Year Two

January 2015
Dear Parents/Carers,
The year 2 team thought you may find it helpful to know about what we are planning to
teach this half term and some of our learning objectives with ideas of how you can help
you child at home.

Numeracy

Literacy

We will continue to consolidate the

children's knowledge in addition and
subtraction; understanding that addition
can be done in any order and choosing the
best way depending on the numbers. The
children will also be learning about odd
and even numbers, multiplication and
division, place value, shapes and
measures.

The children will continue to develop their

writing skills. We expect your child to
continue to use exciting vocabulary,
connective, openers and punctuation. The
children will be writing stories, poems and
information about two important women
in History: Florence
Nightingale and Mary
Seacole.

Science

History

In science we will be learning about

Animals and their Habitats. You could
support us by helping your child to
understand the difference between living
and non-living things and, talking about
where animals live. It would also be
helpful if your child find out more about
Forces by using the internet or reference
books in the library.

In history, we will be learning about Mary

Seacole and Florence Nightingale. We will
be talking about timelines and how their
actions changed nursing today. It would
also be helpful if you could support your
child with finding information about
nursing and hospitals today.

Design and Technology

P.E.

In DT, we will be looking at Patterns and

the children will have the opportunity to
design Josephs coat of many colours. It
would be helpful if you could discuss
patterns with your child
and together find out
more about the story of
Joseph.

Remember your child is taught PE every

week and needs to have a full kit in
school. PE days are:
Owls - Monday
Penguins - Thursday
Ducks - Thursday
Macaws - Friday

Cooking

It would also be helpful if:

Throughout the year, your child will have

the opportunity to do cooking. In order for
these sessions to take place we would like
you to make a voluntary contribution of
only 1. The money will go towards the
cost of purchasing resources.
Please give your donation to the class
teacher.

You make time to share a book with

your child every day

Help your child to learn her/his key

words by playing games such as pairs,
snap, looking for the words in books,
displaying them around your home
etc.

Return the maths game permission

slip (if you havent already done so).
The games are a fun way of helping
your child to further develop maths
skills.

We will be teaching aspects of ICT, Music, RE and PSHE as the term progresses. Our
planning is linked across the curriculum and most subjects will be taught alongside each
other.

This half term, we will be running a numeracy workshop to help you to understand how
maths is taught in year 2. A letter will be sent nearer the time inviting you to the school. We
hope some of these ideas will be helpful to you. If you have any questions, queries or
concerns we are always willing to talk them through with you. If we are unable to answer
your question immediately, we are always willing to make an appointment at a more
convenient time.
Thank you for your support. On behalf of the Year 2 Team.
