Farm Business Expenses
Farmers, as in any other type of business, may
deduct ordinary and necessary business expenses.
However, farming is a capital-intensive industry with a
low ratio of income investment. It is subject to risks such
as weather conditions and widely fluctuating prices for its
products that other businesses do not encounter. In
addition, many types of farm income and expenses are
unique to farming and are not inccured by other
businesses. Therefore, there are a number of tax
provisions and considerations that apply only to the
business of farming.
For instance, qualified farmers can use the cash
method of accounting for tax purposes. Deductions for a
cash-basis taxpayer are generally allowed in the year paid.
Exceptions to the general criteria for deducting expenses
of cash basis taxpayers include the accounting for prepaid
farm supplies, and the required capitalization of certain
preproductive costs. In addition, there are special rules for
the treatment of soil and water conservation expenditures;
depreciation; terracing and leveling land; feed and other
costs of raising livestock; labor; fertilizer, lime and other
materials for soil improvement; and vehicles.
Given the variety of special tax considerations
unique to farming, it is important to review your various
expenditures and their substantiation and recordkeeping

an appointment to discuss taking full advantage of farm
tax provisions and making the proper elections.

Gambling Winnings
You may know when to hold ‘em and when to fold ‘em,
but do you know how and when to report ‘em? Whether
you are playing cards or the slots, it is important to know
the rules about reporting gambling winnings and loses.
Here are seven things the IRS wants you to know about
reporting what Lady Luck has sent your way.
1. All gambling winnings are fully taxable. Even if your
total losses exceed your total winnings, the gross winnings
must be reported as taxable income.
2. Gambling income includes, but is not limited to,
winnings from lotteries, raffles, horse races, poker
tournaments and casinos. It includes cash winnings as well
as the fair market value of prizes, such as cars and trips.
3. A payer is required to issue you a Form W-2G if you
receive certain gambling winnings or if you have gambling
winnings subject to federal income tax withholding.
4. Even if a W-2G is not issued, all gambling winnings
must be reported as taxable income. Therefore, you may be
required to pay an estimated tax on the gambling winnings.
5. You must report your gambling winnings on page one
of Form 1040.
6. If you itemize your deductions on Schedule A of Form
1040, you can deduct gambling losses you had during the
year, but only up to the amount of your winnings. Your
losses are not subject to the 2-percent of adjusted gross
income limitation.
7. It is important to keep an accurate diary or similar
record of your gambling winnings and losses. To deduct
your losses, you must be able to provide receipts, tickets,
statements or other records that show the amount of both
winnings and losses.

to work at the PA 4-H Booth. The theme of this year’s booth
was SET- Science, Engineering and Technology. The girls got
the opportunity to promote 4-H and to help youth with the
hands on science project of “Befoul Blast”. The experiment
introduces youth to befouls, how organic materials can be
converted to fuel to supply energy. The experiment showcases
how cellulose and sugars in plants can be used to create
ethanol. The girls conducted the experiment with
approximately 50 youth and talked with around 400 people
during their Sunday morning and afternoon shift. If interested

• You’ve probably never heard of Countess Rosa Branicka, but she
accomplished an amazing feat. In the mid-19th century, at the age of 63,
the wealthy Polish noblewoman became ill. The diagnosis given by
experts in Germany was breast cancer, and immediate surgery was
recommended. For reasons unknown, the countess declined the
treatment, then set about purchasing her own surgical instruments. Once
all the tools were assembled, Branicka checked into a hotel in Paris and
quickly, and lived to the ripe old age of 82.
• It was American humorist Evan Esar who came up the following
definition: “Statistics: The only science that enables different experts

• The Emperor Charlemagne, who conquered much of Western and

Don’t Expect to Make Big Money Online
There are probably more people using the Internet to find a job than
there are going to employment agencies. From there, it’s not a giant step
from seeking “regular” employment to looking for ways to make money
fast and easy on the Internet.
Even if you’ve been on the Internet a long time, there’s something
about the possibility of “fast money” that can make even the most
cautious person take risks.
Here are some warnings about making money via the Internet.
--Don’t spend a single dollar on online programs that claim to teach
you how to make millions. The way they make their money is by putting
those ads on the Internet and selling that “secret” -- which is how to put
ads on the Internet -- to people like you.
--Don’t fall for those “make money at home” deals. Most are not
legitimate. The ones that involve assembling crafts at home end up
costing you money for supplies, and then your product will be deemed
“not acceptable.” Mystery shopper is only good if you have time to spare
and will settle for a few dollars. “Mail envelopes/send e-mail from
home” will only net you a list of companies that might hire that kind of
worker.
--Don’t choose this time to get into Multi-Level Marketing (MLM).
You’ll end up spending money on products you can’t unload, and you’ll
annoy your friends as you try to get them signed up as your downstream.
--Don’t pay an advance fee for anything.
--Don’t get involved in online auctions unless you’re already savvy.
Better to find a legitimate company in your area that can sell your items
online for a fee.
--If you must dabble on the Internet, go with an affiliate program (or
a few of them, to maximize the potential) linked to real companies, such
as Amazon.com. In that case you would set up a Web site where you
write about a topic you’re well versed in. (Check GoDaddy.com for
inexpensive Web sites and look for cheap Web hosting.) Then make
links to books or products associated with that subject. Don’t expect to
actually make any money. If you do, you’ll be surprised. If you don’t,
you’re only out a few hours of the time it takes to set up a Web site.

