After a 13-month long adventure, missing dog Patch has

been returned to his relieved - and surprised Bacchus
Marsh family.
At the ripe old age of 11, little Patch went missing from
Melton in November 2013, breaking the heart of his 12
year-old owner Darcy who started school at Bacchus
Marsh Grammar this year.
Its his little dog and theyve grown up together, said
Darcys mum Karen.
After Patch went missing, the family spent two months
putting up posters, doing letterbox drops of fliers, and
calling the pound and the local councils and the vet
trying to find him but no luck.
You can imagine how upset we were when he left.
It was the not knowing that kills you, Id wonder where
he is, Id wonder what hes doing, Id wonder who hes
with, Id wonder if hes alive.
But last month, Karen received a call from the pound.
It didnt even click - I wondered why she was phoning
me.
She said she had our little dog and my first question was
- alive? She asked would we like him back and I said of
course wed like him back!
We were crying, it was very exciting.
But some quick preparations had to be made for Patchs
return.
We had to go and buy a new bed, and a new ball, and a
new leash Id thrown everything out.
Darcy is rapt to have his dog back.
He put it on Instagram and all his friends were
messaging him, and then the mums were texting me
saying what an incredible story its been.
Patch appeared to have been well-cared for during his
adventure, but Karen pointed out that had he not been
microchipped then he never would have found his way
back home.
I think this is a great story to illustrate the importance to
pet owners of having your pet micro chipped.

The Moorabool Shires summer round of community grants

are now open and local community groups or people holding

Community grants of up to $5000 are available for projects
which demonstrate they strengthen a community, including
capital improvements, community programs, activities or
initiatives.
Grants of up to $3000 are available for community art
projects, publications, exhibitions, performances and other
creative initiatives.
Event grants of up to $3000 will be awarded to events that
best showcase local talent, provide public entertainment,
foster community participation, connectedness and diversity.
Moorabool Shire mayor Paul Tatchell said: Council proudly
supports the wonderful contribution that our not-forprofit community groups provide to their local and wider
communities and this is a fantastic way for groups to receive
some cash to help them continue to serve our community.
Program guidelines, application forms and further
information are available at moorabool.vic.gov.au or by
contacting Moorabool Shire on 5366 7100.

With school commencing for the

2015 year, Moorabool Shire is reminding all motorists and pedestrians to abide by rules around
schools and school crossings.
Moorabool Shire mayor Paul
Tatchell said council was developing an information sheet
for drivers about where to park
and the dos and donts around
schools.
Drivers need to be aware of
their obligations at school crossings, including going the correct
speed limit and waiting until the
crossing is completely clear before driving through it, Cr Tatchell said.
Council employs 19 school
crossing supervisors who do a
fantastic job, but all drivers and
pedestrians are responsible for
ensuring the crossing supervisors can undertake their job safely to ensure everyones safety.
He said drivers also needed
to abide by 40kph speed limits
around schools.
Some roads in Moorabool have
40kph speed limits 24 hours a
day, seven days a week, while
some are 40kph just in school
times.
He said: The limits are in place
to ensure our children are safe.
I hope all Moorabool children
heading to school for 2015 stay
safe and have a happy start to the
year.

CAFS face
harsh cuts
MOORABOOL
residents
experiencing financial distress will have their access to
financial counselling scaled
back because of Federal Government cutbacks.

Last year the Abbott governments first budget dealt

a massive blow to the Department of Social Services
(DSS), delivering cuts of
$240 million to services provided to Australias most
vulnerable.

The ripple effects of these

cuts are now being felt across
Moorabool, with community service organisations
unable to fully deliver critical services to those in need.
Child and Family Services
(CAFS) Ballarat, which manages CAFS Bacchus Marsh,
will lose $100,000 from their
counselling budget.

