Characters
Levi
Just like the fun fair he owns, faded by time and travel, but still carries a hint of
mystery, adventure and even a little menace.
Jack
Barely 20. Energetic, dynamic, charming. A contemporary version of his father Levi.
Jonny
Mid 20s. Orphaned as a boy, regarded as simple by some, he found a life by joining
the fairground. Has a touching insight and thoughtfulness.
Rosa
Mid 40s Attractive clairvoyant, mother of Mary. Believes she has the gift of second
sight. Deeply in love with Levi.
Mary
Rosas daughter. 19. Mary is in love with Levis son, Jack. She is bubbly, the girl next
stall. She has a great capacity for love and optimism.
Alice
Daughter of Harvey. Early 20s. Educated, middle class girl with a zest for life that
intoxicates Jack. However, she is more nave than she realizes.
Harvey
Mid-40s. Small time wheeler-dealer with fi nger in a few dodgy pies. Despite the toughman exterior, has little control over his daughter and even less over his enforcer Druid.
Druid
A psychotic enforcer for Harvey, who has a secret unrequited yearning for Alice.
[2nd Cover Jonny & Harvey]
Sally
Late-teens. Slightly subservient and in awe of her best friend Alice.

Jonny
Sorry mate
Druid
Jonny
I dont fi nk so.
Druid
Is that right? Now youve got to ask yourself. Did I fi re five shots
or six? Do you feel lucky, punk?
(Jonny pulls a sawn off shotgun from under the counter and puts it
in Druids face.)
Jonny
Im not the best at adding up, but my calculator says it was six.

She didnt die! Shes swanned off to the Costa Brava with some
perfumed ponce.
Levi
Oh.
(Levi wants to be on his way but Harvey has decided he likes Levi.
We see Alice and Jack fl irting.)
Harvey
Took my daughter too. Alice is back now though here living with
me. Going to college. Shes a clever girl, my Alice, shes got brains,
but she dont use them when it comes to boys. She thinks I worry
too much . . . but I dont want her throwing her life away with
some waste of space. You know what I mean, like that scruff y

(Jack places the cup upside down with the ball on the inverted base of
the cup.)
Jack
Alright then. Very simple. All you have to do is tell me where the
ball is.
Druid
Jack
No, thats the bottom of the cup. Th is is the top. Watch, I put the
ball in the cup, ball in the cup.
(He throws the ball in the cup a few times and lets it roll out. The last
time he clearly lets the ball drop into the cup and places the cup mouth
down again as before, so the ball should be under the cup.)
So, where is the ball?
Druid
Jack
Act One

Jack
Druid
In your hand.
(Jack lifts the cup to reveal the ball underneath.)
Jack
No, its under the cup. The thing is, I cheat. There is a hole in the
cup and I push the ball through the hole.
(Jack holds the cup upright and drops the ball in the cup. It appears
to drop through the hole onto the table.)
I place the ball in my pocket. So where is the ball?
(Jack puts the ball in his pocket and places the cup back on the table.)
Druid
In your pocket.

HE NOTICED ME,

HE NOTICED ME AT THE FAIRGROUND
HIS EYES SO KIND,
I THINK THEYRE BROWN,
HE NOTICED ME,
HE TOOK MY HAND
AND FOR ONCE I FELT SPECIAL,
FLOATING IN AIR,
LIKE A CLOUD, LIKE A PETAL,
FROM THE ROSE . . .

Dont you ever wonder if there is more to life than fairgrounds and
candy floss?
(Jonny considers this for a moment.)
Jonny
No.
Jack
Jonny
Its nice being a goldfi sh on the fair . . . living with all the other
goldfish. Imagine, leaving . . . taken into a home with strangers
. . . Being all alone with no friends, in a dirty bowl . . . Even when
you want to look after him and cant . . . And then you get your
head flushed down the toilet by a tall boy with red hair who calls
you names and kicks you all the while until you wet the bed and
the others all laugh at you . . .
(Jack isnt sure what to say. Jonny recovers from his memories.)
Jack:
Jonny
Your dad will always look after us. We need to stay together. Its
safe here.
Jack
Hes a proud man, my dad, but he cant see when we are beat.
Jonny
Jack

I can help out . . . you can have my savings. There must be forty
pounds in my tin . . . and thats not counting the foreign coins.
Jack
Jonny
Wont it?
Levi
Something will turn up. Well be alright, Jonny boy. Go and get us
a bottle opener.
(Jonny scampers off. Levi watches him go.)
Levi
Jack
Dad . . . ?
Levi
Yes, son?
Jack
Nothing.

holds his hand. Levi shrugs and joins Rosa.)

