Read this passage about the great Hungarian composer, Bela Bartok, and answer the following questions:
Bela Bartok was born in Hungary in 1881, the son of a director of an agricultural school. He studied at the Conservatory in
Budapest and wrote Concerto, The Miraculous Mandarin and the Kossuth Overture which was performed in 1904 in England. He
also wrote the Concerto for Violin for Sir Yehudi Menuhin..
In 1905 he started to travel through Hungary, Slovakia and Romania to study folk music. He made 16,000 recordings of people
playing and singing and became very interested in traditional Hungarian instruments and melodies. He was also interested in all
kinds of folk music. He returned to Budapest in 1908 and worked as a piano teacher at the Hungarian Academy of Music until
1934.
In 1940 he went to live in the United States because he did not agree with Nazism. He worked in the US as a pianist. He died in
1945, a poor man, but he was a great composer and invented a new musical language. Among his greatest works are the six great
street quartets, the opera Bluebeards Castle (1911) as well as several ballets like The Wooden Prince (1914-1916). His music is
still performed and greatly appreciated today.
