Former television news anchor finds

his second calling at Holmdel High

Gov. Chris Christie remains coy about his White
House ambitions even with the launch of his Leadership Matters for America presidential campaign fund
and a nonstop political travel schedule.
The new political action committee, or PAC, can accept donations to pay for expenses such as polling, staff
and travel. But Christie said having a PAC only means
that there are a group of people who want to be supportive of me continuing to look at the problems in the country.
Is it a campaign kickoff?
No, he said.
Yet Christies swing into Americas heartland last
weekend said otherwise. He delivered a speech to religious conservatives at the Iowa Freedom Summit, and
it had the look of an unofficial campaign kickoff.
Other establishment-backed hopefuls for the 2016
Republican presidential nomination, such as Jeb Bush
and Mitt Romney (who announced Friday he would not
run), bypassed the chance to connect with the demanding social-conservative wing of the party.
But Christie, as the governor of a blue Northeastern
state, scored points with his visit, said Tom Donelson, an
Iowa businessman who attended the summit.
He didnt hurt himself by coming here, and you have
to figure at this point, hes committed to a presidential
campaign, even though he hasnt said that, Donelson
said. This wasnt his audience, and hes not my No. 1

DeNovellis had a great job in TV, but sometimes

you just need a change. That urge came on in March

HOLMDEL By his own admission,

Holmdel High School senior Richie
Jablonski was not a good student.
I thought maybe the army or law
enforcement would straighten me
out, he said. What I really needed
was a mentor to guide me toward my
career choice.
Enter Bryan DeNovellis, television
broadcasting teacher. The 44-year-old Old Bridge
resident took the long route to the classroom, having
worked for 15 years at News 12 New Jersey, where
he was an anchor and sports director. DeNovellis
covered the Super Bowl and Stanley Cup finals.
When he talks, teenagers listen.
Once Mr. D came into the picture, it was like
sunlight shining down, Jablonski said. He made
everything seem possible to me and made me feel
like I can actually succeed in doing this.
How DeNovellis came into the picture, and what
hes doing there, is the serendipitous story of a midlife career change and its ripple effect.
