Mural to beautify
Freedom Park

Crafting at Cedar Run

MAC to hold student design contest

for project along wall of park restroom
By MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun
The restroom building is not
typically thought of as the most
attractive part of municipal
parks.
However, one wall on the restroom at Freedom Park may soon
become just as beautiful as the
open fields and trees for which
the park is known.
The Medford Arts Center is
partnering with Medford Township Schools to put a mural along
the outside wall of the restroom.
The center is expected to get permission to paint the mural after
township council agreed to put together a resolution on the matter
at its Jan. 6 meeting.
Cathy Livingstone, the education director for the Medford Arts
Center, said the mural will hopefully give the arts a more visible
representation in the community.
Hopefully we raise awareness
that were trying to keep the arts
alive in Medford and also support
the Medford Arts Center, she

said.
The mural will be done
through donations and volunteer
efforts. The MAC is teaming with
Haines School and Medford Memorial Middle School to have art
students in grades six through
eight submit designs for the
mural as part of a contest.
The theme will be something
to be relative to nature and freedom, Livingstone said.
After a winner is selected later
this year, kids from across the
township will be invited to help
paint the mural. Painting is expected to begin in late June or
early July.
Livingstone emphasized the
importance of getting middle
school-aged students involved in
the project. She said the age
group is key in the MAC and the
art community in Medford if it is
to continue to grow in the future.
Weve had a hard time with
that age group trying to get them
involved in classes with the MAC
please see MAC, page 10

The Cedar Run Wildlife Refuge hosted a pair of nature classes last week teaching kids from ages 3
to 12 about different aspects of wildlife and the outdoors. Kids in last weeks class used oatmeal to
make different models of animal scat. Here, Evelyn molds the oatmeal on her plate to form scat
shown on the paper. After a couple of interactive projects, the class went on a hike along the
refuges wooded trails.

Lenape District unveils new

schedule with longer class
periods, more free time
By MIKE MONOSTRA

Increased instructional time

The Sun
The LRHSDs current schedule
features 42-minute periods where
students could potentially take up
to eight classes per day. Birnbohm said the 42-minute class period is inadequate when preparing students for college, where
they face much longer class
lengths. In addition, she said
teachers struggle to get through a
full lesson in 42 minutes.
Its a little hard to teach a
class in 42 minutes, Birnbohm
said.
The new schedule increases
each class period to 57 minutes,
adding 15 minutes of instructional time. In addition, students will
have only six classes per day. A
student will have each class three

School days in the Lenape Regional High School District wont

look the same after this year.
School officials are planning to
unveil a new class schedule district-wide for the 2015-16 school
year. The new schedule is a radical departure from the current
schedule. Gone will be 42-minute
classes and 13 periods per day.
Coming in will be a simpler format with 57-minute classes, six
periods and a new lunch format.
All changes are being made
with the intention of improving
student learning, decreasing student stress and making the school
day more efficient.
There are going to be major
benefits for our students, Superintendent Carol Birnbohm said.

times in a four-day rotating
schedule.
The district is not increasing
the length of the school day. The
extra instruction time is taken
from less time spent in the hallway for class changes and eliminating homeroom at the beginning of the day.
Overall, students will spend
1,980 more minutes per year in
each class than they would under
the current schedule. This is
equivalent to five extra school
days of instruction without
adding to the school calendar.
This all works within the footprint of our school day, Birnbohm said.

Community Lunch and Learn

Perhaps the biggest change
with the new schedule is the Community Lunch and Learn. The en-

tire school will have a 50-minute

lunch period sandwiched directly
in the middle of the school day.
Right now, students are divided
into five different lunch periods.
Its all of the kids having
lunch at the same time in the
building, Birnbohm said. Its a
great time in the middle of the
day to refresh and refuel.
In the Community Lunch and
Learn, students will be given the
freedom to use the time to do
what they want. They can eat
lunch, get extra help from a
teacher, go to a club meeting, get
homework done or just spend
time with friends.
Birnbohm described the new
format as a privilege, saying the
students will have to make responsible decisions in the same
way they will have to in college.
We want this to be studentdriven, she said.
Each school will open spaces
where students can congregate
for each lunch. In addition to the
cafeteria, students will be able to

go to the media center, gym, classrooms designated as study areas

and other places.
At Shawnee High School, principal Matthew Campbell said
they have identified enough space
to accommodate nearly 2,000 students, a much larger number
than their student body of just
less than 1,500.
Were going to have plenty of
places for students to eat, Campbell said.
In addition, the schools will
have food kiosks set up in the
hallways where students can purchase lunch. This will give them
an alternative to purchasing
lunch in the cafeteria.
The changes wont be a dramatic departure for all schools.
Seneca High School already allows students to eat and study in
the media center during lunch period.
All lunch periods will be supervised. Teachers will be assigned

school on a rotating schedule.

