USA WINS THIRD CONCACAF GOLD CUP CROWN

The USA claimed their third CONCACAF Gold Cup crown
defeating Panama 3:1 on penalty kicks in the 2005 Final held
at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey on 24 July.
The crowd of over 30,000 saw the eighth edition of the
Gold Cup conclude with a scoreless draw after regulation and two overtime periods. This was the second time in the history of the tournament that the championship match was decided by penalty kicks. The last time was in 1991 when the
USA topped Honduras 4:3 for the inaugural CONCACAF Gold Cup at the L.A.
Memorial Coliseum.
In the 2005 Final penalty shootout, Brad Davis, Landon Donovan and Santino
Quaranta scored for the stars & stripes while Chris Armas kick was saved by the
canaleros goalkeeper Jaime Penedo. Felipe Baloy had the only goal for Panama,
with Luis Tejadas kick saved by USA goalkeeper Kasey Keller, while Jorge Dely
Valdes and Alberto Blanco missed the targets with their strikes.
Having reached the Gold Cup final in only their second ever appearance in
the tournament, the Panamanian team received many post-event accolades and
their players Luis Tejada and Jaime Penada were named the Miller Lite Most
Valuable Player and the Allstate Best Goalkeeper respectively.
Panama advanced to the 2005 CONCACAF Gold Cup Final after defeating
Colombia 3:2 in the semifinals at Giants Stadium on 21 July.
The crowd of 41,721 saw Panama take a 2:0 halftime lead over Colombia in
the semifinal encounter after goals from Ricardo Phillips and Jorge Del Valdes in
the 12th and 26th minutes, respectively.
After Jairo Patio got the cafeteros on the board in the 63rd minute, Phillips
increased the canaleros lead 10 minutes later. Patio added his second goal of
the match for Colombia with a minute remaining, but Panama held on for the
win and their first-ever berth to the Gold Cup Final.
In the earlier semifinal match at Giants Stadium, Honduras held a 1:0 advantage with five minutes remaining after a first half goal from Mario Ivan
Guerrero (30th minute), but consecutive scores from John OBrien and Oguchi
Onyewu gave the USA a come-from-behind 2:1 victory and a place in the final.

CONCACAF & UNICEF

UNITED FOR CHILDREN
CONCACAF and UNICEF signed on 21 July, a pledge to
develop a long term partnership to benefit children in
Latin America and the Caribbean. The pledge ceremony
was held between the two semifinal matches of the 2005
CONCACAF Gold Cup on the field at Giants Stadium in
East Rutherford, New Jersey USA.
UNICEF believes that sports and play must be part and
parcel of every childs life, advantaged and disadvantaged,
talented and instinctive, said Andres Franco, UNICEF
Representative. Play comes naturally to children, and is a
powerful force to ensure that children, especially children
in the developing world, realize their right to play.
CONCACAF President, Jack Warner, reinforced this message adding, As the most popular sport in the world,
football has the potential to be a tremendous power for
good, especially for young people. Through this relationship we will explore ways to harness the power of football
to have a positive impact on the lives of children across
this region.

Pumas UNAM of Mexico in the two-legged

UNAM's 2:1 victory over Saprissa in Ciudad de Mexico on 12

claim their third ever CONCACAF Champions Cup title.
Deportivo Saprissa will now represent CONCACAF in the
2005 FIFA World Club Championship Toyota Cup, taking
