APC308 Financial Management

Individual assignment

Weighting 100% of the marks for this module

This is an individual assignment of 3,000 words. (+ or 10%)

The hand in Week; 31 January 2015
Note : Only for BAB&M Level 3 Students
Requirements:
This assignment is in TWO parts, with each part carrying a maximum mark of 50%.
Part A.
The question of the effect of dividends on share prices has been a controversial one for many years. Two
differing theoretical schools of thought are prevalent within this area, one supporting dividend relevance,
and the other providing support for dividend irrelevance. Critically evaluate the two schools of thought,
supporting the discussion with relevant academic evidence.

In this section students should demonstrate both understanding and knowledge of the
dividend relevance and irrelevance theoretical viewpoints. The discussion / evaluation
should be supported with relevant empirical research that has been performed within
this area and should be referenced accordingly. The inclusion and development of
relevant numerical examples to support the discussion would be beneficial although this
should not form the main basis of the
work.
(50%)

Part B
Critically evaluate the differing ways in which the shareholders of a company can
encourage its managers to act in a way that that is consistent with the objective of
maximization of shareholder wealth.
In this section students should demonstrate understanding, knowledge, and an ability to
critically evaluate the importance of agency theory and its role within financial
management. Differing techniques that can be utilised to address the agency problem
that is faced by many businesses should be included within the response. The
evaluation should demonstrate evidence of wider reading and incorporate a critical
viewpoint rather than simply describing core concepts.
(50%)
The University policy on cheating collusion and plagiarism will be applied to this piece of
work.
Guidance:
Students should approach this assignment as an academic essay, weighing the arguments for and
against each issue, making comment on the literature and drawing logical conclusions. Academic
referencing using the Harvard referencing approach is a key requirement of the assignment to
demonstrate wider reading and to underpin the discussions, ensuring they have relevant depth.