Arsonist has no memory of attack

By Jessica Howard
Gordon General Store owners, John and Jan Spiteri will
have to wait another three
months in order to make a
fresh court bid to seek justice
against the arsonist of their
store.
The couple, alongside their
daughter, appeared in the
body of the Sunshine Magistrate Court on Tuesday February 3, as 67-year-old Robert Wallace pleaded guilty to
a single charge of criminal
damage by fire.
On the evening of October
9 2014, two local bystanders
were leaving the Gordon
pub when they noticed the
front of the store in flames.
Forensic officers attended
the scene and downloaded
the stores CCTV footage,
where Mr and Mrs Spiteris
daughter was able to iden-

tify the culprit as Robert

Wallace, her father-in-law up
until just three months prior.
The Spiteris supplied the
court with a victim impact
statement, which stated that
although the relationship
between Ms Spiteri and Mr
Wallaces son had ended,
there was no hostility and
they had even attended
dinner together with their
children one day before the
incident.
The Spiteris hoped to sue
for up to $3,000, including
$1,500 for damages and cost
of repairs and $1,500 in loss
of earnings. The damage
included a burnt front door,
burnt mats and burns to
the front of the shop, with a
strong smell of smoke forcing the family to close the
shop for 24 hours.
During the hearing, Mr

Wallaces solicitor asked

Magistrate Richard Pithouse
for a further adjournment
in order to finalise a psychiatric analysis, as Wallace
had yet to recall the incident
whatsoever.
With no drugs or alcohol
involved, there is a difficulty
to this plea as his behaviour
has come entirely out of left
field, the solicitor said.
We need to work out the
reason why he cannot recall
the incident, as whether he
has blocked it out, we just
dont know.
Magistrate Pithouse agreed
to an adjournment, stating
that they needed to pinpoint
the reason why he attacked
a property of someone he
was related to by marriage.
Wallace will reappear in the
Sunshine Magistrates Court
on May 6.

Rates to be capped at inflation

By Kate Taylor
The State Government has
responded to Moorabool
Shire Council Mayor Paul
Tatchells criticism of its rate
capping policy, claiming it
will give residents a fair go
with their rates bill.
Mayor Tatchell said (MN
edition 27 Jan) that rate capping is an old idea proven to
leave councils unable to afford to maintain infrastructure, labelling the policy as
a great headline and a vote
winner but one that does
not work.
As we committed before
the election, the Andrews
Labor Government will require all councils to cap their

rate increases at inflation,

from 2016-17, said a government spokesperson.
Its a policy we took to the
election, and its a policy that
will give the ratepayers of
Moorabool a fair go.
Under Labor, any council
proposing an increase above
inflation will need to explain
itself - not an unreasonable
ask. As the representatives
of the local community,
councillors should be able
to justify their budgets to
ratepayers. They should
be able to show that their
spending is of benefit to the
community.
Most recently, Moorabool
Shire Council raised rates by
five per cent. For local fami-

lies struggling to make ends

meet, its only fair that their
council explain where that
increase will go. Just as they
responsibly manage their
own household budgets,
residents rightfully expect
their council to do the same.
The Labor Government
will keep working with
stakeholders and welcomes
the contribution of local
councils as part of the policy
development process.
The Andrews Labor Government is committed to
ensuring councils across the
state are more accountable,
more transparent and more
responsible in how they
spend ratepayer funds, the
spokesperson concluded.

Fortnightly face to face

Having a meeting with

Moorabool Shire Councils
Mayor is as simple as turning up to the Lerderderg
Library.
Mayor Paul Tatchell is making himself available for
walk-up one-on-one consultations at the Lerderderg Library on the second
and fourth Thursdays of
each month without an
appointment.
Youll find Im an approachable person; as are the
other Councillors for that
matter. I encourage people
to simply walk up and chat
to me at these specially ar-

ranged one-on-one sessions

about council matters.
Theres no need to make an
appointment, just call in. If I
dont have an answer for you
on the spot, Ill bring back an
answer to you the next time
round, he said.
Mayor Tatchell said he is
already available by phone,
email and on social media,
but that some residents said
they wanted to express their
concerns about issues and
opportunities in their community personally, informally and in private.
Experience has shown that
sometimes meeting oneon-one is the preferred way
for people to express what

theyre feeling.
Its a great opportunity to
listen and understand where
the community is coming
from, as well as an opportunity for me to personally
explain councils position,
guide them on council process or simply provide a
response to whats on their
mind.
He said he hoped that by
making a public commitment to be available at a set
time and place, and making
the process as simple and
informal as possible, that
more people in the community will participate in local
government issues.
Mayor Tatchell reminded

residents that expressing

their point of view is already
encouraged via existing
community
consultation
methods such as councils
online community consultation process www.have
yoursaymoorabool.com.au.
He said there are more
initiatives coming to enhance councils community
consultation.
Watch this space! As we
progress our digital strategy,
more dialogue via social media will be possible. In the
meantime, come and see me
at the library in Main St Bacchus Marsh at 6pm on February 12 Ill leave a light on
out the front!

