is equally renowned for its wonderful restaurants, cafes, eateries and bars. The burgeoning

Of course, frozen pina coladas are not what make this island a culinary paradise. The towns
tropical atmosphere plays an unmistakable roles in the creation of Wildwood cuisine. Fresh
seafood gure prominently on island menus, as do french fries, funnel cake and pizza for a taste
of the boardwalk specialties. Be sure to stop in at one of the many little eateries to sample the
inexpensive and delicious fare. Or treat your family to a ne and elegant dining experience, its

Seafood is what visitors to the Wildwoods are always asking for, and it is certainly the star in
that department. Stone crab claws, lobster, and yellowtail snapper you name it: if it swims,
crawls or grows in the ocean, you can be sure its on a menu in this food-loving cities. Among
the most sought-after Wildwood delicacies is ounder, which are harvested from sheries in
and around the Wildwoods and Cape May. So desirable that you can order ounder in a variety
of ways, from broiled and baked to marinated, sauted, fried, grilled or stuffed.
Speaking of slices, let us now pay tribute to the legendary pizza. So much has been said and
written about this fabled meal with all of the proper food groups gathered in one that we need
to make the claim that Wildwoods serves up the real deal and having a slice on the boardwalk
is a must do while visiting the Wildwoods. Watch out for those seagulls though!

Reunions,
Wildwood Style

In some families, reunions are a regular, perhaps even annual event designed
to help relatives keep in touch. If youre like my big fat Italian clan that gathers
more spontaneously for every event under the sun, then a reunion may be one
more added attraction to keep la familia together. Regardless of the reason, a
family reunion differs from a family holiday gathering in that extended family
members are present. You can learn a lot about your family at a reunion, like
why Uncle Bill always drinks too much or Aunt Marge says inappropriate things
to your spouse. Reunions, as fun as they can be can also mend bonds that had
been broken and answer many questions about your heritage. Whatever the
case, family reunions are often a memorable event but make sure you plan
accordingly. Here are some tips on making your Wildwood Family Reunion a
fun lled, memory making good time.
DEALING WITH DOWNTIME: Make sure to pick up a local maps from the
Greater Wildwood Chamber of Commerce ofce and mark spots like coffee
shops, walking trails, bike trails, points of interest and bookstores for dgety
early risers or other folks who need to get out for a bit. Dont forget, being
together is great but everyone will need a little private time.
The majority of family reunions are organized as a means for members to

keep in touch with one another. This is especially important if your family is
spread across the country, or even the globe. In such a case, it is unlikely that
all of your family members can attend all holiday gatherings. Though you may
keep in touch through email or by phone possibly even Facebook or another
form of social media but honestly, nothing beats a personal gathering.
SET THE STAGE. Youve a bunch of people, now what do you plan to do
with them? Be sure to make arrangements for tents (if an outside reunion),
chairs, parking, decorations, programs, signs, t-shirts, goodie bags and
other reunion-day requirements. This is the time to consult a family reunion
checklist!
Plan a fun and stress-free get-together for your clan with these essential todos.
GETTING STARTED Whom to invite: Everyone, ideally. After all, sometimes
its the random second cousin you never thought would show up who ends
up being the life of the party. If you cant include every branch of the family
tree, the general rule of thumb is that you should decide the parameters
rst whether youll invite rst cousins, second cousins, or beyond then include
everyone that falls under that umbrella.
HOW TO ORGANIZE IT: Pick a point person from each nuclear family so that
wires dont get crossed, and take an informal survey of what people are willing
to spend and when they would like to go. For help in organizing your party
down to nding vendors and designing special T-shirts go to the membership
listing to see who offers great specialty items to enhance your reunion.
When to start planning: Set a date as early as possible, preferably a year in
advance. Families with school-age children generally need to plan around the
school schedule.
WHAT ABOUT A THEME? Creating a theme for a family reunion is a great
way to interest people and make them more likely to attend. It also makes
things more fun when it comes to being imaginative with food, games,
activities, invitations and just about every other aspect of the reunion. Family
history themes are especially popular, as are reunions which celebrate a
very special family members birthday or anniversary, or the familys cultural
heritage (i.e. Hawaiian luau).
Send out invitations one year to 9 months in advance remember, if it is
being held in the summer, the busiest tourist time of the year, hotels, houses
or condos may be booked.
GET SOCIAL Create a facebook page for your family reunion to encourage
participation and to keep your family members up to date on the event of
the year. This will create excitement about the big weekend and by sharing
photos and trade fun stories on your private family page.
How long it should last: For an annual reunion, a weekend will sufce. If
reunions dont occur as regularly, plan a few extra days for those who can stay
longer plan your vacation in the Wildwoods around your reunion.
WHERE TO GO: Ultimately, wherever someone is willing to
host. If that someone is you, take heart in the fact that not
everything has to take place in your living room. Give
yourself a well-deserved break by planning a few
activities at the like volleyball, tennis or a day at
the beach but (see if you need a permit). If you
have more than one option like the Wildwoods
offers and make a list of fun things to do.
ORGANIZING MEALS: If a majority of the guests live within an hours