How to build a better schedule

The new schedule was not
drawn up overnight. The process
began almost two years ago in the
spring of 2013, when a committee
was formed to examine the schedule and how it could be improved.
Birnbohm said the current
schedule was flawed in a number
of ways. In addition to less instruction time, the 13-period format created course conflicts. In
addition, students spent a lot of
time traveling from class to class.
The district came up with the
new schedule after examining
schedules from other schools similar to the Lenape district. Teachers, students, administrators and
support staff visited high schools
such as Ocean City, Mainland,

Kingsway and Cherry Hill East

and West to see their schedules in
action and talk to the school communities about what they
thought of their school days.
Birnbohm said elements from
these schools and others were
combined to form the new schedule. The schedule is very similar
to the one used at Chatham High
School in North Jersey. NJ
Monthly ranked Chatham as New
Jerseys No. 1 high school last
year, and Birnbohm believes the
Lenape district schools are capable of doing the same.
We want to always try to constantly improve, she said.

Parental feedback
mostly supportive
During presentations at each of
the four high schools, parents
were invited to ask questions and
give feedback about the new
schedule. Most of the feedback
was overwhelmingly positive,
with many parents saying the

schedule was a great idea.

I think its much better than
what they have now, Brendan
Oleniacz said. The lunch periods
will work much better.
Shawnee parent Sherrie Lodge
also felt the lunch format would
be a large improvement, as students will get more free time and
more freedom.
Its going to be a nice privilege
for the students, she said.
Another parent, David Deming, was happy to hear about the
increased instructional time and
fewer classes per day.
I think this is a great plan, he
said. I think its going to be more
of a stress-less environment to go
to school in.
One concern parents did have
revolved around homework. Birnbohm said many students spend
at least a couple hours a night on
homework right now. With longer
class periods, some parents
feared teachers would also inplease see DISCIPLINE, page 7

chool budgets are on the horizon

time when residents had a direct way to give their input to the
budget, by voting yay or nay for
its passage. That opportunity has, for
the most part, been removed in our
state, but it doesnt mean you cant,
and shouldnt, be involved in the
process.
The toughest job in New Jersey

Whether you support Gov. Christies

the last few years.

no other option.
Across the state, almost all school
districts will be doing less with less.
But did your board cut enough from
the budget? Too much? Do you agree
with the tax rate? Do you think it
should have been higher to provide
more services? What are your ideas

Whatever the budget situation

We invite you to write letters to the

Keystone XL Pipeline
should be built, writer says
The debate on the Keystone XL Pipeline
has come to define the difference between
common sense and lack thereof.
Almost 70 percent of Americans want to
see the pipeline built. The president's arguments for refusing to approve it are sounding more and more hollow.
The president's arguments go like
this:
Most of the 30,000-40,000 jobs that the
pipeline will generate are temporary, and
will disappear once the pipeline has been
completed.
The pipeline will deepen U.S. depend-

ence on fossil fuel.

The current lower cost of oil has reduced the economic benefits of the
pipeline.
Mr. President, really?
About the first argument, all infrastructure jobs are, by nature, temporary. Once
the project has been completed, most, if
not all, of the jobs go away. The pipeline is
no exception. Also, how many jobs today
are really permanent? If you are in doubt,
just ask someone who used to work at Circuit City or at Blockbuster Video.
I'm sure the president understands that!
The pipeline will not make us more or
less dependent on fossil fuel, nor will it accelerate or decelerate the development of
renewable sources. As long as there is a de-

mand for fossil fuel, one way or the other,

the Canadian oil will find a way to market.
I'm sure the president understands that!
The president is correct in arguing that
lower oil prices make the pipeline less economically beneficial. However, at some
point, the price of oil will go back up. It always has and always will.
I'm sure the president understands that!
Whether from Canada, or from anywhere else, it's safer, cheaper and less damaging to the environment to transfer oil by
pipeline than by any other means, like by
truck, rail or fuel tanker.
I'm sure the president understands that!
Seventy percent of Americans get it.
So what are we waiting for?

the amount of content taught, but
to better reinforce it. She said the
amount of work for students

We certainly dont want our

teachers doubling up on homework, Birnbohm said.

The district also plans to address concerns about students
who may misbehave during the

School officials dont believe

and even volunteering as well,

Livingstone said. I hope itll encourage kids to come out and do
more.
Livingstone believes the mural
will be more than just a painting
for students. She feels through
the process, there are a lot of lessons students will be able to
learn.
Its not only learning about
art, but its also teamwork and
learning how to facilitate a plan,
Livingstone said. Theres a lot of
finer points these youngsters are
going to learn.
To raise money for supplies
and support, the MAC is planning
to launch a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo.com. The center is also hoping to garner interest from local businesses.
Itd be great to have a sponsor

for the materials to paint the

mural, Livingstone said. Itd be
great to have a sponsor donate

Medford Council is expected to
pass a resolution at an upcoming
meeting officially granting the
MAC use of the restroom building for the mural. Council said it
was in support of the idea as long
as the subject matter of the mural
was consistent with community
values.
I thought it was a really great
idea, Mayor Chuck Watson said.
It seemed like it was well
thought out and well planned

Livingstone hopes the mural
will be a project Medford kids can
be proud of for years to come. She
hopes future middle school students will be able to add their own

The vision being every three

done redone by a group of young
students, Livingstone said.
