Markus' Monthly Update - February 2015 Edition
FEBRUARY 2015
Advisory
Neighborhood
Commission
8C
January
was
an
eventful
month
in
ANC
8C.
W eve
gotten
the
opportunity
to
showcase
the
best
of
our
community
and
I
am
proud
to
have
been
an
active
community
partner
in
some
great
initiatives
and
visited
some
great
places
in
our
neighborhood.
On
New
Years
Eve,
I
joined
other
community
members,
faculty,
staff,
and
government
partners
at
the
NEW
Ballou
High
School
to
help
unpack
boxes
and
prepare
classrooms
for
the
new
semester.
Ballou
is
the
centerpiece
for
new
projects
in
our
district
and
I
am
excited
to
be
involved
w ith
the
Ballou
family
to
make
sure
they
have
all
the
community
support
they
need
to
succeed.
If
you
want
to
volunteer
at
Ballou,
contact
Dr.
Kenann
McKenzie-Thomspon,
Director
o f
Operations,
at
kenann.mckenzie-thompson@dc.gov.
I
also
had
the
opportunity
to
stop
by
the
Congress
Heights
Senior
Wellness
Center
(also
in
8C04
at
3500
MLK
Ave.,
SE)
to
take
a
tour
and
talk
about
their
great
programming
for
our
seniors
across
Ward
8!

On
New
Years
Day,
I
was
proud
to
run
with
Mayor
Muriel
B owser
at
the
Fresh
Start
5K.
The
next
day,
I
joined
residents
from
across
the
District
in
celebrating
her
inauguration
as
Mayor
of
the
District
of
Columbia
and,
w ith
Advisory
Neighborhood
Commissioners
from
the
across
the
city,
w as
sworn
in
to
my
2-year
term
to
represent
the
residents
of
Congress
Heights
and
Washington
Highlands.
Thank
you!
January
7th
was
the
first
A NC
8C
meeting
of
the
year
and
the
first
of
my
term
and
it
was
good
to
get
community
updates
and
take
care
of
administrative
tasks
that
will
set
us
on
sound
footing
for
a
successful
year.
Join
us
for
our
next
meeting
on
Wednesday,
February
4th!
On
January
9th,
Council
Chairman
Phil
Mendelson
held
a
W ard
8
Community
Meeting
to
talk
about
how
he
and
other
members
of
the
Council
want
to
work
on
behalf
of
our
residents,
especially
until
our
the
vacancy
left
by
the
late
Mayor
Marion
S.
Barry
is
filled
in
the
Ward
8
seat.
Ward
8
still
has
representation
and
its
our
duty
to
put
o ur
public
servants
to
work!
In
celebration
of
what
would
have
been
Dr.
Martin
Luther
King
Jr.s
86 th
Birthday,
I
got
to
visit
my
old
school,
Martin
Luther
King
Elementary
(here
in
8C)
to
speak
and
participate
in
their
annual
celebration
on
January
15th.
It
was
great
to
return
to
King
and
to
offer
words
of
encouragement
to
the
kids
in
our
community.
The
celebrations
continued
on
Monday,
January
19th
as
our
entire
community
hosted
the
Martin
Luther
King
Peace
Walk
and
Parade
on
MLK
Ave.
Moderate
weather
and
citywide
participation
made
it
a
great
day
and
it
was
great
to
see
all
of
you
out
there!
In
response
to
the
murders
of
17-year-old
Philip
Jones
and
22-year-old
Kevin
Owens,
both
in
the
Congress
Heights
community,
ANC
8C
co-sponsored
a
community
conversation
to
stop
the
violence
that
attracted
nearly
300
residents.
Residents,
youth,
community
organizations,
school
leaders,
government
officials,
and
neighborhood
leaders
came
together
to
talk
about
the
problems
and
to
come
up
with
solutions
that
w ill
provide
a
permanent
fix
to
the
violence.
A
final
report
w ill
be
prepared
and
submitted
to
Mayor
Bowser
in
the
next
few
days.
February
looks
to
be
an
even
more
eventful
month
than
this
one
and
I
look
forward
to
engaging
you
and
advocating
for
our
community
in
the
weeks
and
months
to
come.
Come
out
for
refreshments
and
an
informative
meet
and
greet
with
our
new
ANC
Commissioner!
Join
your
neighbors
and
representatives
from
government
and
community
organizations
to
explore
resources
that
could
help
you
and
make
our
neighborhood
better!
Stay
tuned
for
guest
speakers!
