The Fire Brigades Union (FBU) special conference will decide the next steps in their pensions campaign. While strikes were called loyally, their aim of securing fit-for-purpose pensions was not achieved, and firefighters in the UK will pay more for less. Some feel more could have been won if national leadership called longer, harder-hitting strikes. The group Fightback aims to facilitate organizing solidarity across union levels, debate effective tactics, and identify leadership candidates committed to developing the union's fighting capacity. They call on members to join in taking the next step.

Manchester will decide the fate of our pensions campaign. When we started this campaign our aim was to secure pensions which were fit for purpose. Unfortunately and despite the valiant efforts of FBU members who answered the strike calls loyally and with vigour we havent achieved our aim yet. Firefighters throughout the UK will pay more for less, and in England and Wales despite the assurances of Penny Mordaunt we still face the real prospect of no job no pension just for getting older.
Ballot
Many in our union feel that more could
have been won. The 78% yes vote in the ballot showed our willingness to strike, but the national leadership failed to call the strikes needed to win. The short duration and stop start nature of our strikes let the government off the hook and undermined the momentum of the membership.
London, Greater Manchester, Essex
and Merseyside called for a harder hitting strike strategy, but others did not agree. Moreover the lack of response to the lockout in Bucks led to the victimisation of Ricky Matthews and fuelled the bosses confidence to lock Essex out too. Now the attacks on our jobs and service is set to continue as will the pay freeze and attacks on the Grey Book. This means it is vital we pull together all those who want to see a real fight to defend our union.
Solidarity
Fightback aims to help facilitate this.
We want to organise solidarity at every level of the union. We want to debate what are the most effective tactics for fighting back and help to implement that in every brigade. Most of all we want to get organised. We want to develop links between FBU members throughout the country so that when anyone of us is attacked we can organise a response everywhere. We also want to identify and stand candidates for leadership positions who want to develop the fighting capacity of our union. Whatever conference decides the task of developing a fighting union will remain. This is the task we call on you to join us in. Will you take the next step?
