ENTREPRENEURSHIP DEVELOPMENT CELL, IIT

ROORKEE (EDC-IITR)
ABOUT:

Started in 2006 under STEP, EDC IIT-Roorkee was formed with a vision of instilling a
spirit of entrepreneurship amongst the students of our campus, and providing
guidance to them in setting up their own ventures. EDC organizes several events, in
which students can learn, participate and develop their business acumen. The cells
efforts in cultivating entrepreneurial temper have resulted in the initiation of myriad
ventures by our students. Today, IITR boasts of a number of successful start-ups and
EDC has been a vital influence in all of them.

FLAGSHIP EVENTS:

Broadly speaking, EDC aims to create a buzz about entrepreneurship by

enlightening students about the endless opportunities within and beyond their
branch of engineering. We intend to achieve this by organizing relevant and welldirected events for the student population and providing mentoring and incubation
to hopeful candidates. Major flagship events of EDC-IITR are:

JUGAAD:
It is the largest intra IITR ideating and B-Plan competition. Jugaad receives
entries across all departments within IITR and has various technical as well as
non-technical business ideas. The judging panel is a mix from all walks of life.
EDC-IITR is associated with various VCs, Angel Investors and TIEDA. The
promising ideas that compete in Jugaad are provided with mentorship and
incubation.

SAMADHAN:
EDC promotes Social Entrepreneurship through Samadhan, which is a
consortium motivating individuals towards modern day social challenges.
Many social challenges like education, women-empowerment, rural
transformation, agricultural reforms and infrastructural development are
discussed and participants present business models to alleviate these issues.

E-SUMMIT:
This is a week-long inter-college entrepreneurship festival of IIT-Roorkee. It
comprises of Lectures by eminent speakers, Panel Discussions, Guest
Lectures, Quizzes, Entrepreneurship and Finance related workshops and
games and more. The reach of E-Summit increases exponentially with each
passing year. E-Summit, 2011 attracted around 8000 students from campus,
and last year it attracted more than 10,000 students from IIT-Roorkee and
outside.
START-UP INTERNSHIP PROGRAMME (SIP):
It is an initiative taken by the EDC IIT-R, where we try to bridge a link between
the students and entrepreneurs from the start-up ecosystem. Nowadays
students are taking keen interest in working in Start-ups as it gives them a
comprehensive view of business and they also get an opportunity to work

with founders and top management of the companies. SIF 2012 attracted
more than 500 applications for internship in about 30+ start-ups. Apart from
getting nice internship opportunities, students also got handsome amount of
stipends as well, varying from Rs 5000 to $ 1500 per month.

OTHERS:
Other regular events include Start-up Showcase, lighter events like Business
Baazigar, The E-Quiz, and several other online and offline competitions.

EVENTS LINE-UP FOR 2013:

In 2013, EDC aspires to become more active than it has ever been. We aim to
extend our reach to other IITs, organizing events in association with their respective
E-cells. Apart from organizing its flagship events (Jugaad, E-Summit, SIP, Samadhan)
at a much larger scale, the team is constantly planning to add more EDC events to
the IITR calendar. The craze and excitement of entrepreneurship among the
students is at an all time high and EDC wants to make the most of it. Two of the
major events planned for this year are:

TEDx-IITRoorkee:
We are starting off with our most ambitious yet and much awaited event
TEDx IITRoorkee, which is scheduled on 9 th February, 2013. TEDx-IITRoorkee
is an independently organized TED event, where a diverse group of speakers
and attendees meet up to share their insights, stories and perspectives.

Prerna Yatra:
We are also planning Prerna Yatra, a microcosm of Tata Jagriti Yatra. It will be
a 3-day visit to inspiring NGOs designed to provide students with insights of
Social Entrepreneurship. Prerna Yatra is conceptualized with the aim of
providing a platform to the participants (Yatris) for networking and sharing of
ideas, sensitizing them to the underpowered sections of the society, and
inspiring them with stories of people who have been addressing the problems
of our society, and also motivating them to pursue their field of interest.

SUCCESS STORIES:
IIT-Roorkee has certainly had a lot to benefit from EDC since its inception in 2006.
Besides inspiring te students to choose their paths, EDC has and will continue to
provide platforms for discussion of ideas and mentor the student entrepreneurs of
our institute. And of course, we aim to serve, not just our campus population, but
anyone and everyone who is excited about entrepreneurship as much as we are.