Moorabool now has a Youth

Charter.
The document, which sets
out ways in which council
will engage with young
people about issues that affect them, was adopted at
the Wednesday 4 February
council meeting.
The Charter was driven by
the Youth Action Group,
made up of 14 people aged
from 12-23 years old who
work, live and study in the
shire.
Year Seven student and
YAG
member
Thomas
Stoian, from Myrniong, told
the meeting that the group
consulted extensively during the development of the
charter.
We spoke face-to-face with
160 young people, and they
liked it, he told the meeting.
A report prepared by council officers recommended
the adoption of the charter, which lay on the table
since the December council
meeting.
The draft Youth Charter is
a simple user friendly document that promotes a clear
platform for Council and
young people to ensure engagement opportunities on
key issues. The young people involved in the development of the Charter believe
the document provides a
clear communication platform for Council and young
people which will promote
positive outcomes for young
people in the community,
the report stated.
The motion was moved by
East Ward Councillor Tonia
Dudzik and seconded by
fellow East Ward Councillor
David Edwards.

a road realignment project
near Moorabool River were
reburied last week.

The culturally important

artefacts were found and recovered by The Wathaurung
community and Alpha Archeology on Yendon Egerton
Rd. The artefacts included

13 stone flaked tools made

from quartz, quartzite and
silcrete.

We perform a smoking ceremony as a way of healing

the land.

Wathaurung
Aboriginal
Corporation
traditional
owner Tammy Gilson said:

The process of returning

Representatives of The
Wathaurung
community
conducted a smoking ceremony to return the artefacts
to the land on January 29.

The smoke is used to

cleanse the site, the artefacts
and our bodies. Traditional
smoking ceremonies have
been performed by our old
people for thousands of
years, Ms Gilson said.

those artefacts to the land

involved digging a hole and
placing the artefacts back
in a container, followed by
a smoking ceremony. The
smoke helped to remove
all negative energies so the
artefacts and the people presented at the ceremony were
detached and protected
from negative energies.

The Billy
Boils Again!

By Jane Gardner
Out for a weekend drive last
year, former Werribee couple Roseann Urut and Nigel
Day pulled off the highway
to visit the small town of
Gordon. Before they knew
it, theyd moved in and reopened the once popular
Billy Boils Caf. Its something Roseann, a qualified
a-la-carte chef, has always
wanted to do. We loved it
the minute we saw it, says
Roseann, speaking of both
the caf and Gordon. Its
close to Melbourne, Daylesford and Ballarat and theres
lots to do locally as well.
Nigels first love is music,
continues Roseann. So as
well as wanting to provide
something different on our
menu, we hope to invite local musicians to come and
play as well. Depending on
the community, we may
eventually look at opening
Friday or Saturday nights
too.
With help from Rosannes

brother Hank and sister

Mery, the couple officially
opened The Billy at the
end of January where they
shared a big, silver, billy
cake, expertly made by Clare
Bear Sweets, with their first
customers.
We plan to have a lighter
menu through the week,
with something a bit fuller
on the weekends, explains
Roseann. We also hope
to use fresh, local produce
where we can. Our bread
comes from the Red Beard
Bakery in Trentham, our
coffee from the Bean Barn
in Ballarat and our meat
from Salvatores butcher in
Ballan.
Along with the more traditional menu items such as:
bacon and eggs, coffee and
scones, herb chicken wraps,
or house made mushroom
soup, customers will also
find something a bit different. In recognition of Roseanns Turkish background,
the caf also serves pogaca
(pronounced; poh-cha) a

