In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real

media products?

As a group, we all started researching and watching Coming Of Age films and it helped me realise typical
form and conventions to the genre. The opening sequence I analysed was 'Submarine'. However I have
watched several Coming-Of-Ages and created an overview of the conventions to be:

Alot of establishing shots of the location

Titling of the production company and distribution, briefly at the start

Maximum of two characters in the opening however mainly focus on the protagonist

Usually the protagonist is male

Non diegetic music/soundtrack for the equallibrium

The cinematography is beautiful

In Sliver Linings; alot was happening which was shown from the quick camera movement and
various fast cuts - reflects on protagonist's mindset, changes alot.

Quite depressing somehow and real

From the opening sequence I analysed - the protagonist breaks the fourth wall

In the edit (Sumana and Hana) we followed these conventions. For instance we used many long shots to
show location and the cinematography (e.g. traffic light) was good. It helped to create a sense of realism
and gave an insight to the audience of the protagonists daily routine and environment. Our protagonist is
male. The opening sequence broke the fourth wall at the end to create a dramatic effect. And we only
featured titles at the beginning. In addition we used a soundtrack.

Song - This is part of the Music Industry-Media. It was a challenge to get in contact for the rights of the
track however the result was for us to record it ourselves. From my research; Coming-Of-Age films use a
music track at the beginning (but in my edit I am now trying to make sure the edit isn't dependant on the
music track by adding more foley sounds) In addition fans of the artist may watch film in support of the

artist, this broadens the target audience and usually the 'Alternative/Indie' fans enjoy watching
Independent films especially if it's Coming-Of-Age. - I got this assumption from one of my
feedback interviews.

Also we researched different Coming Of Age film posters.

Film Poster - Like with all films, film posters are important to advertise the film. The Coming-Of-Age
poster I analysed (Submarine) had many genuine interpretations which reflected on the protagonist's life.
So what we decided to do, was to make the poster mysterious and dark to reflect Lucas's life.

Teaser Trailer - Gives audience an insight on the film. Can be shared on social media to generate
excitement. And advertise. "Water cooler moment" as trailer may be shared and talked about between
friends.

We challenged conventions of a typical Coming Of Age by having alot of non diegetic dialogue. In
Submarine there was a voice over to make the audience feel as if theyre in the protagonist's mind - create
relation and bond, but the protagonist was not revealed until the end; so the use of this voice over was to
create mystery and enigma codes of who is thinking so strangely and why. Voice over was not featured in
the same way for our opening sequence; during the therapy scenes some flashback shots occurred during
the dialogue so voice over was used.
