Trinity United
Methodist Church
December 2014/
January 2015

Dear Members and Friends of Trinity UMC:

Do you ever struggle to find the right gift at Christmas? May
I suggest the following:
Seek out a forgotten friend.
Write a long overdue note.
Find the time to keep a promise.
Make or bake something for someone else. Anonymously.
Enter into another's sorrow.
Take a relaxing walk with a friend.
Turn off the television and talk to love ones.
Treat someone to an ice cream cone (yogurt would be fine)
or coffee.
Pray for someone who is hurting.
Give a soft answer even though you feel strongly.
Encourage an older person.
Point out one thing you appreciate most about a love one,
someone you work with, or live near.

Christmas Symbols of Beauty, Peace, Joy,

Hope, & Light
Health Outreach Ministry
Dr. Dot Baker

CHRISTMAS

Christmas Day on December 25th celebrates the birth of Baby Jesus. The word
"Christmas" means "Christ's Mass" - derived from the English term "Christes masse."
We have marvelous Christmas symbols of beauty, peace, joy, hope, and light. The Christmas story is
wonderfully portrayed in Luke 2. The ultimate news is that For unto us a child is born; unto us a son is
given. As with the angels and others, we should praise and give glory to God for His greatest gift and
peace on earth, goodwill toward men.

MANGER

The word manger is derived from the Greek word phante that denotes the ledge or projections on
which hay or other food was placed for travelers animals in their crib or stall. Mary brought forth her firstborn son, and
wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn (Luke 2:7).
Baby Jesus was born, clothed, and placed in a most humble bed where animals ate. The angels sign was that visitors would
find Baby Jesus and his parents in the humble stable setting.

ANGELS

- The word angel is derived from the Latin word angelus meaning one going or one sent. Angels are
seen as intermediary spiritual beings between God and man. They are instruments who convey Gods messages to mankind.
At Christmas, angels were glorious messengers who proclaimed the greatest news story ever. To the shepherds, fear not:
for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David, a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord (Luke 2:10-11). Their message rings clear over the centuries.

POINSETTIA

- A charming story is told of Pepita, a poor Mexican girl who had no gift to present the Christ Child at
Christmas Eve Services. As Pepita walked slowly to the chapel with her cousin Pedro, her heart was filled with sadness rather than joy. "I am sure, Pepita, that even the most humble gift, if given in love, will be acceptable in His eyes," said Pedro
consolingly. Not knowing what else to do, Pepita knelt by the roadside and gathered a handful of common weeds, fashioning
them into a small bouquet. Looking at the scraggly bunch of weeds, she felt more saddened and embarrassed than ever by the
humbleness of her offering. She fought back a tear as she entered the small village chapel. As she approached the altar, she
remembered Pedro's kind words: "Even the most humble gift, if given in love, will be acceptable in His eyes." She felt her
spirit lift as she knelt to lay the bouquet at the foot of the nativity scene. Suddenly, the bouquet of weeds burst into blooms of
brilliant red, and all who saw them were certain that they had witnessed a Christmas miracle right before their eyes. From
that day on, the bright red flowers were known as the Flores de Noche Buena, or Flowers of the Holy Night, for they
bloomed each year during the Christmas season (Paul Ranch)

CAROLS, CANDLES, BELLS, and EVERGREENS

All of these symbols proclaim Gods eternal and

everlasting gift to us. Music, words, lights, musical sounds, and continuous green foliage remind us that Jesus, God, & the Holy Spirit are and always will be present and will reign forever and ever. Those thoughts certainly warm us and light our lives at
Christmas and throughout the year.

CELEBRATE

your Christmas season and New Years visions with these symbols of beauty, peace, joy,
hope, and light. God uses all of them to announce and confirm His most precious message of all: For God
so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life (John 3:16).

Christmas and New Year blessings to everyone from your Health Outreach Ministry

By Carolyn Lewis,
RN
The Christmas season is here, and with it comes
joy, happiness, excitement, and for some who have
lost loved ones this year, a time of grief. Listed below are just a few suggestions that might help those
who are dealing with grief over the loss of a loved
one, or who are having other heavy issues to deal
with during the holiday season.
Ways to Cope
Have a Plan A/Plan B Plan A is you go to the
Thanksgiving, Christmas Day or Christmas Eve dinner with family and friends. If it doesnt feel right,
have your plan B ready. Plan B may be a movie you
both liked or a photo album to look through or a special place you went to together. Many people find
that when they have Plan B in place, just knowing it
is there is enough.
Cancel the Holiday all together. Yes, you can cancel
the Holiday. If you are going through the motions
and feeling nothing, cancel them. Take a year off.
They will come around again. For others, staying
involved with the Holidays is a symbol of life continuing. Let the Holiday routine give you a framework during these tough times.
Try the Holidays in a new way. Grief has a unique
way of giving us the permission to really evaluate
what parts of the Holidays you enjoy and what parts
you dont. Remember, there is no right or wrong way
to handle the Holidays in grief. You have to decide
what is right for you and do it. You have every right
to change your mind, even a few times. Friends and
family members may not have a clue how to help
you through the Holidays and you may not either.
It is very natural to feel you may never enjoy the
Holidays again. They will certainly never be the
same as they were. However, in time, most people
are able to find meaning again in the traditions as a
new form of the Holiday Spirit grows inside of them.
Even without grief, our friends and relatives often
think they know how our Holidays should look, what
the family should and shouldnt do.