drive, consider a potluck dinner, if not, the Wildwoods offers so many great
restaurant venues happy to accommodate your families needs. If ordering in,
consider a caterer, or tell the restaurant how many people youre ordering
for. They can assess how much food youll need for a large party. (plan this
at least 6 weeks in advance if using a catering company or local restaurant,
no one likes surprises.)
SAY CHEESE! While many family members will no doubt bring their own
cameras, it helps to also make plans to record the overall event. Whether
you designate a specic relative as the ofcial reunion photographer, or hire
a professional photographer to take photos or videos, you should prepare
a list of the people and events that you want recorded. For spontaneous
moments, purchase a dozen disposable cameras and hand them out to
volunteer guests. Dont forget to collect them at the end of the day!
PRINT IT UP! Create a program that outlines the lineup of scheduled reunion
events to provide to family members as they arrive for the reunion. You may
also want to send this out via email post on your facebook page.
DECORATE FOR THE BIG DAY. The big day is almost here and now its
time to make sure it goes smoothly. Create catchy, easy-to-ready signs to
point arriving guests to registration, parking, and important locations such as
bathrooms. Purchase or make a guest book to collect signatures, addresses,
and other important information, as well as serve as a permanent record of
the reunion. Purchase pre-made name badges, or print your own, to facilitate
mixing and mingling between unacquainted family members. Family tree
wall charts are always a big hit as reunion attendees always want to know
where they t in to the family. Framed photos or printed posters of common
ancestors or past family reunions are also popular. And, if you want to know
what everyone thought of all your reunion planning, print up some evaluation
forms for people to ll out as they leave.
DURING THE BIG DAY. Certicates and Awards. Plan a few games and
create certicates to be passed out to family members. Use your imagination
and try to think up as many categories as possible, so that you can recognize
the largest amount of family members that you can. Possible recognition
categories include these basics:
The oldest and youngest family members
Who traveled the least and greatest distances to attend
Who has attended the most consecutive reunions
Youngest grandparents
Couple with the most children or grandchildren
AFTER THE REUNION Take a deep breath, pat yourself on the back and keep
the fun going. Designate a volunteer or volunteers to create and send out a
post-reunion newsletter with stories, photos and news items from the reunion.
If you collected family information, send along an updated genealogy chart as
well. This is a great way to get people excited about the next reunion, as well
as include less fortunate family members who were not able to attend.
Reunions are just that, a gathering of family or friends where new memories
will be made, new traditions and embracing old customs. Every family has a
story to tell, keep the folklore alive and stories growing.

