, WLAN
and WIMAX. Based on the triangle planar patch element, two
different slots were embedded. The simulation of the antenna is
performed by using software Ansoft HFSS and the results
present that the number of multiband, the central of frequency
and bandwidth can be controlled by the dimensions of the slots,
as well as the size of the rectangle patch. Finally, A multi-band
patch antenna with bands (1.69~1.85GHz, 2.2~2.96GHz,
3.39~3.84GHz, 5.14~7.28GHz) has been designed, through
measurement.

Numerous advantages have been obtained by feeding a

radiating element with coplanar waveguide feeds such as lower
radiation leakage and less dispersion than micro-strip lines.
This type of structure has been modeled as a radiating element
and is referred to as a CPW-fed slot line monopole antenna.
[10-13].
In this paper, A novel compact multiband design of the
printed planar antenna with a miniature profile was presented,
which is constructed by a triangle patch element embedded
with double slots. The proposed antenna typically provides
four main operating bands and is capable of multi-frequency
operations, [17]covering the GSM1800 and the IEEE 802.11
WLAN standard in the 2.45GHz, 5.2GHz and 5.8GHz, and the
WIMAX system operates at the frequency bands of 3.5GHz
and 5.5GHz, simultaneously. The model of the proposed
antenna has been designed, constructed and details of both the
simulation and measured antenna performance. [17]

INTRODUCTION

Wireless communications have evolved at an astonishing

rate during the last decade. In the rapid changing world the
wireless communication system multi-bands antennas play a
vital role for wireless service requirements. Wireless local area
network (WLAN) and Worldwide Interoperability for
Microwave Access (WIMAX) have been widely used in
mobile devices such as laptops, handheld computers and
mobile phones [1][13]. This multi-bands antenna has been
widely considered as a reliable, cost-effective, and high speed
data connectivity which enables user mobility. [13] However,
the difficulty of antenna design increases when the number of
operating frequency bands increases. In addition, for
miniaturizing the wireless communication systems, the
antenna must also be small enough to be placed inside the
system. Recently, various types of printed antennas have been
studied to meet the increasing trend for multi-band antennas [2,
3, 15], and several techniques for size reduction and bandwidth
enhancement have been applied [4-7, 15]. For the size
reduction [4,5,6,15],the main miniaturizing techniques are
used to loading the antenna with lumped, with conductors or
high dielectric materials; using ground planes and short
circuits; optimizing the geometry; and using the antenna
environment to reinforce radiation; whereas, several
techniques [4, 6, 7, 15], such as using substrate of low
permittivity, or of high thickness; mounting reactive loading;
use of coupled resonators, and parasitic elements; feeding from
rear slot, or feeding by coplanar feeding line, have been
developed as bandwidth enhancement techniques.[15]

The geometry of the proposed CPW-fed triangle patch with

two slot antenna for four-band antenna operation is shown in
Figure 1. For the design means, the antenna is etched on a side
of a low-cost FR4 substrate with dielectric constant of 4.4 ( r )
and substrate thickness of 1.5mm and has a single-layer
metallic structure, whereas the other side is without any
metallization.

Using microwave applications, slot-patch antennas fed by

CPW lines are receiving increasingly attention [8, 9, 13].

The basis of the antenna structure is chosen to be a triangle

patch element with two slots (ladder-shaped slot at the centre
of the triangle patch and parallel groove at the top of the
triangle patch) and with a vertical distance of 1.5 mm away
from the ground plane. Two ground planes with the same
dimensions of length Lg and width Wg, are located
symmetrically on each side of the CPW feeding line. The
CPW feeding line designed with a signal strip length Lg and
width Wf and a horizontal gap distance of 1mm between the
coplanar ground plan and the centre feeding line is used for
exciting the radiation patch element.

be attributed to the effect of the SMA connector and

fabrication imperfections, but the measured results correspond
very well with those from the simulation. Figure5 shows the
photographs of the fabricated antenna.
In addition, we have simulated the radiation performance
of the proposed antenna. Figure6 plots the simulated radiation
patterns at 1.8, 2.45, 3.5GHz, respectively. It can be seen that
the radiation patterns are approximately omnidirectional in all
operation bands.

To more investigate the performance of proposed antenna

configuration in terms of achieving four bands, a available
simulation software of Ansoft HFSS was used for the required
numerical analysis and to obtain the proper geometrical
parameters in Figure 1. The final optimized dimensions of
proposed antenna are length of the rectangular substrate
Ls=47mm, width of the rectangular substrate Ws=44mm,
length of the finite ground planes Lg=20mm, width of the
finite ground planes Wg=19mm. Length of the feeding is
20mm and feed width is 4mm. To test the proposed design, the
geometries in Figure 1 developed through some repeatedly
simulations. Finally, the other proper
parameters of the
radiation patch element for the proposed configuration were
obtained to be H1=6mm, H2=23mm, H3=12.9mm, H4=4mm,
S=1mm, S1=1.5mm, L=25.9mm, where Wf corresponds to the
50 micro-strip line.

RESURES AND DISCUSSION

For the purpose of describing the design idea procedure,

Figure2 shows the evolution of the proposed antenna.
Antenna1 shows a monopole printed antenna with isosceles
triangle radiator. The surface currents mainly distribute in the
two equilateral sides and the antenna can achieve a dual-band.
Moreover, the operating frequency is decided by the
distribution of the antenna surface currents, if the distribution
changed or interfered, antenna operating frequency will also be
changed simultaneously. Adding slots on the isosceles triangle
antenna is the most easily way to realize the redistribution of
the surface currents.[16] Based on the design idea above, slots
are loaded on the two equilateral sides and the centra of the
isosceles triangle antenna as the Antenna2, Antenna3 and
Antenna4 shows.

In order to show the difference performance of four

antennas, the simulations results of the return loss of the
corresponding antenna are depicted in Figure3. It is seen that
the Antenna1 and the Antenna2 with a ladder-slot only can
provide two resonant modes at the 2.4GHz and 5.8GHz. As it
is shown, the 10dB impedance bands are clearly added at
3.5GHz by the rectangle. It is also seen that the Antenna3
without the parallel-groove only can provide three good
resonant modes at the 2.4GHz, 3.5GHz and 5.8GHz. However,
for the case with a parallel-groove, four separate broadband
resonant modes are clearly excited at 1.8GHz, 2.4GHz 3.5GHz
and 5.8GHz simultaneously with a good matching condition.

CONCLUSION

A compact CPW-fed multiband micro-strip patch antenna

has been designed, fabricated and successfully implemented
with experimental and simulate results. The proposed antenna
can provide sufficient impedance bandwidth and also excellent
radiation patterns. Omni-directional radiation performance and
sufficient gain of operating frequencies can also be
obtained.[14] In addition, measurements of the fabricated
prototypes showed correspond very well with the simulation
data result, and the obvious effects of changing the slots
dimensions parameters on the antenna resonant frequencies
and impedance bandwidths have also been modification.
