GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Essay Competition aims to enhance general knowledge of the participants and improve
ability to explain their ideas about sustainable minerals and materials processing.
Contestants are challenged to transform scientific information combined with their own
ideas into a concise, clear, objective and educative essay for the readers

BACKGROUND
Extractive activites are an important part in empowering the economy of many
Southeast Asian countries. China, India, and Indonesia are of the continent's most
productive mining economies. These countries extract minerals from abundant and
various deposits all over the region. As there are still many potential uses for
untouched and/or undeveloped minerals and materials in Southeast Asia, this is
certainly a great opportunity to increase the mineral industry sector which will
further support the sustainability of countries in the region. Students are expected to
analyze and explore an opportunity for improvement of industrial minerals and
materials sector by working it on an essay which will be submitted in this
competition.
Different subjects will discuss those potentials in different ways. Participants are free
to analyze thoroughly based on their own background. Essay competition is
intended to allow students in voicing their aspirations, ideas, as well as their
creativity through a writing. Analytical aspects such as lengthy analysis, detailed
mathematical calculations are not necessarily needed in this competition, as long as
the idea and/or concept is to-the-point and primarily exhibits critical thinking,
understanding and knowledge on the topics raised, as well as proficiency in
structural organization. Through this essay, we hope many briliant ideas may come
up to increase our awareness in minerals and materials sector, furthermore to obtain
solutions for industrial mineral sector in Southeast Asia region.

ESSAY THEME
Analysis of current deposits, condition and potential for the development
of industrial minerals and materials in Southeast Asia region

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
1.

Participants must compete individually in this competition category

2.

Participants who tookpart in IChEC 2015 Plant Design, Problem Solving, or

Poster Competition are eligible to join this competition

3.

Participants can only submit 1 (one) entry. Multiple entries will not be judged

4.

Participants must be an undergraduate or vocational program (diploma) student

from any disciplines or majors by 31 January 2015

5.

Students under academic sanction are not allowed to participate in this

competition

6.

Invited participants are students from Southeast Asian countries and beyond

7.

Each participant must register according to the rules in the Registration section
and complete all the required administration documents

8.

All entries and administration documents will become the property of Indonesia
Chemical Engineering Challenge 2015 Organizing Committee and will not be
returned

9.

Essay must have never been commercialized or won any other competitions
before. Violation of this rule leads to immediate disqualification

10.

Essay proposed by the participants must be related to the given theme

ESSAY WRITING COMPETITION GUIDEBOOK

REGISTRATION
1.

Participants must register online at http://www.ichec-itb.com. The registration will be

officially opened on 24 November 2014 and will be closed on 31 January 2015

2.

Participants will receive notification email containing official registration number within 2 x
24 hours after online registration

3.

Free registration fee

4.

Participants must attach all the registration documents and email them to
ichec.2015@gmail.com with IChEC2015_ES_XXXXX as the subject. XXXXX is the
registration number from the notification email.

The required registration documents are:

Essay

Scanned letter from Major Department or University(*.jpg/*.jpeg) stating that participant

is currently enrolled as a student in the stated college or university and not under academic
sanction

Newest photo (formal, colored, not black and white or grayscale; size 4 cm x 6 cm) of
participant (*.jpg/*.jpeg)

Scanned valid student ID card of participant (*.jpg/*.jpeg)

All of the required registration documents must be zipped into single file named
IChEC2015_ES_XXXXX.zip (only *.zip file type is approved, maximum file size of 8 MB)
These documents must be submitted before 11.59 p.m. (GMT +7) or 23.59 WIB, 31 January 2015. Late
submissions after the deadline will be penalized. (Refer to appendix section for penalty incurrences)
Each participant will receive a notification email confirming their submission within 2 x 24 hours after
submitting the documents

Content Specifications

Essay title must be original and descriptive, also written in UPPERCASE, centered
and bold style

Do not include the identity of participant, include only the registration number

The essay must be maximum 6 (six) pages, including list of references

The essay must be original and unpublished work. If the references or citations are
needed, it should be included and clearly identified in the essay

Page numbers should be centered and placed at the footer of each page

Registration number must be placed at the header of each page

The essay may only contain maximum 5 (five) pieces of illustration (figure, tables,
etc.) to support the idea or argument

The submitted essay does not have to be in rigid format, but must at least contain the
following points:

Background of the essay

Main concept(s), idea(s), and/or solution(s)

Conclusion of the essay
