DIOCESAN INSPECTION
As you are aware, we had a visit from two Diocesan
Inspectors carrying out the Section 48 Inspection of St.
Bedes on the 29th 30th January. We are delighted to
inform you that the judgement of the Inspectors was
that St Bedes is an Outstanding Catholic school.
They said our pupils were wonderful youngsters who
were determined to achieve and be the best they can
be. Thank you parents for completing the
Questionnaire. We received 341 returns, 33%! The
Inspectors were astonished as 10% is sometimes the
response they receive. Once the report is with us I
shall let you have a copy.

POETRY LIVE!
On Friday 30th January, 15 Year 11 pupils
attended the annual Poetry Live event in
Bath. With almost one thousand pupils from
across the West Country packed into The Forum,
the atmosphere was fantastic and expectation
high. Some of the biggest names connected with
modern poetry were in attendance, all of whom
have been staples in the GCSE Anthology for
several years.
A wonderful selection of contemporary poets
were present with Carol Ann Duffy, Gillian Clarke
and Grace Nichols offering insights into some of
their best known poems. We were lucky enough
to get tips from a chief examiner from AQA too.
The undoubted highlights of the day were Simon
Armitage, Imtiaz Dharkar and John Agard. All
three spoke with passion and insight with
Armitages down to earth stories, in particular,
bringing a total hush to the hall. John Agard is
always a favourite and he made sure that
everybody in the venue left with a smile on their
face and, hopefully, an interest in live poetry.

ZUMOS
We are very pleased to
have launched Zumos to all
pupils in Years 7 to 11 over
the last two weeks. Zumos
is a project which we have
successfully received Lottery Funding to run and
focuses on pupil well-being and positivity. Pupils
play quizzes, games and have access
to information on a range of topics around the
four main areas of body, feelings, relationships
and life. Expert written, peer reviewed,
motivational support and vocal recordings
can anonymously be accessed with further
support information in the form of web links,
helplines, suggested reading, books and videos.
By the end of this week we hope to have all 900
pupils logged on. Zumos is available to use on
computers, tablets and mobile phones. Please
ask your child for a demonstration of all that
Zumos has to offer.

HOUSES OF PARLIAMENT VISIT

On Wednesday 4th February, 30 Sixth Form students
visited the Houses of Parliament. Students were taken
on a guided tour around the Palace of Westminster
including the House of Lords. Here we saw the highly
decorated throne from which the Queen delivers her
speech announcing the State opening of Parliament
for the forthcoming year. We were in Westminster
Hall, the oldest part of the palace which is over 1000
years old. Prime Ministers Question Time was
happening in the House of Commons so students
watched the procession of the Speaker of the House
through the lobby into the Commons. They also
learned about the suffragette movement and saw the
scarf that Emily Wilding Davison wore on the day she
was fatally injured by the Kings horse at Epsom Derby
in 1913 is currently on display in the Houses of
Parliament.
Students then took part in a workshop on law
making and had a lively debate about whether
legislation regarding university tuition fees
should be scrapped before meeting our local MP,
Charlotte Leslie. They visited the Supreme Court
of Justice, which is the highest appeal court in
the UK, and saw part of an appeal against a
murder conviction. In the afternoon students
saw some of the sights of London including
Downing Street and Buckingham Palace before
visiting Covent Garden market. Students
commented that the trip was fun, interesting and
helped them to consider careers in politics and
law. If you want to find out more about how
laws are made, voting or careers in Parliament,

CALLING ALL YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS

Year 9 pupils are being encouraged to participate in
the Tenner competition which will be running again
this year. The nationwide competition aims to find
the next generation of budding entrepreneurs,
providing pupils with 10 to think of a new business
idea and make it happen. Pupils will then have 4
weeks to make as much profit as they can, whilst
trying to make a difference to give back to society.
The competition will be useful to those pupils who are
considering GCSE Business Studies.
Parents who wish to know more can visit