Turkish savoury pastry

along with zucchini flower
and ricotta muffins.
If you visit The Billy, as well
as browsing the book shelves
or looking at the old colonial dcor, you might like to
check out the old fashioned
cash register thats still in
working ka-ching order.
Roseann will tell you that,
Nigel found it on eBay and
when he went to pick it up
from the lady in Melbourne,
she told him her father lives
in Gordon! Some might say
its a good omen. Though if
you visit The Billy and meet
Nigel and Roseann, youll
soon realise that, omens
aside, their warm and
friendly hospitality will go
a long way towards making
their new venture a great
success!
The Billy is open 9.00am
5.00pm Wednesday to Sunday. For more information

Two new events have received a financial leg-up
from
Moorabool
Shire
Council.
Councillors voted to hand
out a total of $11,000 this
financial year, $33,000 over
three years, based on an
assessment of funding applications in a report put to
the Wednesday 4 February
council meeting.
The Blackwood Festival of
Music and Culture, which
was run as a pilot in November last year by the Blackwood Academy & Review
Inc at Blackwood Recreation
Reserve, received a total of
$22,500 - $7500 each year for
three years.
The festival committee,
led by its secretary Janet
Dear planned to attract folk
music lovers to an annual
three-day music festival in
November, said the report.
The Sweet Wine festival

was also successful, receiving a total of $10,500 - $3500

per year for three years.
It is the concept of Moorabool Shire resident Justin
Carroll in conjunction with
the Rotary Club of Ballan
and District, with assistance
from Ballan Community
House, Ballan Autumn Festival and the wine and food
industry, the report said.
It aims to showcase local
wine and food producers
and attract consumers of
sweet wines from the surrounding regions and metropolitan Melbourne. The
event will be held annually
at a date to be set during the
off-peak tourism event period - April to October.
The funding, which comes
under the new Tourism
Event Grants Program, focuses on supporting new
events or concepts for events
that could in the future develop into significant generators of visitation from

outside the region.

Councils Business Development Manager Peter
Forbes explained that the
grants are aimed at providing event committees with
funding over three years to
allow an event time to grow
and develop its own sustainable sponsorship so it can
stand on its own two feet in
its fourth year.
Councillor Sullivan asked
how the expectation of each
event will be assessed, given
that they are only new and
the funding is for three
years.
They have to provide a
report every year as to how
they are going, if they disband the event or it does
not come to fruition, then
the money comes back, Mr
Forbes told the meeting.
A total of $8900 will be allocated in a second round
of funding which will be
advertised by council in the
coming months.

Road to gain public access

By Kate Taylor
A controversial section of
road at Myrniong covered
by an agricultural license
may soon be re-opened for
public access.
The portion of Lohs Lane,
surrounded by rural properties and covered by the
license, was the subject of
a petition containing 96
signatures - and supported
by letters from three emer-

gency services presented

at the December 2014 council
meeting and asking for the
license to be cancelled.
A subsequent report prepared by council officers and
presented to the Wednesday
4 February council meeting
recommended that council
write to the Minister for Environment, in charge of the
Department of Environment
and Primary Industries
which is the authority for

the license, requesting the

cancellation of the license so
the land can be re-opened
for public access.
Resident
Olivia
Fisher
spoke at last weeks meeting, saying that no grazing
occurs on the land so there
is no need for the license
which sees part of the land
fenced off with a gate, making it appear that the road
ends but it does not, as her
house is situated past it.

I support the cancellation

of the license and the first
reason is safety. CFA says it is
not up to proper standards.
Our home is land-locked
and I have three young children, this is a common sense
approach the public has
spoken, do the right thing.
Scott Fisher also spoke to
the motion.
It is in the public interest.
In the past, emergency ser-

vices cant find us. Safety is

my priority and should be
yours too.
Councils Manager of Infrastructure Phil Jeffrey said
that cancelling the license
would mean that the license holder would have to
remove the gate and fences
across the road, then council
would maintain it as a public
road.
He said that the cost would

be minimal as it is the lowest

category of road and it is in
good condition.
A sign at the fence may be
removed by DEPI if required
and the road open to public
traffic.
The motion was moved by
East Ward Councillor Allan
Comrie and seconded by
East Ward Councillor Tonia
Dudzik.

