Other Site Characteristics


Se trata del m enclave montaoso mas alto de los que salpican la comarca de Tierra de Barros, situado al sur de la
misma junto a la localidad de Hornachos. Esta situacin dominante lleva a que sus laderas viertan sus aguas en tres
ros distintos, el Matachel, Guadmez y Palomillas. Por el suroeste limita con mrgenes desarbolados del Embalse de
Los Molinos y por el norte con un terreno ms abrupto, con otras sierras de menor altitud como son Sierra de
Miradera, Sierra del Rincn y Sierra de la Pedriza.

4.2 Quality and importance


Un total de 12 elementos referidos en la Directiva se encuentran representados en dicho enclave. De elllos, 8 son
hbitats y 4 se corresponden con taxones del Anexo II. Buena representacin de las formaciones de Enebros y de
Fruticedas, as como de vegetacin casmoftica silcola. Presencia de Emys orbicularis y Mauremys leprosa, as como
Lutra lutra y la mariposa Euphydryas aurinia.
En relacin con las poblaciones de aves, la presencia de algunos
pastizales en los arededores del espacio y cultivos marginales de secano entre los cuales emerge el macizo
montaoso que compone la ZEPA -LIC- ZIR donde afloran grandes roquedos cuarcticos con importantes
alcornocales, encinares y manchas de monte mediterrneo en sus laderas, permiten la presencia de importantes
poblaciones de aves rupcolas (guila perdicera, alimoche, buitre leonado, halcn peregrino, ciguea negra, guila
real, bho real).
