10. The article discusses the role of Reverend Jim Jones in the death of the
hundreds of followers of his Peoples Temple in Jonestown, Guyana. The author
provides an overview of the life of Jones and the People Temple, a cult-like secular
church that he founded and operated. He talks about the issues on how Jones has
run his organization. He also looks into the survival of Deborah Layton from the
inner circle and the death of U.S. Congressman Leo Ryan during his investigation
to Jonestown .New American (08856540). 3/19/2012, Vol. 28 Issue 6, p33-39.

11. Though much is known about the charismatic and destructive nature of the
Reverend Jim Jones, scholars understand far less about the group dynamics of
Jonestown. To better understand this group phenomenon, the authors analyzed the

audiotape of the final White Night sermon delivered by Jones on the eve of the
mass suicide. They conceptualize this material as a powerful illustration of the final
stage of the actualization of a psychotic and cocreated fantasy of masochistic
group death. The wholesale and deliberate self-annihilation is conceptualized as
the terminal stage in the process of malignant cult formation. The authors see
Jones as both victim and perpetrator of the cult's unconscious wishes and
yearnings for death and presumed martyrdom. They describe a tentative 5-stage
theory of group death in cults. Drawing on W. R. Bion's (1961) theory of the pairing
basis assumptions, the authors propose that the element that distinguishes early
and salvageable cults from those that disintegrate into malignancy and death is
the particular manner in which the group's aggression is metabolized. They draw
parallels between the apocalyptic rhetoric and belief systems of the People's
Temple and certain strains of American domestic terrorism, particularly the
Christian Identity Movement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] Psychoanalysis &