Dos and Donts

Do be gentle with yourself and protect yourself.
Dont do more than you want, and dont do anything that does not serve your soul and your loss
Do allow time for the feelings.
Dont keep feelings bottled up. If you have 500
tears to cry dont stop at 250.
Do allow others to help. We all need help at certain times in our lives.
Dont ask if you can help or should help a friend
in grief. Just help. Find ways; invite them to
group events or just out for coffee.
Do, in grief, pay extra attention to the children.
Children are too often the forgotten grievers.
Grief.com is an excellent source for help.
It is not easy to get through those first holidays but
we know that family and friends will support you
and offer their prayers and support to help you cope
with your loss.
My husband and I send all of you Holiday greetings
and wish you a Blessed and joyous Christmas.

CONGREGATIONAL CARE
I would like to thank all of you who have signed up for
the Volunteer ministry and know that many of our congregational families will be blessed by your time and talent. Our ministry to the folks at Pine Bluff continues
each month, and we will be going the week before
Christmas and we will serve them communion at this
time.
Our bus trip to the American Music Theater was wonderful. We had a great time and enjoyed not only the
show, but also the fellowship with one another. Will
begin to plan trips for spring and fall after the first of the
year.
LUNCH BUNCH
We are having a slight change in the program for December Lunch bunch, and at the time of the this writing, I
do not have everything lined up, but will let you know
the program in the church bulletin as soon as it is finalized.
Are there programs that you would like to have at lunch
bunch next year? If so, please let me know and I will try
to schedule them, if at all possible.

Monica and Mr. Scrooge

Monica and Mr. Scrooge, a Christian drama adaptation of Dickens A Christmas Carol,
written and directed by Rev. DeFino, will be presented at the Delmarva Evangelistic
Convention Center on Gordy Road in Salisbury. This is a fun family activity to be held
Saturday, December 13 at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday, December 14, at 2:30 p.m. A $10
donation is recommended. A portion of the proceeds goes to support the HALO ministry.

December 10 will be our last study of Hebrews for

this semester; however we will resume the study
on February 4. We will also be covering the book
of James.

The Monday Afternoon Bible Study continues every week at

1:00 p.m. and the Berean Adult Sunday School class continues
at 10:45 a.m. every Sunday. In both of these classes, which
meet in room 303 of the JMB, we are exploring the nature of
ancient mid-east poetry and the fascinating prophetic words
from a variety of authors in this popular yet often misunderstood book of Psalms. Our last Monday session for the semester will be December 15, and our last Sunday session is December 14. We will resume the weekday study on Tuesdays
starting on February 10 and the Sunday School class on February 8.

TRINITY DISASTER RELIEF TEAM UPDATE

Janal Walton and Gary Brown
Our Trinity Disaster Relief Team, church members, part of the ASP team, and other members of our community have
been busy at the HALO Building constructing a new metal studded wall that will house the homeless men in our community.
This room is 19 feet 9 inches tall and the width of the warehouse building. This will provide a dorm- style room for 55 men
each night. The sheetrock and insulation installation is almost complete after almost 2 months of weekly visits. We will be
mudding our Trinity wall in the very near future! Thanks to our churchs Trinity Disaster Relief money and other donations this wall has almost been paid for in full.
Please purchase a bag LUMINARY for Christmas Eve for $10 to be displayed outside which will help us pay for future expenses. Thanks for your support in keeping our homeless population safer this year.
THIRD GRADE BIBLE PRESENTATION
Each third grader will receive Gods 66 books of His Word on January 11 at the 9:30 service. The Bibles will be given to Sydney Alexis Block, Case Aleck Dempsey, Christopher James Howard, John Alan Kostelac, Philip Cameron Mason,

CHRISTMAS EVE PROGRAM
As we prepare for the Advent Season our youth and children are practicing for the Christmas Eve program at 7:00 pm.
Our Christmas Eve play is called Our Little Christmas Town written by Tina English and arranged by Alan Billingsley. Its
will be a busy night with a 4:00, 7:00, 9:00 and 11:00 service; so pick one and be blessed with the message of Gods son Jesus
Christ.
CHRISTIAN DRAMA CAMP
Thanks to Dean DeFino and Power Productions, Mulan Bell, John Moran, and I had the privilege of being part of the

ASK THE REV

Q.

What is Americas role in Biblical Prophecy?