(Rosa looks over to Jack and Mary.)
Rosa
Levi
Rosa
Mary
Jack
What? Uuurgh! Ive never thought of them like that. Anyway, its
too soon for dad. He still feels guilty about the accident, as though
it was his fault . . .
Mary
The three of you had been doing that ride of death act since you
were a kid. Your mum lost her concentration for a split second . . .
Jack
I know. It was over a year ago but he still wont let us back on the
bikes. I dont understand him.
(Cut back to Levi and Rosa.)
Levi

Jack
Act One
22
Levi
Rosa
He just wants you to move forward and forget the past, hes right,
we all do.
Levi
Rosa
Of course not, me and Lizzie were best friends. We all miss her.
Some days, when I come back in the living wagon, I can still smell
her perfume and I expect she will be standing there smiling, like
she always was. I miss the ordinary little things, you know, talking
about what Jacks up to, worries about the business.
Rosa
I know, Levi. Its the being alone that were frightened of. Even
when Bill used to come back home, drunk and violent, it was the
fear of being alone that made me stay with him. I knew it was
wrong, but life with someone, anyone, was better than life alone.
Course, then he buggered off anyway.
Levi
Id have thrown him off the ground many a time, but you always
said hed change.
Rosa
He was a pig but I still miss him. I even miss his bloody snoring
keeping me awake.
Levi
Bills snoring kept us awake and we were usually on the other side
of the field.
(Rosa gently moves to kiss Levi. He turns away.)
You want everything in a neat little box, your Mary with my Jack,
you with me. Its too soon.
Rosa
I know you have feelings for me. Lizzie has gone, would it be so
wrong?
Levi
Rosa

She leaves Jack to go to her father. Druid is lurking in the shadows.)
Harvey
Alice, your friends are looking for you, asking where you are.
Alice
No they arent.
(Jack watches the argument. Sally is uncomfortable.)
Sally
Looks like rain. It won't spoil the party though will it!

Harvey
Youre not wrong. All that Star Wars nonsense today, thatll never
last.

Kids today are scruff s. No one dresses sharp. Back in the day,
when I was their age. Even though we had nothing, I'd wear a
smart Italian suit, and winkle pickers on me feet.

Rosa
The fi rst boy I ever kissed had braces on his teeth. He kissed me so
hard he damn near stapled our lips together.
Harvey
Do you remember the fi rst kiss, Levi? Or more to the point the
fi rst time you got your leg over?
Levi
Yeah, I was skinny as a rake and I had this long dark curly hair.
Id kinda smile a bit, like this . . . , and my chat up line was . . .
Would you like to see my big dipper?
Druid
I was terrified the fi rst time I had sex . . . Mind you, I was on my

I see that dads want to live their lives again through their sons . . .
Levi
Jonny
I see that sons think their dads are heroes, until those sons start to
be men. Then sons realize . . . their dads arent heroes, theyre just
. . . well, dads. It makes sons feel a bit disappointed for a while . . .
and they dont know how to talk to their dads, just for a while. But
you know what I fi nk . . .
Levi:

Youve made me feel like I belong here. Ill never let any harm

Jonny
My pleasure . . . , Dad.
(Levi sighs with contentment as Jonny scampers off. Rosa returns
with an armful of swag stock.)

I sense something about you! I spent half my life with a man like you.
Harvey

Try living your own life and letting them get on with living theirs.

