SKELETAL SYSTEM

* FRAMEWORK system of the body

* Composed of different bines of the
body and cartilages forming the
framework of the body.
Bones
* Made up of calcium
* Hardest part of complesing the
skeleton of the vertebrae
* Resist tension
* Dense connective tissue that serves
as the storage of calcium of the body.
Main Functions of Skeletal system
1. Support
- serves as the framework of the entire
body system.
2. Protection
- protects the delicate organs of the
body.
3. Movement
- muscles are able to move because of
their attachment with bones by means
of tendons.
4. Mineral storage
- bones are considered as the
storchonse of calcium
5. Blood Cell Formation
- because of the presence of bone
marrow.
Four Classification of Bones
1. Long Bones
- Typically longer than wide
Ex. Femur, humerus, unlna, radius,
tibia, fibula
2. Short Bones
- Generally cube in shapes
Ex. Carpals, Tarcals
*bones are connected by joints*
*HYOID Bone the only bone in the
body that has no
connection/articulation with other
bone/joint/*
3. Flat bones
- thin flattened

- usually curved
Ex. Scapul, Sternum, Cranium, Ribs
4. Irregular bones
- Vary in shape
Ex. Vertebrae, hips
5. Sesamoid bones
- knee cap
- Patella

CRANIUM, FACIAL BONES

1. Frontal Forms the forehead, front
of the skull
2. Parietal forms the side walls of
your cranium
3. Temporal- contains your ear canal
4. Occipital- forms the back of your
cranium
*Fontanels assifies withing 2 years*
JOINTS OF THE SKULL SUTURES
*facial joints*
* Sutures Joints of the Skull
- there are immovable jointsof the
skull the connects the major cranium

-Ribs
-The center of
the ribs
- The uppermost
of the sternum
-The Blade of
Sternum
-The tip of
sternum

bones vary in shape.

1. Coronial connects the parietal
bone and frontal bone
2. Saggital connects the parietal
bones
3. Lamboid between the parietal
and occipital
4. Squamous Temporal between
parietal and temporal
JOINTS OF THE BODY
Joints the articulation/point of
attachment between 2 bones.
FUNCTION OF JOINTS
1. Holds the bone together
2. Gives the skeleton flexibility

3. Makes bones growth possible.

+ 2 bones (the sactum & coccyx)
1-7 Cervical Vertebrae (Smallest
vertebrae)
Neck- c1,c2,c3,c4,c5,c6,c7
c1- atlas- enables the head to nod.
c2- axis- enables the head to look left
to right.
T1-T12- Thoracic Vertebrae
-Articulate w/ ribs (Connected)
-Posterior
L1-L5- Lumbar Vertebrae
25&26- Sactum (it is connected to the