Indigenous
policy flagged
By Kate Taylor
The Aboriginal flag will fly
alongside the Australian,
Victorian and Moorabool
flags at council offices in
Moorabool.
A statement of acknowledgement of the traditional
owners of the land will also
be read at the commencement of all council meetings,
public meetings organised
by council officers, and public events.
The new policy was adopted at the Wednesday 4 February council meeting.
The motion, put forward by
East Ward Councillor Tonia
Dudzik and seconded by
East Ward Councillor John
Spain, did however see debate among the councillors.
I didnt think I would have
to debate this, Cr Dudzik
said.
She said that indigenous
people were the first people
here and that flying the flag
is a matter of respect.
We have a considerable
indigenous population and
they would like their flag
flown. Its the right thing to
do.
West Ward Councillor Tom
Sullivan voted against the
motion, saying his objection
was not about respect but
that the acknowledgement
seemed tokenistic and
that flying the flag every day
would make it less special
than if it was flown only
during occasions such as
NAIDOC Week.

Coimadai PS (L-R) Sienna and Isabella.

The Australian Aboriginal Flag was designed by artist

Harold Thomas and first flown in South Australia, on
National Aborigines Day, 12 July 1971. It became the
official flag for the Aboriginal Tent Embassy in
Canberra after it was first flown there in 1972. Since
then, it has become a widely recognised symbol of
the unity and identity of Aboriginal people.
After a period of public consultation, in July 1995 the
Aboriginal flag was proclaimed a Flag of Australia
under the Flags Act 1953.
The meanings of the three colours in the flag, as
stated by Harold Thomas, are:
Black represents the Aboriginal people of Australia
Yellow circle represents the Sun, the giver of life
and protector
Red represents the red earth, the red ochre used in
ceremonies and Aboriginal peoples spiritual
relation to the land.
It is really about feel-good
stuff, that I dont perceive we
should be doing because it
is tokenistic. Currently we
have an inclusive opening to
our meetings the people
of Moorabool - we include
not just one but everybody. It
could be a way of getting rid
of this opening.
When we have a symbolic
occasion, then fly the flag
we dont have Christmas
every day!
Pat Toohey asked if the
wording of the policy could
be changed to say that council can acknowledge traditional owners, instead of
council will acknowledge
the traditional owners.
No, Cr Dudzik replied.
Cr Spain went on to explain
that being a council policy,
the wording should be more
definite.
Mayor Paul Tatchell said
that the flag is for special
occasions.

The most important thing

is we have a policy. A policy
can then be developed. I do
accept some of the arguments that Tom Sullivan
makes. I urge councillors
that this is a first step in
developing a policy toward
recognition. I ask Crs. Tonia
Dudzik and John Spain to
reconsider the change and
get this policy in to move
forward.
However Cr Dudzik refused the change.
This is way too important
to indigenous people. I am
talking over 100 people have
asked for council to fly the
flag. I stand by the motion I
moved in the agenda.
The motion was first moved
at the December council
meeting, where it was voted
to be put out for public exhibition for two months,
during which time council
received five responses from
the public.

Court in action
By Jessica Howard
A 67-year-old Long Forest
resident faced possible jail
time last Friday after pleading guilty to a case involving insurance fraud of over
$30,000.
Roger Buchannan entered
the Bacchus Marsh Magistrates Court on February 6
with a plea of guilty to one
charge of obtaining property by deception and one
charge of filing a fake police
report.
Mr Buchannan reported a
burglary in his Long Forest
home to the Bacchus Marsh
police station in November
2011, stating that two quad
bikes had allegedly been
stolen from his shed. The accused then went on to file an
insurance claim of $30,650,
which was soon settled, the
court heard.

However in July 2014, a

search warrant was conducted and Mr Buchannan
admitted to filing a fraudulent insurance claim. The defendant confessed to giving
the bikes to his son before
filing the claim, and the two
bikes were then located on
his sons property.
Mr Buchannans defence
lawyer stated that during the time of the offence
the 64-year-olds marriage
was on the rocks, and the
money was supposedly his
last attempt to save his relationship with his wife. It was
also noted that Mr Buchannan struggles with Type 2
Diabetes, and recently lost
his job as a truck driver after
his license was suspended
due to a loss of demerit
points.
Magistrate Peter Reardon
said that although these

factors were in no way an

excuse for Mr Buchannans
behaviour, he would take
them, along side his cooperation with the police, into
consideration.
I initially thought of prison
time for you sir, as these are
very serious offences. It is a
breach of trust in the sense
that insurance companies
work on a system of honesty, he said.
Mr Buchannan received a
community corrections order for a period of 12 months,
including 150 hours of unpaid community work, and
was convicted of all offences.

