Many people take their health very seriously. They
eat right, exercise and get plenty of rest. But in today’s
economy, it is also important to be financially healthy.
Just like taking care of your body, there are things you can
do to take care of your finances. And just like staying
physically healthy, staying financially fit isn’t always
easy. However, with pain comes gain...in your bank
account. Here are a few ways to tone those financial
muscles.
The first concept sounds simple, but sometimes is
easier said than done. Don’t spend more than you earn.
There are things in your day-to-day life you can plan for
and there are things that are unforeseen. You can budget
for groceries and the cost can be controlled. But you can’t
budget for a new transmission when your car decides it
needs one. The point is, control what you can, and in time,
you may have extra money to take care of those
unforeseen expenses.
The best way to control your expenses is to create a
budget. Budgeting does not take a mathematical genius.
Can you add and subtract? If so, you can budget. No one
knows your life better than you. You know what bills you
have; you know how much money is coming in. It is just
a matter of sitting down and doing your homework. Once
you have the basic framework of the budget (what is
going out, what is coming in and what is left over), set
goals for yourself. Some sacrifices will probably have to
be made, but that is what it takes to be financially healthy.
Too much junk food can jeopardize your physical
health and too much plastic can jeopardize your financial
health. Credit card debt is the number one obstacle to
being financially fit. Using your credit card can be just as
tempting as a big plate of cheese fries. It’s easy-just to
take it out, swipe it through the credit card reader and
pretend it’s not real money. Most of us intend on paying
the debt back soon, but something usually gets in the way.
With credit card debt, you keep paying for the item
as the amount spent keeps accumulating interest. It’s a
dangerous trap that should be avoided. If you do use your
credit card, PAY MORE THAN THE MINIMUM. You
have probably heard that before and that’s because it’s
good advice. The longer the debt goes unpaid, the more
money you spend and the more the credit card company
earns.
Just like shopping for a bargain at the store, make
sure you’re getting the best deal on things like your home
and car insurance. This is a matter of finding the best plan
for you and then sitting down with your insurance agent.
Insurance can be complicated and you don’t need to be an
expert, but you do need to utilize an expert. Get every
question answered, grill them on every money-saving
option, and make sure they know all the things about you
and your family that may qualify you for a discount. If an
insurance agent wants your business, they will take the
time to educate you.
Invest in your future. If your employer has a 401(k)

(and satisfied). Our cheats? Swapping nonfat cocoa for chocolate and
cholesterol-free spread for not-so-heart-healthy butter.
1 teaspoon instant coffee powder or granules
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup sugar
1/4 cup trans-fat free vegetable oil spread
3 large egg whites
1. Preheat oven to 350 F. Grease 8-by-8-inch metal baking pan. In cup,
dissolve coffee in vanilla extract.
2. On waxed paper, combine flour, cocoa, baking powder and salt.
3. In medium bowl, whisk sugar, vegetable oil spread, egg whites and
coffee mixture until well-mixed; then blend in flour mixture. Spread in
prepared pan.
4. Bake 22 to 24 minutes or until toothpick inserted in brownies 2
inches from edge comes out almost clean. Cool in pan on wire rack,
about 2 hours.
5. When cool, cut brownies into 4 strips, then cut each strip crosswise
into 4 squares. If brownies are difficult to cut, dip knife in hot water;
wipe dry, and cut. Repeat dipping and drying as necessary. Yields 16
brownies.
• Each serving: About 95 calories, 3g total fat (1g saturated), 75mg
sodium, 17g total carbohydrate, 1g dietary fiber, 2g protein.

Indoor Pool Reeks of Chlorine
Q: My parents moved into a condominium complex for retirees that has
an indoor pool. The pool just reeks of chlorine all the time, and I don’t
think it’s healthy. What can I say to the condo management to get them
to reduce the amount of chlorine in the pool? I worry about my dad’s
breathing. -- Larry L., Omaha
A: Tell them basically what you’ve told me. The management may try
to reassure you that the levels of chlorine are safe or that the odor of
chlorine is to be expected in an indoor environment. And they may be
correct -- a mild chlorine odor is not unexpected around a heated pool in
an enclosed area.
But if the odor of chlorine is irritating or overpowering, the manager
may want to check with the maintenance crew to make sure their pool
maintenance procedures are effective. Indoor pools need extra attention,
especially pools used by many people. The pH balance needs to be
monitored and quickly correctly. The pool area needs to be adequately
vented so that gases emitted during the chlorination process exit quickly
and fresh air comes in.
Swimming procedures may need to be reviewed, along with
maintenance, if an acrid smell or cloudy water is noticed. Swimmers
should rinse off before climbing into the pool; the condo association can
remind residents of this.
So, communicate your concerns to management, and encourage your
parents to communicate the problem at their next condo association
meeting (or do so by proxy if legally allowed). Swimming is supposed to
be an enjoyable experience, not an hour of eye-watering misery.