My human has taken note of the millions of pet obsessed owners around
the world and how geography is no limit to dog friendly travel. In fact, the
Wildwoods welcomes pets and has become a pet friendly town. From the
hotel industry to the city itself pets are increasingly greeted happily upon
arrival of their stay.

to be in Wildwood. Moreys
I, myself; Jack the Dog nds nothing better than to be with my human at all
times. Stuck to her like glue whether it is watching a race with a husky across
Alaska; or just hanging out with other pampered canines from the fancy
shows in Europe. My human is good though and understands me and what
I need to make my life of travel (and hers) a happy one. We both suffer from
wanderlust and while she doesnt hang her head out the car window, she
makes sure to set out for a vacation that is sure to let the wind blow through
our hair, opps I mean fur.
Since I am a wiry little Jack Russell Terrier, she has found people of like mind
across the country that challenge their dogs to run obstacle courses. She
knows that I am happiest when I have a job to do rather than sit back and
lounge in the sun. Did you know that Wildwood has many dog parks and even
provides plastic bag dispensers for the practical necessities such as clean up of
Fidos little presents? There is a ne if you leave one of our packages behind
without cleaning up, just sayin.
And speaking of dog parks, I am a bit if an extravert and love to mix and
mingle. If youre like me, be sure to head over to the tallest re hydrant east
of the Mississippi. Dog Beach which is located at Popular Avenue and the
Boardwalk, next to the convention center. This area designated just for us
canines boost a 25 foot tall re hydrant. Painted bright red the statue made
of recycled parts from an old amusement ride, was donated to the city by the
Morey Organization to mark the new beach, which opened June 14, 2014. It
also pays tribute to the Wildwood Fire Department and two volunteer units,
the Holly Beach Fire Department and Wildwood Fire Department No. 1. If
traveling to Dog Beach you will need to make sure all of Fidos shots are up to
date and he has a license. All dogs must be on a leash as well. Dont forget to

located on the boardwalk, goes to the dogs ending its water park season
in September with a tail-wagging celebration by opening its Raging Waters
Water Park gates to us dogs with 100% of proceeds benetting both the newly
opened Wildwood Dog Beach and New Jersey SPCA. All day fun and in the
evening, water bowls and free dog treats are stationed throughout Raging
Waters Water Park for dogs to recharge as we paddle
around the river adventure or play in the fountain pool. A
variety of activities are scheduled including a doggy swimsuit
competition. A the end of the day we even get to take home
a Moreys Piers souvenir tennis ball.
If youre looking for a place to stay, more and more hotels
are accommodating to the dog loving crowds, no more
rufng it for us. Consider it standard fare if your dog-friendly
accommodation offers the same amenities as the humans,
after all, we want to be surfer dudes, or we may enjoy a day
at the spa too!
What does that mean for my human who likes to travel you
should ask? Well, it makes her job as an owner to a happy
well traveled dog, proof that shes going to have more fun
on vacation. Here she can meet like minded people who
always want to share in the purest of joys on the planet with
mans best friend. In the words of Grouch Marx; Outside of
a dog, a book is a mans best friend, inside of a dog, its too
dark to read. Owning a dog and knowing he is your best
bud means you live in a way thats good for you: exercise,
fresh air, and that constant reminder that fun is really pretty
simple to achieve, especially in the Wildwoods.

Lighthouses are a common sight at the

Jersey Shore and each one of them is
unique! North Wildwood is home to the
fully functioning 17th century Hereford Inlet Lighthouse which doubles as
a museum with guided and self-guided tours. The 57 foot tall lighthouse is
surrounded by over 200 plant varieties creating a lush and beautiful landscape
along the coast. The award winning gardens were established in 1986 and
are free to visit.
North Wildwood Sea Wall

Want to talk a walk on the beach but dont want to get sand in your shoes?
The Sea Wall has got you covered. Originally, the Sea Wall was built in 2005
in an effort to add protection from coastal storms and quickly became a
favorite scenic walkway for locals and visitors alike. The 8,400 foot concrete
path wraps around the North Wildwood and Anglesea beaches and inlet
where you can capture breathtaking sun rises and feel the ocean breeze on
your skin. The Sea Wall is a truly great work of function and form!