Meanwhile, four out of five

applications for the removal
of an alcohol interlock were
successfully passed. An
interlock is an electronic
breath-testing device, which

is wired into the ignition of

a vehicle and requires the
driver to blow an alcohol
free breath before the vehicle
will start.

However, one Bacchus

Marsh resident wasnt so
lucky, after his application
was denied due to a lack of
evidence. The magistrate
noted that the driver had
failed to successfully pass
the breath-test four times in
a period of six months, in
which the defendant stated
that this was due to chainsmoking and eating too
many icy-poles. The man
believed the two factors
enabled the device to think
he had been drinking; however, Magistrate Reardon
stated that with absolutely
no evidence he would have
to deny the application.

Support for
fire-fighters
balloons

By Kate Taylor

Painting the town red in

support of local firefighters
is what one upcoming charity event is all about.
National Red Balloon Day,
held annually on 28 February, is organised by a 100
per cent not-for-profit organisation as a way for all
Australians to give praise
and thanks to the nations
firefighters.
On 28 February 2015, we
aim to be much bigger than
last year and have more of
the Australian public show
their support to our courageous men and women by
flying a red balloon from
their mailbox, fence, workplace etc as a simple measure

to say Thank You Fireys. A

simple measure to show our
support and appreciation
for their tireless efforts,
said National Red Balloon
Days spokesperson Jody
Hardiman.
Together with the sale
of Thank You Firies Red
Balloons, and other merchandise which is available
through our website, www.
nationalredballoonday.org,
we hope to not only thank
our fire fighting heroes, but
to assist in raising funds.
All profits from this fund
raising event will go directly
back to the state from which
the item/s is purchased.
You can also donate directly
through our website.

Alternative Farming Expo

New Principal Gabrielle Driscoll on her first day at St Brigids PS. Photo Helen Tatchell

Principal open to change

ST Brigids Primary Schools

new principal Gabrielle
Driscoll says people who
work in education need to
embrace change.
Theres one constant in
education: nothing stays
the same and you have to be
open to change, Ms Driscoll
said.
Ms Driscoll is no stranger
to change, moving from her
nine-year role as principal
of St Margarets Primary

School in East Geelong to

Ballan to replace St Brigids
retired
principal
Peter

Ballan is a lovely community and people are very
welcoming. Theres a very
strong community spirit,
she said.
In smaller schools theres
both an opportunity and
responsibility
to
build

Originally from St Arnaud,

Ms Driscoll went to boarding school and college in Ballarat and began her teaching
career there.
She said this year was St

opportunity to acknowledge
the wonderful things that
are happening and it gives
us a springboard to say what

Camel farming and chainsaw carving are just some of

the alternative examples of
farming that will be showcased at the 24th annual Seymour Alternative Farming

Held over three days from
February 20, the expo presents visitors with a chance
to learn about emerging
farming trends, whilst seeing the latest in farm machinery and implements and
enjoying the many delights
that a rural lifestyle can
offer.
Organisers expect an attendance of about 40,000
people to visit the expo site
and browse the offerings of
more than 500 exhibitions.
Expo founder, Colin Stray
said the showcase is a proud
celebration of what regional
Victoria is all about.
[Whilst] theres a core focus on agriculture, it also
embraces a host of attractions and entertainment for
the whole family, including
the best in local food and

This changes everything

our hotter future
I must say reading Richard Flanagans The Narrow
Road to the Deep North
(Vintage Books, Sydney
2013) was not all that easy.
Chapter after chapter Richard Flanagan invites you to
stay with him as he outlines
in detail the horrors of the
Australian prisoners of war
in the Japanese POW camp
on the Thai Burma death
railway. There is a film
showing in certain theatres
currently called Night Will
Fall. It is a documentary
of what took place in 1945
when Allied soldiers, newly
trained as camera operators,
were sent into Germany
and Poland to record what
they found during the liberation of camps such as
Bergen-Belsen, Dachau and