Harvey
Rosa
I dont know any more. Us show people fi ll our kids heads with
traditions that they dont really want to carry on. At least Jack
made a decision. At least he is capable of showing his feelings.
Harvey
Rosa
Harvey
For what its worth, Alice told me that when she fi rst met you . . .
that you told her things about, her, our family. She thinks you
have some . . . I dont know, some sixth sense.
Rosa
Does she?
Harvey
Act Two
62
Jack
Youre beautiful.
Alice
Do you tell that to all the girls you run away with? I cant believe
we actually ran away!
Jack
Alice
Jack
No, just facing up to reality. I love you. Ive never told anyone that
before. Well, at least not meant it before. Look the fair is up here
this week. Lets go back, put it right with my dad, then tell your
dad. Its time to do the right thing . . .
ON SATURDAY NIGHTS,
IF YOU FEEL ALRIGHT,
WELL GO TO THE PICTURES
WHEN ITS DARK
Jack
IF I WERE A PLUMBER,
WOULD YOU LOVE ME?
Alice
IF I WERE WAITRESS?
Jack
ID LOVE YOU.
COULD YOU PICTURE US
ON A NUMBER NINE BUS
TO CANNING TOWN
WE TWO
JUST ME AND YOU.
(Instrumental. Dance break.)
Both
BUT OH WE COULD HAVE A LARK, A LARK,
PICNICKING IN THE PARK, THE PARK,
ON SATURDAY NIGHTS IF YOU FEEL ALRIGHT
WELL GO TO THE PICTURES
WHEN ITS DARK,
Alice
YES WE COULD WALK OUR WALKS TOGETHER,
OR WE COULD R AISE A FAMILY
Jack
WHEN I COME HOME FROM WORK ,
ILL CHANGE ME SHIRT,
AND WELL SIT BY THE FIRE-SIDE FOR TEA
Both
JUST YOU AND ME.
63
Act Two
64
The daft thing is, Jonny, I still love him. You see, I know hell
leave his fancy bit of stuff and come back to the fair, back to me
. . . and though I know I shouldnt, I know Ill take him back. He
thinks theres another world out there, thats better than ours . . .
but nothings better than this . . . our travelling life. You know
that, dont you, Jonny? Ive seen whats out there. Every week, in
every different town we visit, I see the same look in them townies
eyes. They come to us, to escape from their dreary world. They
think there must be something better than what theyve got . . . and
they come to us to fi nd it. So, why would we want to join them?
Oh no, Jonny, Ive seen the real world from my caravan window.
They can keep it. You wouldnt want a mortgage and a real job
would you, Jonny?
(Jonny most certainly would not.)
Mary
No, and neither does Jack. My mam says he has to fi nd out for
himself and when he does hell be back. Hell come home and Ill
be waiting for him.
Jonny
Mary
Jonny
Cos I seen that Druid in town. Hes been here all week. Looking
and waiting. He hurt me, Mary.
Mary
He followed us up here?
(Jack enters alone, carrying a suitcase. A couple of Workers see him
and greet him warmly, glad that he is back.)
Jack
Jonny
65
(Shouting.) Nothing!
(Jonny runs away. Jack sees Mary. She hides her joy in order to
exact full value from the moment.)
Mary
Got over your little adventure, have you? I suppose you think you
can just walk in here and pick up where you left off do you?
Jack
Im sorry.
Mary
Sorry is it?
Jack
Jack
(To Mary.) I dont want to hurt you, but its time you knew the
truth. Th is is my home as well and Ive brought Alice home with
me. Will you understand? Will you be alright?
Mary
Of course . . . Ill be fi ne . . . And you can scrape him off the floor
when he dies on that bloody motorbike!
Levi

(Jack and Alice make a run for it. Mary goes for Jack again and
Levi grabs her. Levi sings to Mary.)
Levi
I KNOW YOURE CAUGHT UP IN A WEB OF LIES,
YOU NEVER SEE THE TRUTH BEHIND HIS EYES,
JUST LIKE A PUPPET ON A STRING,
HE CALLS THE TUNE, YOU DANCE AND SING,
BUT YOU LOVE HIM, YES YOU LOVE HIM,
DOES HE LOVE YOU?
(Fairground Workers sing at Alice and hurl abuse at Jack. They
have cleared the stage by last beat of the song.)
All

heard. The stage is empty apart from Levi, Jack and Alice.
Harvey enters with Druid and Heavies.)

As Druid continues to wrestle with Jonny the gun goes off. Rosa,
Mary and Fairground Workers come running back.
Harvey, Jack and Alice all fall to the fl oor. Jonny stumbles away

So that was my tale . . . I knew how they would all play their
parts. I just didnt realise how I would play mine. Mary moved
away and met someone else. Hes not Jack but he loves her and
Im expecting my first grandchild soon. Levi adopted Jonny and
theyre still travelling. If he travels far enough hell fi nd happiness.
Poor Jack, he never did get to ride in The Wall Of Death, again.
You know, Im sure hes with them, whenever they ride those damn
motor-bikes . . .
