Arutela is an historic monument that belongs to UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE. It is situated
near Calimanesti, on the left banck of the Olt River, located in a beautiful area, in north can be seen the
Cozia Mountain and uplands of the river are boredered by versants or forest. As one of the first tourist
destinations in Valcea has innumerable attractions, ensuring that visitors with any interest will find
something to keep them entertained on their tryp. These ruins were once a roman camp that was built
between 137-138 by the order of Titus Flavius, who served Hadrian, Roman Emperor. This is a
fascinating location filled with cultural wonders because according to the local legend this settlemnt
belonged to a very powerful witch, so this place offers to tourists two complety different stories.

One day, a wizard came in these lovely helds and took them over. He was very cruel and strong, nobody
could face him.
The camp of Arutela became his home. Under the ruins he built a magical maze that linked our world
with the hell.
The wizard told the people that if they passed the maze they could ask him anything but for hundreds of
years nobody passed it.
After three hundred years an ordinary shepherd, parentless from the age of 7, went to the wizard and told
him that if he passed the maze, the wizard would stop hurting all the others, and, in addition to this, he
would leave the city.The wizard agreed as he was quite sure that the poor shepherd had no chance to get
through the maze.
He took with him in the maze: a wodden whistle, his fathers haunting knife, flints and some mamaliga.
He entered the maze and began his journey.It was very dark so he used his flints to put on a fire.Suddenly
he saw a rope on the wall so he burnt it.The whole way was now enlightened.After severals hours of
going in circles he thought of God: in 6 days he made the Earth and than, one day he stood and looked
around.So he lied on the ground and looked around. He saw some signes on the walls, it was a musical
score. He took his whistle from the bag and began to sing the tune. Suddenly, a secret passage opened. He
entered in that chamber and as he walked 3 steps the door closed and in a few seconds, it dissapeared. He
climbed some stairs and there he discovered the Gate,a portal to hell. The souls of the ones that didn't pass
the maze had been sent to hell.
Near the Gate there was a book, it was the book that was giving power to the wizard. Than, the shepherd
rememberd a story that his mother told him when he was very young. A brave hero killed a witch by
cutting her spell book with a hot knife. So he took off his coat, burned it with with the flints ant put his
knife there for a few minutes. After the knife had been extremely hot he stabbed the book with it. A loud
noise was heard, the secret door opened and he ran back in the maze. There he saw a little light, it was a
glow-worm and that meant that the exit was near. He followed the little insect to the exit where the
wizard, drained of power, was waiting for him.
I never thought someone would get through this maze. Im impressed, I have to admit.. You, a simple
shepherd just made me lose my powers.. Interesting, but, you know, my evil mind took into consideration
even this fact. The spells that I made until now will stay forever,and guess what. You won this time, but
because of you, little mediocre piece of hell, here, at Arutela, will never ever be peace again. Everything
what you see will become a bloody prison, people will die and so will you , the villagers. You will all die
surrounded by terror. Pleased with this ??

And so it was.. The time erased the bones of hundreds of prisoners who died here but kept these ruins.
Strange how a shepherd changed the destin of so many people and all that he ever wanted was to release
them from the powers of the wizard.
