ICT USE AND ACCESS BY INDIVIDUALS AND HOUSEHOLDS


SURVEY 2013

ICT Use and Access by Individuals and Households Survey 2013 is the first time survey
conducted by the Department of Statistics Malaysia. The statistics that was obtained consist
of two aspects namely ICT use by individuals and ICT access by households such as
computer, the Internet, mobile phone and others.

ICT use by individuals, Malaysia

The percentage of individuals who used computer was 56.0 per cent, the Internet 57.0 per
cent and mobile phone 94.2 per cent in year 2013. Among the Internet users, 60.3 per cent
were using Internet at least once a day (Chart 1).

In terms of location of using the Internet, 71.2 per cent of individuals using the Internet at
home, followed by any place via mobile phone (55.3%) and work place (37.8%) (Table 1).

Posting information or instant messaging was the main Internet activity which comprised
69.1 per cent. Other activities such as sending or receiving email (65.4%); getting
information about goods or services (65.3%); downloading movies, images, music, watching
TV or video, or listening to radio or music (64.6%) and reading or downloading on-line
newspapers or magazines, electronic books (52.1%) (Table 2).

For types of goods and services purchased over the Internet, 50.4 per cent of individuals
bought clothes, bag & shoes, followed by foods and beverages (49.7%); travel products
(35.4%); accommodation services (28.7%) and personal accessories (27.9%). Meanwhile, the
reasons why individuals did not purchase goods or services via Internet were not interested
(69.5%); prefer to buy in regular stores (49.1%) and lack of knowledge or skills (41.8%).

ICT access by households, Malaysia


The percentage of households with access to the computer was 59.4 per cent, the Internet
58.6 per cent and mobile phone 97.0 per cent (Table 3).

Mobile broadband was commonly access by households where it consists of 50.0 per cent,
compared to fixed broadband (48.2%) and Digital Subscriber Line (1.8%).

Meanwhile, among the reasons households did not have access to the Internet at home were
high cost (24.1%); lack of confidence or skills (19.0%); not interested (17.2%), time
constraint to access the Internet (4.1%) and language barriers (3.8%).
