Tutor Marked Assignment 1

1) State the basic difference between an open-loop and a closed-loop control
system. You may draw diagrams to illustrate your answers. You must labell all
your diagrams correctly.

8) Figure 1 shown a temperature control system. The main purpose here is to

maintain the temperature of the hot water at the desired value. The flow rate of
the water is constant and the steam is coming from a valve. Pressure
thermometer P is used as a feedback element which sends a signal for
comparison with the set point temperature. The difference between the actual
temperature and the set point temperature (or the error) actuates the valve which
controls the rate of flow of steam and hence controlling the temperature of the
water.

Based on the description above and Figure 1, draw the block diagram of this
system. You will analyse the system and decide which elements to be included in
your block diagram. You must lable your diagram correctly.

9) For the circuit shown in Figure 2, find the voltage V 0(t) when the input voltage V(t)
= 4t2. All initial conditions are assumed to be zero.

10)Figure 3.1 shows a typical positioning control system. This system has a
potentiometer bridge with a sentivity of K p V/radian as error detector. It feeds a
d.c. amplifier with an open circuit gain K. This supplies to a field generator which
has resistance Rf and inductance Lf. Generator constant is given as K g V/A. This
is connected to an armature controlled d.c. motor with motor torque constant K T
and back e.f.f constant Kb V/radian/second. It drives a load of iniertia J and
friction f.

In your opinion, is this system a good system? Can anything be done to

improve it?
(10 marks)
Note: This is a highly subjective question and there is no right or wrong
answers. But your answer has to be logical and analytical. It serves the
purpose of gauging if you are able to provide any logical assessment to a
problem.

ii.

List down the primary functions of the antenna azimuth.

Note: This is an open ended question. You are free to give your answers.
The purpose here is to test you knowledge on general sciences. Your
answers must be based on logic and scientific facts.
