From Social Media (LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook) to Datatel

Twitter / Facebook / LinkedIn / Putting it all together

This guide aims to walk you through the process of updating information in our database based
on social media interactions.
This procedure should be used at least once a week, and will require using a spreadsheet
titled SM to Datatel.xlsx found on the server at T:University Advancement/Alumni/Alumni Office/Social media/NewFollowers.xlsx
*Note that conversations (such as in private or direct messages) should be added to CASM in the
name of the staff member engaged in that conversation.*

Once you get to the search page, start looking up those new Facebook and Twitter followers.
You may get multiple results and will need to use information from the other profiles to make
a positive match.
Once a match is established., copy all relevant information to the database where appropriate.

Putting it all together

Once youve mined all the data you could from social media profiles, time to use all that
information to update the database.
Using Datatel, search for every new name in the Followers spreadsheet.
o It can be a challenge matching the new Twitter/Facebook/LinkedIn follower to a Datatel entry.
Look at the persons bio, any links they have, graduation year, degree, last known address, etc.
can yield clues to help determine the correct person. Looking at previous posts when possible
can help as well.
Once a match is found, update home and business information as needed, including any
email addresses.
The persons social media links and handles need to be saved using the ODEM feature in
Datatel. To get there, follow these steps.

PAVI, simply type NAE in the top left, hit enter and youll be there. Next,

3. Select the proper Social Media Network from the drop down menu.
Copy the links to the appropriate profile.

When discrepancies appear, ask for updated information using the template below.
Depending on whats available, send that update request (in order of preference) by email,

Avoid using Facebook for private messages since they require going through your private account.
