The rise of Indonesias middle class is one of the defining stories of the 21st Century. From modern
retail stores to a flux of new financial services products to the rise of new urban centers, the middle
class will redefine the nation and its business landscape.
Shoeb Kagda
Indonesians are also savvy with digital platforms and internet penetration is rising rapidly. Over the past
two years, internet usage has risen by almost 40 percent to reach 40 million users. Social media and
chat take up the bulk of the activity on line but e-commerce is predicted to grow with on-line shopping
and e-banking already visible.
With these changes, brands that have built trust and reputation will do well. Across most product
categories, Indonesians are not only faithful to brands but also show a strong preference for local
brands and to those corporations that have had a long presence in the country
Politics of Change
Not only will the middle class consume more of just about everything, it will also define politics and how
it evolves going forward. Politicians can no longer make campaign promises and revert back to their
old ways when in office. Today, they must deliver higher quality public goods be they better roads,
better schools, better hospitals and better homes
To do so, Indonesia has its work cut out. It needs to upgrade its education system; build more and
better infrastructure; promote entrepreneurship and innovation; improve and deepen financial
inclusions; cut red tape and improve its civil service; enhance its regulatory environment; and create
new pockets of wealth