Auschwitz. The soldiers

were scarcely able to believe
what they saw and now after 70 years the stories and
pictures are being shared
once again. And again it is
not easy viewing. This is a
rather lengthy introduction
to this weeks opinion piece
and in fact an introduction
to the next few weeks opinion pieces. Both The Narrow
Road to the Deep North
and Night Will Fall are confronting and yet we buy the
book and see the film. So we
can take confronting news.
It appears we are capable of
facing such fearsome issues
that reflect our past if we
turn our minds to it.
But what about the future?
Are we able to stay and read
about the future as predicted

by our scientists? Can we

turn our minds to it? Can we
read and act on our reading
so we, at least, can start to do
something about it? And this
reading is not about a certain
war or country but about the
whole planet.
I know I have written of this
in the past and will apologise in advance for repeating
myself. I do this because this
year is yet another year when
the United Nations is meeting to decide on our planets
future and the latest science
is strongly indicating that
if we do not begin to turn
things around by 2017 then
it is too late. As twenty-one
winners of the prestigious
Blue Planet Prize a group
that includes James Hansen,
former director of NASAs

Goddard Institute wrote,

In the face of an absolutely
unprecedented emergency,
society has no choice but to
take dramatic action to avert
a collapse of civilization.
Either we will change our
ways and build an entirely
new kind of global society,
or they will be changed for
us (Quoted in Naomi Klein,
This Changes Everything
(Allen Lane Australia 2014)
this important work will
be quoted extensively in this
column over the next few
weeks might I suggest you
try to obtain a copy of this
book.
So at the expense of repeating myself I will again
outline just what a warmer
world will look like. For
this picture I am indebted

to Mark Lynas, Six Degrees.

Our Future on a Hotter
Planet (Harper Perennial
London 2008). What would
the world look like when it
is two degrees warmer and
this, dont forget, is acceptable according to our governments. Hence this week I
will begin outlining what a 2
degree warmer world would
look like.
As the climate warms by
2 degrees southern China
will experience more flooding while it will also take
longer for the monsoon rains
to reach the north severely
threatening the availability
of water in such centres as
Beijing and Tainjin. China
will begin to struggle to feed
itself.
With a rise of 2 degrees the

oceans will become more

acidic as they absorb more
carbon dioxide and this
will affect all life forms in
the ocean, especially Phytoplankton which is crucial to
the global carbon cycle. As
the ocean absorbs more carbon dioxide the balance in
the ocean life-forms that has
made it possible for this human friendly atmosphere of
the last 2 million years will
slowly grind to a halt. As
Mark Lynas states Acidifying the oceans is rather like
spraying weedkiller over all
the plant life on earth. The
consequences could well be
irreversible.
I will continue with a 2 degree world next week and
then move on to a 3, 4, 5 and
6 world.
What is your opinion?

The housing market across

regional Victoria ended 2014
on a high note, with the
December quarter median
house price up 5.5 per cent
on September. The median
price of $344,000 was up
from $326,000 in the September quarter.
This was a significant rebound for the housing market, which had only seen a
marginal increase of about
0.3 per cent - in the September quarter. Despite that
quieter September quarter,
over the year ending December 31 the regional median
house price was up 5.8 per
cent. The year-on-year increase for units and apartments was three per cent,
with this market showing
a healthy four per cent increase over the December
quarter to a median unit
price of $257,000.
Looking back to the previous year and to 2012 illustrates the increasing strength
of this regional market: in
the December quarter 2013
the median house price was
$317,500 a new record then
and the year before that it
was just $302,500.
Of course there are substantial variations across the
state as local factors such as
seasonal demand, employment levels and transport
links to Melbourne and key
regional centres impact on
property prices. For example, in the Alpine region
prices rose by close to 12 per
cent in the year to the end of
December, while in Greater