In honor of opening a dog friendly beach

in the 2014 season, Wildwood constructed
a 25 foot red re hydrant made from
recycled parts of a retired Moreys Piers
amusement. While Fido soaks up the sun you and the kids can take seles
with the 5,000 pound icon detailed with bones, dog paws and a pesky squirrel
perched on top. Water and dog clean up bags are available so everyone
involved (fur covered or not) can enjoy a day at the beach.

Roberts Ave., & The Boardwalk and
Pacic Ave., & Oak Ave.
The Wildwoods have a long standing musical
history with an emphasis on the Doo Wop era. In
2014 the series of icon walls started appearing
in town. The rst and most appropriate icon
unveiled was none other than Bobby
Rydell who sang Wildwood Days. The
next time youre taking a stroll on the
boardwalk be sure to visit Roberts Ave
and belt out a few lines of Wildwoods
theme song. The second installment of
this project can be found on Pacic and
Oak avenues which pay tribute to the birth of rock and roll. A giant mural
featuring Bill Haleys Original Comets and the hit Rock Around The Clock
are illustrated. A little known fact is that Rock Around The Clock was rst
played for a public audience in Wildwood at the HofBrau just a block away
from the Icon Wall.
The Sundial on the

Boardwalk

At the southern end of the boardwalk is an analemmatic sundial. As far we

know its the only sundial on a New Jersey boardwalk. The cool thing about
this time teller is you act as the gnomon which is the object that casts a
shadow revealing what time it is. Dont worry; you dont need to be a sundial
expert to gure out how to use it. It comes with instructions.
The Wildwoods Vietnam Memorial Wall

Just a block away from the beach is a

240 foot long black granite wall that
displays the 58,913 people lost in the
Vietnam War. Locals and visitors alike
visit the wall to pay homage to lost loved
ones and soldiers year after year.

Pets
Pets are allowed on beaches from October to May, but are not allowed on the Boardwalk at any time. There is a Dog Beach
at Poplar Avenue. Dogs are allowed on the beach at Poplar Avenue from 6am to 10pm. Dogs must be on a leash and owner
must pick up and dispose of droppings.
Sales Tax
All Sales are subject to a 7% sales tax plus an additional local tourism tax of 2% on some tourism related sales.
Sales tax on many retail items is reduced to 3.5% at participating businesses within the Urban Enterprise Zone (UEZ).
Total sales tax imposed by the State of New Jersey on overnight accommodations is 14%.

Watching the weather is part of everyday life for those that live on the coast,
but for a select few it means combing the beach after the storm for treasures
of forgotten bottle glass discarded years and years ago and now resurfacing
on the beach.
In any type of weather usually on a Saturday or Sunday youll see her walking
intently usually with her dog and almost always in her usual pose; eyes downcast
and searching like a hawk looking for its prey. Christie Calveratti paws at a band
of gravel near the low tide mark and spots something interesting. She picks it
up examines her ndings and determines the age of the brown colored glass

an
obsession
but a very
profitable
business
raking
in
over 1 million in sales in 2010. I started to collect it in the 60s when the local
mayor encouraged us to clean up the beach. My mom and I would take a
walk and pick up trash; it was during these walks that I started to pick up glass
because I was afraid someone was going to get a cut on their foot. The glass
was usually so worn down that the edges were dull, but the look, feel, texture
and color of the glass is what I started to prize. Her mom created a section
in her craft room for storing Calverattis glass. My mom is a very organized
woman, she realized that my collection was growing every time we took a
walk, so she went to the hardware store and purchased a bunch of plastic
bins for me, and labeled the bins according to color. Today she has amassed
an entire room in her home with shelving top to bottom and bin after bin of
unique colored sea glass.
It is best to beach comb after a storm, she adds; not that I love tragedy or
violent storms but when the skies turn a little grey and I hear the weather
forecast announcing a NorEaster I am thrilled . The amount of glass that I
nd and the age of some of the pieces are astounding. My favorite nds are
broken china. The broken china tells a story adds Calveratti as does most of
the glass. China can date back to the late 1700s and was usually lost at sea
during erce storms. The perfect storm of 1938 and 1962
leveled many coastal towns from Barnegat Light to Cape
May Point, each town was hit hard. Many of the homes
that were located on the beach were attened and
carried out to sea; it is this China that I often
nd along with depression glass. Calveratti

