CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION
A. Background of the study
Speaking skill is one of the important and essential skills that must be
practiced to communicate orally. On the contrary, for most people, speaking
is the most difficult part when learners learn a foreign language. There are
many obstacles in mastering English. For people who want to be competent
in communicating with English, learners must change and expand identity as
she or he learns the culture, social, and even political factors of English, that
needed to speak appropriately with a new voice. Besides changing and
expanding the identity, learners also need bravery and confidence to present
their English well. Bravery and self confidence are included in non linguistic
aspect which directly indicated ones self concept that can determine ones
successful or failure in speaking English.
Nowadays, although learners have learned English for years, many of
them are still incapable to use English orally. These may be caused by the
limitation of opportunity to practice, lack of vocabulary, or psychological
factors which more concern to the fear of making mistakes when speaking
English. This fear feeling comes up from the low self-concept learners have.
Someone with low self-concept is believed to be unconfident, while
confidence is needed by learners to present their English orally.
If learners always think that learners are going to be failed in speaking
English, learners will not be able to speak well. This situation shows that this

fear indicates learners have low or even negative self-concept. In other word,
it could be said that if learner has no idea about what to say, she or he may
lose confidence, feel uncomfortable, and make mistake.
In this research, the researcher is focus on speaking ability
which speaking is one of four skills. In teaching speaking, the
teacher should be able to make interesting topic and apply
suitable technique.

In teaching learning process, the teacher English sometimes

explained the materials quickly and then he and students got too serious in
teaching learning process. So, it seems students bored. Whereas, most of
students especially in junior high school are more interested in playing to
enjoy the learning process. So, it requires the teacher to be able to design
the materials in teaching learning process to make the students easy to
understand the materials and enjoy the class. It means that the teacher
should take the best approach, method and teaching techniques before
presenting material in the classroom to stimulate students in speaking.
Regarding to the problems above, the researcher proposes the solution
to overcome the problems. It uses Round Robin technique in cooperative
learning. It is very important in teaching speaking because according to
Kagan (2009) Talking Chips technique is a technique of teaching speaking
which make the students interested and help students to speak. It is
because this technique can make students active in the class room, learn
how to cooperate in a group and have a chance to speak English because in
Round Robin, students are divided into several groups and each member
of the group will have a turn to speak English.

B. The Statement of the problem

Based on the background of the study the researcher determined the
problem of the study that becomes the concern of the discussion. The problem
elaborated into a research that:

Does Round Robin has positive effects

toward students creativity in speaking at the first years students of MA AlIkhsan NW Gelondong?
C. The purpose of the study
From the statement of problem stated above, this study is aimed to find
out whether or not; Does Round Robin has positive effects toward students
creativity in speaking

at the first years students of MA Al-Ikhsan NW

Gelondong.
D. The Scopes of the Study
The scopes of the study to be discussed in this writing to the following
point:
1. This research is conducted at the first years Student of SMK Darunnajah
Duman lobar in academic years 2012/2013.
2. The Real Object or Realia which is used in this study is situational
materials in which the Students can find out the true use of English and
they will get some experience by looking at the media used by the teacher
in teaching learning process in the classroom.
E. The significant of the study
1. The theoretical of this study is that the result will give theoretical
information about the input for the English teachers, students as well as
the school to develop their speaking by using real object.
2. Practically, real object are useful for :
a. To Help the students to speak English
b. To Help the teachers in teaching speaking
c. To Give solution in improving English curriculum
d. To encourage the use of media in surrounding, in order to enrich
language learning.
F. The definition of key terms

researchers needs to explain some key terms:
1. The Effect
Effect is the change produce by in action or caused, result or
outcome (Hornby, 1989:385). According to the statement above This
research will do some treatment toward IV (independent variable) to know
the effect of real object in teaching speaking toward the first year student
of SMK Darunnajah duman Lobar in academic year 2012/2013
2. Real object
Real object is the word we use to refer to the things that the
Students can see, touch and feel to help the Students understanding
concepts given by the teacher which is called Realia. Harmer (1983:83)
Realia is a term used in education and library science. in education
Realia are objects from real life used in classroom instruction. Realia
usually use by educators to improve students understanding of other
language or culture using real things and bring them in to the classroom

speaking ability to communicate informally on everyday subject with
sufficient cases and fluency to hold the attention of his listener (David P.