Ballarat, the increase was 4.1

per cent, in Greater Bendigo
4.5 per cent and in Greater
Geelong there was a slight
fall, of just under one per
cent.
In East Gippsland the increase was 4.9 per cent over
the 12 months, in Greater
Shepparton it was three
per cent. And in the ColacOtway region, driven by
higher prices in Colac, the
annual increase was above
20 per cent.
But it should be noted that
in many of the towns and
suburbs within these municipalities there were fewer
than 50 sales over the year,
so while the median house
price is still an important
indicator, it is based on less
data than in some Melbourne suburbs with significantly more sales.
Nonetheless, the overall
median house price increase
was good news for sellers
and homeowners.
Over
the year agents reported
increased buyer competition for properties in centres
within commuting distance
of Melbourne or key regional
towns as rising Melbourne
prices led families to seek
more affordable properties.
Improved rail links have
also helped lift this demand.
Agents are also reporting
more investor interest in
regional centres, including
interstate and overseas investors. Much of the local
investor interest is being
driven by self managed superannuation fund investment. This investor interest has also helped boost
construction of low maintenance apartments and
townhouses.
The decision by the Reserve
Bank last week to cut the
cash rate to 2.25 per cent
the lowest level since the
1950s should further assist
the market. More importantly, it will provide a significant boost to those who
have been looking to buy a
new home across the state in
coming months.

Stumping cancer
By Jessica Howard
The Blackwood Cricket
Club will join hundreds of
cricket clubs around Australia this weekend in supporting the McGrath Foundation Pink Stumps Day.
To celebrate their inaugural event, the club will be
decked out in pink this Saturday for their home game
clash against Romsey.
The initiative aims to help
make a difference to the
lives of Australian families

experiencing breast cancer,

by helping the McGrath
Foundation raise funds to
place breast care nurses in
communities
throughout
the country.
Commencing at 1pm at the
Blackwood Recreation Reserve, the club invites families, friends and colleagues
to head down to watch some
cricket, enjoy some cold beverages and support a fantastic cause.
Club member, Jodie Bantz
said that if they receive a

good enough response, the

club hoped to hold the event
each year.
When youre in a small
community I think it is important that your sports club
does things like this for a
good cause, she said.
It brings the community
together on the day to catch
up and socialise, but its also
a good way to contribute.
Refreshments, raffles and
fundraising activities will be
available also.

Avenue Lawn Bowls

Premier Division hosted

fourth placed Lara with the
players keen to maintain the
excellent form shown over
the past few matches. Prior
to the game Lara were obviously the favourites, given
the ladder positions of both
teams, however it was Avenue that set the pace. With
solid performances from
Andrew Myers rink (8 shots
up), Sam Shannahans rink
(9 shots up) and Glenn Sargents rink (10 shots up), Avenue were able to overcome
the loss on Martin Sheas
rink to run out convincing
winners by 17 shots, and
more importantly gain 16
valuable points.
Final score - Avenue 95 def
Lara 78
Division 3 travelled to
Learmonth and faced a danger game against the sixth
placed team. Avenue, led by
a strong performance from
Charlie Grants rink, which
won 34-9 and Vic Foxfords
rink (28-15), were able to run
out 34 shot winners on the
day. Frank Pomeroys rink
also started well but after
the tea break went shot for
shot with their opponents
only to go down by three
after losing five shots on the
last two ends. Bill Hawkens
rink were seven shots down
in the early going, but fought
back well and got to a five
shot lead with four ends to
go, but surrendered the lead
on the final end to lose by
one.
Nonetheless, the win ensures the side of a double

(5 shots up and 10 shots up

respectively) put Avenue in
a strong position, however a
rare loss to Ron Millingtons
rink (8 shots down) and Stan
Cummings (23 shots down)
meant that Avenue did not
come away with a win.
The side is still on top of the
ladder as it was only their
third loss for the season and
will get the double chance in
the finals.
Final score - Avenue 87 lt
Daylesford 103
MIDWEEK
Division 1 drew with Sebastopol on their grass, with
Molly Whitings rink recording a good 14 shot win, but
the other two rinks struggled. The side is currently
sixth on the ladder, but less
than a game outside the top
four.
Division 2 hosted Sebastopol, but couldnt replicate
the good form theyve shown
over the past six rounds, to
go down by 10 shots. Lyn
Robinsons rink was the
only victorious rink for the
day (7 shots up), whilst Barbara Giles rink fought out a
draw, and Judy Autys rink
went down by 14.
Over 60s - This week sees
the final of the competition
with Avenue playing Melton
in the final at Bacchus Marsh
BC on Wednesday. All members of the Club wish the
team of Laurie Burke, Bob
Delaney, Gerry Coughlan
and Sue Butterworth good
fortune in the game.