only about 2,000 of them were made at that time. What is the value of

A: First, let’s review a little history. The Elgin Watch Company was
founded in 1864, and one of its first products was the 18 sized B.W.
Raymond railroad grade watch. From about 1867 through the next 100
years, more than 60 million watches were produced by Elgin. This
company might not have made the best watches in the marketplace, but
it did provide consumers with watches that were durable and affordable.
Elgin made its first wrist watch in about 1910. To find out more about

A decade later, the company was taken over by Meriden Britannia

Indoor Pool Reeks of Chlorine
Q: My parents moved into a condominium complex for retirees that has
an indoor pool. The pool just reeks of chlorine all the time, and I don’t
think it’s healthy. What can I say to the condo management to get them
to reduce the amount of chlorine in the pool? I worry about my dad’s
breathing. -- Larry L., Omaha
A: Tell them basically what you’ve told me. The management may try
to reassure you that the levels of chlorine are safe or that the odor of
chlorine is to be expected in an indoor environment. And they may be
correct -- a mild chlorine odor is not unexpected around a heated pool in
an enclosed area.
But if the odor of chlorine is irritating or overpowering, the manager
may want to check with the maintenance crew to make sure their pool
maintenance procedures are effective. Indoor pools need extra attention,
especially pools used by many people. The pH balance needs to be
monitored and quickly correctly. The pool area needs to be adequately
vented so that gases emitted during the chlorination process exit quickly
and fresh air comes in.
Swimming procedures may need to be reviewed, along with
maintenance, if an acrid smell or cloudy water is noticed. Swimmers
should rinse off before climbing into the pool; the condo association can
remind residents of this.
So, communicate your concerns to management, and encourage your
parents to communicate the problem at their next condo association
meeting (or do so by proxy if legally allowed). Swimming is supposed to
be an enjoyable experience, not an hour of eye-watering misery.

Kewpie doll that made her
famous. One of the better
references is Kewpie for
Collectors by John Axe (Hobby
House Press, $27.95). I could not
find your Kewpie bank in the
book, but that isn’t surprising,
since literally thousands of designs
by numerous companies were
made and distributed throughout
the 20th century. I did contact a
bank collector who said yours
might be worth about $40 in good

The rich texture and chocolatey goodness of these bake-sale favorites
speak of decadence, but compare each square’s 95 calories, 3 grams of
fat and 0 cholesterol to a regular brownie’s doubly high calories, nearly
quadrupled fat and 60 milligrams of cholesterol, and you’ll feel virtuous
(and satisfied). Our cheats? Swapping nonfat cocoa for chocolate and
cholesterol-free spread for not-so-heart-healthy butter.
1 teaspoon instant coffee powder or granules
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup sugar
1/4 cup trans-fat free vegetable oil spread
3 large egg whites
1. Preheat oven to 350 F. Grease 8-by-8-inch metal baking pan. In cup,
dissolve coffee in vanilla extract.
2. On waxed paper, combine flour, cocoa, baking powder and salt.
3. In medium bowl, whisk sugar, vegetable oil spread, egg whites and
coffee mixture until well-mixed; then blend in flour mixture. Spread in
prepared pan.
4. Bake 22 to 24 minutes or until toothpick inserted in brownies 2
inches from edge comes out almost clean. Cool in pan on wire rack,
about 2 hours.
5. When cool, cut brownies into 4 strips, then cut each strip crosswise
into 4 squares. If brownies are difficult to cut, dip knife in hot water;
wipe dry, and cut. Repeat dipping and drying as necessary. Yields 16
brownies.
• Each serving: About 95 calories, 3g total fat (1g saturated), 75mg
sodium, 17g total carbohydrate, 1g dietary fiber, 2g protein.
