ELECTRONIC ENERGY METER WITH INSTANT BILLING

Introduction:
With the passage of time, technology has merged itself with the daily life of humans. We
have seen so much progress in the field of science and technology but we are not able to make
full use of it. One such area for improvement is the Electricity board billing system. Our existing
electricity board billing system in India is obsolete and time consuming. We are proposing a
system through which electricity billing becomes fully automated and communication is made
possible via GSM networks.
In EB meters there are two types, analog meters and digital meters. The analog meters are
mostly used in olden days. These meter readings are calculated under the basis of the number of
rotation made by the rotating disc. The digital meter is the mostly used EB meters now a day.
This meter works on the basis of the flash made by the LED and according to that the reading are
calculated. In our system the central EB office has immediate access to all consumer homes in a
locality with the help of GSM system. The EB meter present in each house is connected by
wireless network with the EB office.

Existing System:
The existing manual system in India has major drawbacks. This system is prone to errors
and can also be easily manipulated. The prevailing manual system also requires lot of human
workforce. The major disadvantage in this system is that the meter cannot be accessed by the
meter reader if the customer is not present at home.

Proposed System:
In the proposed system, we have three sections. One is home section that contains the EB
meter, microcontroller, LCD, load tripping relay. In this the consumed powers are received
through the IR receiver from the EB meter for controller processing. When the controller reads
the units, it displays the values and the amount to be paid in the LCD. It is interfaced with GSM
modem for enquiry process.
Other is the EB section. It contains PC with .Net as frontend and a GSM modem also. EB
section can send message to the consumer home for unit up gradation. Other is the user section.
It contains a GSM mobile. The user may send and receive message through it.
First the user needs to access the EB section for EB power. Then the EB section will send
a message to the consumer home with unique ID to recharge some amount of units. The EB
meter will be recharged and keep on providing power to the Home. The unit gets reduced

according to the usage, if the EB meter reading reaches below 5 units. It sends a warning
message to the user about its EB power to be tripped off. Then the user needs to recharge again
in order to get uninterrupted power supply. Then EB section procedure will be continued, if he
didnt recharge the EB meter. The Power supply will be tripped off immediately. Intermediately
the user may send a request message to the home section to enquire about its EB unit utilized and
amount costs.