Funny, the china is still functional.
Sea glass specimens are rated on color, wear, or any embossed or identiable
patterns. Calveratti proves her point by showing me the bottleneck of an old
milk bottle embossed with the word; WaWa. Her collection includes rare
glass colors such as orange, red, blue and turquoise . Red is usually from a
car and can fetch over $250 on Ebay.
Like everything else sea glass is turning out to be less common as more
glass is recycled and plastic bottles are converted into the standard operating
procedures of the times and our economy.
For this beach comber its all about being in tune to nature, the environment
and the thrill of the hunt. Even on windy, cold, damp and rainy days I love
my job, who wouldnt want to take a walk on the beach with a best friend and
nd a treasure?

Here are some ideas on how to entertain the family when moisture

1. Bicycle Rentals - You can ride bikes on the boardwalk or ride along a
designated bicycle path from Anglesea to 26th Avenue and all along Surf
Avenue in the city of Wildwood. Wildwood Crest has a paved beachfront
bike path and North Wildwood has a path that runs from the end of the
Boardwalk at 16th Avenue north to 2nd Avenue.
2. Visit The Wildwoods Historical Museum - A gem in hiding lled to the
brim with interesting artifacts about the Wildwoods and wonderfully talented
hosts to guide you through the museum, offering insight and knowledge
about the area and its founding fathers.
3. Miniature Golf - If you want to play golf, there are excellent golf courses
in the area and of course - miniature golf courses as well.
4. Doo Wop Experience - by foot, car or guided trolley tour view the fun
and frivolous origins of postwar 1950s American in the Wildwoods the
most populated area this side of the Mississippi which features a unique
architectural trove of seaside motels.
5. Walk to the top of the Lighthouse - Constructions began on the
uninhabited barrier island on Nov. 8, 1873 and was completed on March
30, 1874. This wood frame residential style Lighthouse was designed by the
Lighthouse Boards Chief Draftsman, Paul J. Pelz. His Victorian era design is
referred to as Swiss Carpenter Gothic and also Stick Style Hereford Inlet
Lighthouse has a beautiful walk through museum, plus it boast one of the
most amazing gardens on the island.
6. The Whaling Wall - Hand painted by renowned artist Wyland located at
Gareld Avenue and the Boardwalk, in Wildwood is a 220 foot long and 30
foot high mural painted - its a must see on any type of day.

7. Sunset Lake and Turtle Gut Park and Memorial - New Jersey and
Miami Avenues, Wildwood Crest - 522-0221 - Battle of Turtle Gut Inlet was
the only battle fought in Cape May County during American Revolution in
1776.
8. Naval Air Station (NAS) Wildwood - was commissioned on April 1,
1943. The site served as an active dive-bomber squadron training facility
from 1943 to 1945. Aircraft stationed at NAS Wildwood included TBM
Avengers, Douglas Dauntlesses, Vought Corsairs and Curtiss Helldivers.
Forty-two airmen perished while training at NAS Wildwood during World
War II. NAS Wildwood Aviation Museum now boasts over 26 aircraft
displays as well as exhibits of military memorabilia, engines, photographs
and more. Additionally, the Franklin Institute of Philadelphia has provided
NAS Wildwood with a wealth of interactive exhibits that allow visitors to
discover the science of ight. The museum also features a library, food
vending area as well as a recently expanded gift shop. Hangar # 1 was
listed onto the National Register of Historic Places in
September of 1997.
