Foreword
This document has been prepared by Technical Experts Group of EUnited Municipal Equipment Section
Winter maintenance equipment.
This document provides additional requirements and test conditions for liquid spraying and replaces the
document version 2013-10-31.

Introduction
The manufacturers of spreading machines associated in EUnited Municipal Equipment and the Engineering
Center Bygholm in Denmark have developed an agreed test method with the main intention: One common
test procedure making spreading quality comparable and providing repeatability and reliability,
independent from road and weather conditions.
When spreading thawing agents such as salt or brine on traffic roads, the aim is always:
To apply as much thawing agent as necessary in order to ensure the safety of road traffic under the
current weather conditions, but also to minimize the amount of thawing agent in order to limit the
environmental impact and to reduce the costs.
Therefore, it is a common interest of manufacturers and users to operate spreading machines - also referred
to as spreaders or gritters - in such way, that a homogeneous distribution of spreading material is achieved
within the set spreading dosage, width and spreading pattern track.

Since this distribution performance is the most important quality feature of a spreading machine,
manufacturers and users have created their own test procedures separately from each other in order to obtain
information about the distribution quality. This has resulted in a high variety of different test methods all over
Europe. Later on European experts - manufacturers and users - started at CEN to work out a common test
procedure for verifying the distribution quality of spreaders in a European Standard.

As a first result, EN 15597-1 has been published defining a static test method to verify the accuracy of set
spreading dosages of thawing material brought out with a spreader in a defined time period.

Subsequently this CEN expert group tried to develop a common dynamic test for verifying the distribution
quality during driving and as close as possible to real operating conditions. But these experts could not agree
on standardised test conditions. Due to the different kinds of thawing materials used throughout Europe and
the lack of experience in determining the exact quantity of thawing material spread on the road, this group
decided to publish a Technical Specification instead of a European Standard. This has led to the situation that
all operators choose different methods to determine the precision of the spreading pattern. Until today the test
methods have not been specified in detail. The new EUnited spreader performance test is a new approach
towards a harmonised European test procedure.

The de-icing material shall be stored protected from atmospheric moisture agent, in order to keep the original
characteristic during storage period.
The concentration of sodium chloride in the brine for pre-wetting or liquid spraying shall be between 22 % and
23 % by weight. This analysis has to be done prior each test.
The measured results must be corrected according to the real NaCl content in the spreading material.

Certification procedure
6.1 Principle of qualification test procedure

The qualification procedure of the spreaders includes two tests types, one static and one dynamic.
The static test enables to check the right quantity of material, it is realised without moving the spreader. The
dynamic test enables to check the quality of salt spreading pattern, it is realised driving the spreader vehicle
during spreading operation on a measure area.
According to the type of spreader tested, the qualification procedure sets the functioning parameters of the
machine. These spreading parameters are different for the static and dynamic tests.
A spreader type must be qualified according to the static test before proceeding with the dynamic test.
Each spreader type, in order to be qualified, has to meet the requirements of the two tests (static and
dynamic).
During a qualification, it is only allowed to change the settings of spreading width, dosage, symmetry,
simulated speed, pre-wet on/off. In case of changing other parameters the whole test procedure has to be
restarted.

Pre-tests
It is allowed to make pre-tests in order to be able to choose and test different settings. These tests will not be
taken as qualification tests. The manufacturer has to declare clearly after the pre-tests that he wants to start
with the qualification test procedure. Then only those test runs after this declaration will count for official
qualification and the qualification test requirements become valid.

6.2 Identification and requirements on spreader types

A spreader type includes a spreader and a control box. The spreader and the control box have to be identified
in the manufacturers production (for instance: model number), and shall respect the actual European
standards.
The modification of the components influencing the spreading performances defined in Annex A involves the
definition of a new machine model, a new procedure of qualification shall be realised for this new model.

6.3 Procedure of the static test

The static test consists to qualify, with weighing, the right quantity of test material delivered by the conveying
system. It is realised without moving the spreader/sprayer, consequently vehicle speeds have to be simulated
by its control box (EN 15597-1 standard).

For the spreaders/sprayers having an auxiliary engine, the manufacturers advices shall be
respected;

for the spreaders/sprayers driven by the vehicle hydraulics, the EN 15431 standard will be applied
(respect of the engine nominal speed);

for the spreaders/sprayers driven by the pump mounted on wheel, an independent system will have
to ensure the pump rotation at the speed needed by the test;

for the spreaders/sprayers driven by the pump flanged on a vehicle wheel, an independent system
will have to ensure the pump rotation needed by the test, applying a theoretical diameter of the
vehicle tyre of 1m.