Although many modern nations whose ancient names are mentioned in Scripture play a significant role in future events, America is not listed as one of them. There have been volumes of
books and articles written on Americas role, but all our facts should come from Scripture, and
it is clear that America does not play a major role, although its mention can be hinted in a few
passages. We do know from Ezekiel 38:1-6 that one of the pre-tribulation events that will
take place is an invasion of Israel by the leader of Magog, Meshech, and Tubal which are all
ancient names for the land that consists of modern day Russia. Ezekiel 38:13 mentions a list
of countries that will protest this invasion of Russia and one of the countries listed is Tarshish
which many believe refers to England and her villages (or young lions) which would include
the countries that she spawned, including America. The best that we can get from Scripture is that America may be one
of the nations that will protest this invasion of Israel by Russia, but the protest goes no further and the invasion will take
place. For whatever reason, America, although protesting, will not see fit to use military force to stop the invasion either
because it is too weak to do so or politically oriented not to or perhaps both. We do know that this invading army is destroyed by Gods anger against them. Ezekiel 38:17- 39:6. Some have suggested that Ezekiel 39:6 may hint at America.
This verse states that the fire that God will send upon the invading force from Russia will also hit those who live safely
in the coastlands. In their view, America is one of those who live safely in the coastlands, and thus a nuclear exchange
with the invading forces could hit and destroy much of America. Again as with any comment on Americas role in
prophecy, this is speculative.
We also know that a one world government, led by the Antichrist, will exist and be made up of ten kingdoms from
around the world (not just Europe). It is possible that one of those kingdoms will be America, but again this is speculative. It is clear that the political mood just before the tribulation will lean heavily on one world government, and thus
whatever role America plays in the end times it will be similar to many nations of the world: a spirit of world cooperation and government. It should be noted that three of these kingdoms initially rebel against the Antichrist, but America
is not one of those three.

Ask the Rev is a Trumpet newsletter feature where Rev. DeFino will answer your questions on the Bible, doctrine or
religious beliefs and events. Send or call your questions into the church office and they will be answered in future issues.

CHRISTMAS CEREAL
Lets Crunch for Christmas:
Our food requestCEREAL!
All donations will be welcomed by
the Lazarus Food Pantry.
Trinity gives more than food:
We give help for the hungry and a
message sent with love and hope.

The food themes for the Lazarus Food Pantry in the next two months are as follows:
December 2014: Cereal
January 2015: Soups
The Lazarus Food Pantry is serving a large number of people at this time of the year. In addition to cereal and soup,
the food pantry still needs any other food items to supplement its government foods. Total contribution for this year
is 4,000 items.
Trinity volunteers will serve a hot meal to the hungry and homeless at the Joseph House, on Wednesday, December
17 and Wednesday, January 21. The recipients are always very grateful.
On Saturday, December 6, Trinity volunteers will be preparing and serving 150 hot meals for Gods Kitchen at Gr ace United Methodist
Church.

I will be stepping down as Mission Chairperson, and Ric Bloodsworth (240-344-6194) will be taking over in January 2015. Thank you for all your support of Trinitys missions projects!
Praying for a Blessed and Beautiful Christmas season for all, and a Healthy and Happy New Year ,too!

December Recipe
Cranberry Layer Bars
Ingredients
1 roll (16.5 oz) Pillsbury refrigerated sugar cookies
1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk (not evaporated)
2 teaspoons grated orange peel
1 egg
1 cup chopped fresh cranberries (can substitute dried cranberries just cut in half)
1 cup white vanilla baking chips (6 oz)
1 cup semisweet chocolate chips (6 oz)
1 cup coarsely crushed pretzels (2 oz) (you can use chopped pecans or English walnuts
1 - Heat oven to 350F. Spray 13x9-inch pan with cooking spray. Break up cookie dough into pan. With floured
fingers, press dough evenly in bottom of pan. Bake 18 to 20 minutes or until puffed
and edges are golden brown.
2 - In medium bowl, beat condensed milk, orange peel and egg with whisk until combined. Remove
partially baked crust from oven. Spread milk mixture evenly over crust; sprinkle evenly with
cranberries, chips and pretzels.
3 - Bake 25 to 30 minutes longer or until center is set. Cool 1 1/2 hours. Refrigerate 30 minutes or until chocolate is
set. Cut into 6 rows by 4 rows.

Where is this tree?

This question was asked in the
November issue of The Trumpet.

The title: Do you know who these Trinity carolers are? (Circa
1960). If you have any old Trinity pictures and documents, we
would like to make copies for our Trinity history archives. . Call
T.J. Mumford at 410- 713-9670 (You could also use it in an
future Trumpet.)

The correct answer, submitted

by Bill Turner, is:
It is a linden tree aka Basswood. It is more
than 100 years old, as determined by our arborist, and it is believed to be planted when the
church was built. It has a crown of more than 77
feet and is more than 11 feet in circumference at
dbh (diameter breast height (roughly 4 feet off
the ground)). We roughly guessed that it is over
85 feet tall.
It is not native to the shore, which is why we
know it was planted by others and is unusual
because it prefers to grow in moist, rich ,alkaline
soil while most of the shore is acidic and sandy.
It is a very slow grower.
Ten years ago it qualified as a state champion
tree, but since then other trees in western Maryland have been found that are larger.
Its certainly a part of our heritage at Trinity.