For the machines working with pre-wetted salt, the tests shall be done collecting two media separately
(disconnection of injection pipes of the brine maintaining the same flow conditions as during the dynamic test).
For machines working with liquid the test shall be done by collecting liquid of the spraying devices (e.g.
nozzles) related to the spraying width.
The requirements on the methods and equipment are described in 6.3.2.
6.3.1

Description of the static qualification test per spreader/sprayer type

*Test No. 1 needs not to be repeated if one and the same sprayer is tested as Type B1 & B2 or C1 & C2
without any changes in settings and parameters.

For spreader types with option spreading pre-wetted salt the test must be conducted with dry salt and prewetted salt. The tests with pre-wetted salt will be realized with a standard ratio of 30 % liquid and 70% solid,
respecting the standard EN 15597-1.

When each dynamic test is finished the hopper and/or tank shall be loaded more than 1/3.

14

The dynamic test shall be done with symmetric and asymmetric spreading/spraying pattern as described in
the Tables 4a, 4band 4c.

6.4.2

Dynamic test method

The test shall be done indoor on a test area surface simulating an asphalted road.
The test area must be flat with a slope less than 0.5% determined over its overall dimensions. No obstacles
must be present in test area. Differences in height between two collateral panels must not exceed 3 mm.
Panels shall be laid without gaps exceeding 3 mm.
A test area of minimum 17,5 m length must be available. The test area includes a collecting area having a
length of 2,5 m and a width identical to maximum tested working width plus an outer stripe with a width of 1 m
at each lateral side. In front and after the test area there must be a driving area in which the vehicle drives
with same constant speed as through the measurement area. In front and behind the collection area there
must be sufficient area for acceleration and deceleration

The passage for the truck with spreader/sprayer has to be 3m wide, to enable the vehicle to drive not in a
central position related to the measuring area. A maximum deviation respecting the central position of 100
mm must be ensured otherwise the test run has to be repeated.
Real vehicle speed as given in Tables 4a, 4b and 4c must not deviate by 15 % otherwise the test run has to
be repeated.
Two barriers with a height not less than 30 cm and a length of 2,5 m shall be provided on each side from the
collecting area.
During each test the following conditions shall be observed for test operations and indicated in the test report:
the air temperature shall be between 5C and 30 C;
air humidity.

6.4.2.1 Test area conditions

The test area, acceleration area and deceleration area shall be cleaned and moistened before each test run.
Cleaning of the test area with flushing water
Cleaning of the acceleration and deceleration areas: visibly clean

6.4.2.2 Detailed description of the test method

The system used to verify the salt quantity shall be able to determine at least the 95% of the salt present on
the measurement areas and not more than 100 %. The 95 % recovery shall be determined of the pure content
of the sample.
The recovery rate of the measuring system shall be verified for each different kind of spreading material prior
to each test session. See Annex D.

6.4.2.3 Qualification requirements of the dynamic test with solid, pre-wetted and liquid thawing media
The spreading/spraying pattern shall respect the following tolerances with specified kinds of salt
and/or liquid:

Table 7 Spreading/spraying tolerances on dynamic test with solid, prewetted and liquid thawing
material

The effective average dosage in outer strips together <= 80% of the effective dosage with spreading/spraying
width up to 8m
The effective average dosage in outer strips together <= 100% of the effective dosage with
spreading/spraying width exceeding 8m
Each first and last strip inside of a measurement area shall have an effective average dosage in a strip of >=
50% of the effective dosage
All others strips inside of a measurement area shall have an effective average dosage in a strip of >= 60% of
the effective dosage.

6.4.2.4 Qualification test requirements for dynamic test

The mathematic average of the effective average dosage of two qualification test runs shall meet the
requirements to pass the test. A third test is possible if the mathematic average does not meet the
requirements. See table 7 of chapter 6.4.2.3
If three qualification test runs are done the manufacturer decides which two out of these three test runs are
used for calculation of the mathematic average.
The effective recovery rate of a qualification test run must be at least 75.0 % otherwise the qualification test
run has to be repeated. If the effective recovery rate is at least 90.0 % the qualification test run is valid. If the
effective recovery rate exceeds 75.0 % but is less than 90% the manufacturer decides whether the
qualification test run is repeated or to declare to be valid.
